I have been checking out our latest shipment we received of the 5300 and they have the 35 software in them with the volume fix and IMO the volume is more than adequate now. It is not as loud as some of the higher volume phones like the a500 but I think that it will be loud enough to be considered an all around great phone. The sweetspot could be bigger of course but with the improved volume it is not nearly as much of an issue. Using the upgraded 5300 I was totally comfortable with the volume and I have been a harsh critic of the pre-upgraded volume level.

For now you can not get the software upgrade in the stores as it is frying phones when done on the retail end. Most if not all sanyo 5300's that are shipping now should already have the upgrade on them so the few that are out there without it will have to wait a short time till the upgrade process is fixed- that shouldnt be long.

    everyone enjoy the phone now!

Thank you for this great piece of information! As I noted on another post, I ordered a 5300 and will be delivered to me ...hopefully before Christmas... [IMG] I was really skeptical about ordering this phone; I loved it when I held the demo at the Sprint store, but after reading how low the volume was on the earpiece, it was a bit of a disappointment - but after reading your post, I am now looking forward to owning this phone. By the way, just curious - do you know if the volume issue will be okay on the new shipments from Amazon.com? As that is where I ordered mine from.

I am not sure if this helps you, but I just got my phone and the version still the old one. I did a special order, so it should be latest model..
    Hope this helps..

I just bought my phone yesterday and it was the version 35 model. The volume seems pretty good. The only problem I am getting is network timeouts all the time in vision. Hopefully they will fix that soon.

Got the 35 fix....volume is still low (like my 5150).

No way you could hear someone in a bar.....

I really wish they would fix these phones!

My Vision plan is timing out less now though....I was actually able to send pictures via email tonight.....

mine is pretty loud with the upgrade. Since I got the phone I have taken like 40 pictures and had only a few timeouts when uploading......just clicked retry and it goes through. I have also downloaded about 15 ringers and 13 screensavers with no problems, checked my pcsmail (which is fixed now they are migrating users over to the new servers) and been exploring the wap web to no end on one huge screen.

So can the 35 upgrade be done atretail stores or not??The moderator says no but some other posts say they have got it done. They do have some real airheads at Sprint.I called last night and after going through "Dear Claire",who should be sent to Iraq to torture the Iraquies,I got a tech person..she was totally confused about any upgrades and told me her records show the most recent upgrade to the 5300 was 32!!!Neddless to say I got nowhere with her..I called back again and spoke to another Einstein who kept telling me it was my PRL and new nothing about software upgrades,,,,,Sprint indeed rushed the PCS Vision out and were obviously not ready either on the hardware end nor training end...Its so sad the bonuses are predicated on time frames and products are released when they are truly not ready and cause customers such horrific headaches.

I just got the 35 upgrade today and man it really made a difference on my phone. It is so loud now that I have to turn it way down or else hold the phone away from my ear. I wonder why some phones the upgrade seems to make no difference. Very odd since it is the same upgrade.

I got my phone upgraded today and there is a very noticeable difference. I have it on Medium Low now. Anything higher in a quiet environment hurts my ear.

If I understand your question, I have gotten to know the tech at my Sprint store, so she was expecting me. I called ahead of time to make sure they had the 1.035 software upgrade AND that they had another 5300 in the store just in case they fried mine while upgrading it.

What you want to ask them is if they have the software upgrade of 1.035 for the Sanyo 5300. It is my understanding all of the corporate stores should have this upgrade, and the franchises in another week or two. At my store it took them a day before they realized they had the upgrade.

I got a couple of questions for ya. Since you are one of the few people that has heard both.... in your opinion, is the uprade to the .035 just as loud as the models that come pre-loaded with the upgrade. I'm curious cause it thats not the case, then that means Sanyo did some hardware changes as well before the "new" batches were sent. Hopefully, the 2 levels are the same and it is only a software change.
Also, if the tech does not install the .034 update first(I have .032) and goes ahead and gets the .035 added, will that include the .034 update or do they have to be done seperatley? Thanx.

Alright guys.. first of all thanks for the information.

This morning I went to the sprint store at 11:30AM. went in to ask them for an update to 1.035SP. First they said it would take an hour and then an hour and a half.. waited impatiently to check it out and then the tech comes out to tell me that it did not go through the first time so he will try it again.. give it another 40 minutes... after waiting I came back around 2PM and the tech tells me that the update went through ok.. EXCEPT for a small glitch and for all you guys who recently got an upgrade from 1.034SP, please check to see if you do see this glitch.... The calculator graphic is missing.. it does NOT have a graphic but instead plain text. I told the tech this won't do so he brings out a brand new 5300 with the software already updated from the factory.. the volume issue has been fixed.. like everyone else says so...
    It is LOUD!!!!

can you guys check if you have calculator graphic issues with your upgrades ?

Due, my calculator is messed up too. I wouldn't have even known 'cause I hardly use it. Mine just shows a zer and a decimal point, but if you hit your up, down, left, and right buttons the +, -, x, and division (don't know how to type the symbol), show up where it should be, but no = sign, and they are just black and white. I'm not worried about it though because I hardly use a calculator anyway. Alo, check and see if it erased any of your preset screensavers. Mine are gone. My favorite one with the rainbow, lightning, etc. is gone. What is that all about? I guess I'll have to pay for another cool one 'cause I really don''t want to get a new phone for the fact that I have too many contacts, ringers and pictures to have to put back in the phone. Sheesh!! [IMG]

Hi, I just got my 5300 also with a 1.034 version. If I have the volume on high, the earpiece is adequate enough. However, I just don't understand it..? I wish they would've just shipped all these 5300's out with the 1.035 version update; I mean, for that price, I don't think us customers should have to go through all this stress.. like finding a Sprint tech who will actually update it correctly without frying the phone or messing up the calculator part. It's kinda ridiculous, don't you all agree?

I am thinking of getting mine upgraded to 1.035 but I just don't want to go through the stress. mmm.. now I'm not sure what to do. ? [IMG]

You have to go to a Sprint store, but you may want to call them first to make sure they have the update and are prepared to install it into your phone. Good luck.

    Amylyn1970 and chococatt,

I dont know about the preset screensaver. didn't know about that one since the tech did not mention that.. so now I think there are other issues than just the calculator.. What I did however, was that told them I'm not happy about paying $400 for something you did an upgrade on and things are now missing.. they were very nice about it and simply exchanged it with a new one.. I would recommend you do that... $400 is not a joke.. know what I mean ??? [IMG]

Chococatt, I agree with you.. if the phone doesn't work up to what you wanted it to like some missing stuff on it.. you should just ask them to give you a new one and technically they should and they will...

The other thing I wanted you to know that the tech backed up all my contacts and my personal preferences before he tried the upgrade(it was very nice of him, and they are supposed to do that anyway).. so when the old phone didn't work with the calculator he simply transferred all of my contacts and settings to the new one.... which worked out great! just make sure you do tell him/her to back all your contacts and settings up.

Let me tell you though, the volume is now beautiful I no longer have to jam the phone in my ear to listen...feels like a whole new phone.
    Hope this helps!!

My phone's calculator is fine. My question to you is, how did your phone come with such cool preset screensavers?! Mine are dumb! They are 'Stars & Stripes', 'Evening Glow', and 'Balloons'. Ugh!!!

What version was your phone when you bought it?! I'm kind of irritated.

hk, go to settings, display, and then animation. Look under standby and it will say preset. If you set it on preset it should be the cool one I mentioned. I no longer have it, but I guess I can live with it for now [IMG]

    amylyn,

I recently went to the sprint store to do the 1.035 upgrade too. :-/ let me tell you my story... cuz I think you got suckered.

first of all, I know a lot (well at least I think I do) about flash firmware upgrade, so I watched over my phone like a hawk during the upgrade. The Sprint ppl kept telling me to back off from the computer. Finally, the upgrade was done, but I noticed a failure msg. The Sprint Tech(at Rockville, MD store named Benny) tried to play it off as my phone being ok, but I knew better. The phone still turned on but the graphics and sounds were missing. He went back and got a used phone and tried to replace that one for mine. Usually this is the optimal solution to deal with customer in this situation, but I wouldn't settle for it since I went to the store for an upgrade. I told the Sprint people that I simply refuse to take a used phone and I demanded that the tech tried the software upgrade again. During the second upgrade, I was discussing what to do about the matter for at least 45 minutes. The tech kept telling me to take the phone and I kept telling him, let me wait for my phone (I only had it for 2 days but was very attached to THAT one already). Finally it was done and everything was perfect. the volume upgrade was there.

here's my observation from the whole experience. The second try went through because another sprint rep told the tech to take turbo mode off (on the machine). I suggest that amylyn or anyone in her situation take it back to the store and insist on redoing the upgrade... Trust me you cool screensaver will be back on there if it was successful...

I really dont like the way sprint representative are trained to deal with customer service issues. It seem like all they want to do the optimal low cost solution (ie. replace phone with low gross cost phone). but I kinda understand, because I work at radioshack and its just a pain in the neck fixing every individual phones.

BTW on the final note, the leather case is available from Sprint for the Sanyo 5300. I purchased it but I didn't like hard leather so I will be returning it tomorrow :-/ RadioShack's version will be out in about 2 weeks. The stock number is 170-827. I could be wront about the number, ill double check my next shift. It will be made of soft lambskin leather, that way you can slide it off your phone and show it off if you know what I mean [IMG] well thanks for reading, I feel your pain everybody.

    they friend my phone [IMG]
not worried about phone book, got everything backed up in outlook
not worried about screensavers and animations, they're in my locker at matrixm.com
just po'd the techs can't do their upgrades right, and the replacement phone they gave me still has old version!

Oh, and ping pong... that's exactly how these customer service people are trained. Always, always, always, always, always go for the bottom dollar cheapest solution, no matter what. This makes the company more $$ and allows anyone in any position of power to buy bigger suv's and faster sports cars.

Thanks for the info pingpong. I live in La Plata, MD, about 45 minutes from you. I should probably travel to the Rockville store since I know they fixed your phone. I'm afraid mine will screw it up. My Sprint store doesn't even have the cases yet, so I will probably check w/Radio Shack since it does sound like they will have the best cases. I am using a generic pouch that I got at Sprint, which is made out of some type of rubber. Kind of like a wet suit turned inside out. It's nice, but like any other pouch you have to take it out to see whos calling. That's a pain. It's fits nice and snug on the phone which I like, but it still gets on my nerves.

    Amylyn,

I think doing it Wenjamin's way is better. Call a sprint store ahead to see if they got a brand new Sanyo 5300. because, I know for sure that at this point the tech will not do the upgrade for you. (The tech at the rockville store is named Benny Job) I kinda traumatized him when I went to get my phone upgraded. (See my story above). Getting it replaced with a brand new 1.035 software is the way to go.

Why did that happen to everyone's phones? I mean the missing animations. I got the upgrade last week and nothing is missing in mine. Calculator is fine, etc... Any ideas?

Y'know if you guys want some cool screensavers check out www.matrixm.com. No I don't work for them. [IMG] Pictures are .10 and they have a TON, plus you can upload your own for the same cost. They never expire like sprint's. Ringers are a little more, usually from $1-$1.30, but they have a free section so you can test, play around and learn how to do it before you start paying for them. The ringers are actually worth having though, like one I have of Homer Simpson singing "my bologna has a first name, it's H-O-M-E-R..."

just thought I'd share in case no one's seen this site.

Just wanted everyone to know my story - I had my 1.034 upgraded yesterday. It took an hour or so. After having read some posts about missing preset screensaver and messed up calculator, I immediately checked my phone settings after the upgrade. Well, guess what? I, too, was a victim of corrupt software. It was upgraded to 1.035 alright, but my calculator was not pink anymore and it just had the zero# on it, plus my pre-set animations were gone. Ugh! I was debating all night long last night whether I should tell the tech or not and try to have him exchange my phone. I even thought about keeping the phone and not worrying about it.

Today I changed my mind. Told myself I wasn't going to spend mega bucks on a phone and not have it in perfectly original condition. So I decided to call the tech who did the upgrade. He suggested doing another upgrade. He refused to give me a new phone. (j*rk) Told him that it's not up to my standard to have a defect on a newly upgraded phone. He then admitted that while doing the upgrade, he saw an error message almost at the end of the process. Duh! And he went ahead and finished the upgrade anyway -- really sly! I told him that no, I do not prefer another upgrade because I'm afraid of the consequences. He also told me that the turbo thingy was turned off, but it still made the error.

Anyway, since then he has changed his mind and he decided to give me a brand new factory installed 1.035 version phone. Happy me!! My advice to amylyn and others: Don't settle for less. Get your money's worth. We deserve the best for our money. If something happens to go wrong or bezerk with your upgrade, demand for a new phone. (in a tactful way, of course) [IMG] Don't settle for missing animations and calculator glitches. You won't be happy until you get a perfectly functional phone.

The volume is loud now with this version. I was at a noisy restaurant/bar this afternoon and my eardrums almost flew off. LOL

Good luck, everyone. Hope you get what you want at the end.
