Samsung Elec Supplies 3G Mobile Handsets To Sprint Nextel

SEOUL -(Dow Jones)- Samsung Electronics Co. said Monday it began supplying third-generation mobile handsets based on the EV-DO network to U.S-based Sprint Nextel.

    Financial terms weren't disclosed.

The announcement comes as Sprint Nextel will launch later Monday an over-the-air music-downloading service in the U.S. which will allow subscribers to download music directly onto their phones at a price of $2.50 a song.

In a press release, Samsung, the world's third-largest mobile handset maker by volume behind Nokia and Motorola said the new phone features a 2.0 megapixel camera, a rotating liquid crystal display screen, an MP3 player, a file viewer, as well as video-on-demand functions.

In addition to downloading music, the new phones will allow subscribers to view TV channels and carry out other multimedia functions available through Sprint's "Sprint Music Store," "Sprint TV" and "Sprint Power Vision," services, Samsung said.

Last December, Samsung began supplying the 3G phones to Verizon Wireless. By supplying the latest 3G service phones to Sprint, Samsung said it will be able to target the U.S. market on full-scale.

Samsung said it is planning to introduce newer versions of the EV-DO phone later this year.

Samsung didn't say how many handsets it will supply to Sprint.

Sprint officials couldn't immediately be reached for comment.
