Thanks for the reply, Ddeere2. The newer speeds took effect yesterday because I changed my packages last Wednesday. I tried the Stanford test and, from what I can decipher, I got 2.19M/427K. and on the second test, I got 2.64M/468K. I didn't see anything regarding the ping. So I have to conclude that most things are normal on my side The Speedtest site is still spitting out some insane results though. I think I'll check out the Embarq forums...

After reading some ultra geeky sites, I realize that some of my speeds aren't all that out of line. A kb is not the same as a KB... 1KB is 8kb and 1MB is 1024KB; therefore, some of my speeds have been around 3MB. I guess everything is well

I decided to try tethering my BB Pearl for a few weeks since mom doesnt have a computer or Internet and she wants me to help her with some finances. I got 16000+K on my first test, but i see that's not normal LOL
Quint, I saw your post earlier about your the MB and Mb confusion, but I'm talking about ping or latency. It seems its gone down some from before. Also, with DSL, you normally won't see your full speed because of the over head. My ping is high, considering that my servers are not in the same town I am. But I can't complain, its been stable, a lot more than when I had cable.
Here are two speed tests (via WiFi on my laptop) after having Embarq "move" the equipment (due to the old port being bogged down) my line used to a location much closer to me (I am on the 10 Mbps down/896 Kbps up package): Test 1: Test 2:
Here is my speed taken from the same site (10 Meg Package): Running tests. Please wait... -- Starting download test... Done! -- Starting upload test... Done! Testing complete! Your results are: - Download speed: 9.869 Mbits/sec ( 186 times faster than a 56k modem ) - Upload speed: 868.000 KBits/sec ( 26 times faster than a 56k modem )
First, this is my speed with my desktop connected directly to the cable modem: then this is my speed with a wireless router between the two using ethernet cables: why does it drop off so much? It is still a wired connection. It is a Netgear WGR614 and it says 54 Mbps wireless router. The wireless part is for a laptop, the desktop is still hard wired. Anybody know how I can get the speed to pass through the wireless router?
Joe, I'd look at things like your MTU (max packet size), and size and number of receive buffers, inside the router (size and number of router buffers likely not setable). Also, whether you have double Network Address Translation as well (is DHCP turned on in the cable modem and in the router?). Also check at Netgear support site, and see if they are offering a firmware update for the WGR614. COtech
here is mine and it is good for today LOL, 6 more days and I will be back home getting the speeds that I am seeing above. JFB, like was said, check the router firmware, I used to have the same issues with both Netgear and Linksys. ALso try the test with security off. Netgear's support gave me a laughable response and said that I need to disable all security settings, that did it and I returned the router. For me I have been lucky with the same results with both Belkin and D-Link, the last Linksys I got did very well with minimal loss. The current router (back hoime in VA) is the Vezon Fios wirless router and that one always gave me the speeds that are set on the account.
