I'm currently researching my first cellphone/ provider (I know I'm living in the dark ages).

I live in NYC but travel by MetroNorth to Connecticut (Madison, Deep River, Ct. River Valley Area) often. I'm looking for a good phone (no more than $150-200, small, flip) and MORE IMPORTANTLY a good provider that can cover both areas. Any suggestions?

Unfortunely if you live in NYC you will be hooked up with a Cingular GSM phone which gives you more limited coverage then the above Anonymous poster who is on Cingular TDMA. I second Verizon Wireless.

If you do make sure you can leave the plan, and return the phone, after a trial period. Their coverage in NYC - at least in my opinion - is spotty to say the least. Lots of dropped calls and weak signals. In fact, in July AT&T Wireless management even publically admitted they were having "difficulties" in NYC. And it has nothing to do with 9/11. Verizon also has a 15 day "no risk" trial period. Why not try both of them out?
