Hi there, The person I am calling is in Seattle WA and I am in Toronto. I only ever call the one number in Seattle and the person in Seattle only ever calls my number. I am looking for the best plan for this situation. Is it getting a family plan in the states on a north american plan. I thought I heard somewhere that you can get a deal on the one number you call the most or something like that. any ideas on the best route?? Thanks

The only deals like that I know of are for landline service, not cellular.
Probably your best bet would be a VOIP solution like Vonage.

Jay Thanks, but I need cellular for sure. What can you tell me about this plan?

129.99 for 2100 minutes under family plan 2 lines
    http://mobileoptions.vzw.com/international/rates/na_calling_plans.html

we would be able to get two phones under the family plan. the minutes should be good for me... my only question is... if you get the 2 phones under the family plan, can you do what I want to do which is use one phone from the US to call Canada (thats what the plan says) but can I take the 2nd phone and make calls from Canada to the US and still have it covered?

    This is what is says.,..
Make and receive calls from your Home Airtime Rate and Coverage Area (including Puerto Rico) to parts of Mexico and Canada without incurring roaming or long distance charges.

IS that how it reads to you???

That all sounds good, but if you "park" in Canada VZW may drop you. They will cover a tourist or business traveler who's in Canada for a week or 2, but if all the usage on that line is in Canada they won't like it. Even though they're not charging you for it, they will have to pay roaming fees to the Canadian carrier for the usage of their network. I would say that after 3 or 4 months VZW will drop you, as they would be loosing money on your service.

T-Mobile just came out with their "5" program where up to 5 different numbers can be called an unlimited number of times. I'm not sure that would work between Seattle and Toronto since it involves long distance to Canada. Your best bet would be to get a plan and use a service such as onesuite www.onesuite.com that charges only 2 cents/minute to call Canada. I'm not sure what options you have for Canada, but I've use Tricell long distance where you buy a block of minutes in advance.
