    I just wanted to say James and Footose you guys are incredible. I've been keeping my eye on this thread since the 17th and eventually baseed some of the information on my decision to purchase the a460. I've visited footose web and downloaded his melodies with awe... Thanks again guys

    I would like to suggest that a new thread for images and games for the a460. I have not been able to find any images with similar qualities equal to performance of the phone. As a carrier with bell I do not know the way; however I would be pleased to help anyone with some sparking ideas.

    p.s. my phone can for some reason only hold 5 of footose ringtones is that normal or can I delete any of the melodies that came with the phone?

    Thanks

    No probs... Kudos to footose for implementing my ideas... I'm just such a lazy bastard!

    Two things:
    1. The phone can only hold a certain number of ringtones... And since I hadn't bothered testing yet I can't say how many but it looks like five. Thanks for helping with the research! [IMG]
    2. You can delete ringtones from your phone via: MENU, 7. Sounds, 2: Ringer Type, 6: Delete Melody

    This might be a little premature, since we don't yet know the file-types / mime-times of the idle screen images (ive heard elsewhere that most phones use any of JPEG, BMP, and/or PNG), but here are instructions for putting ringgers on your a460 from scratch.

    You'll Need:
    - Samsung a460
    - Midi file to use as ringtone (<8192bytes, and for the purpose, crop to 30-40secs)
    - Wireless internet services from your Service Provider
    - Simple HTML knowledge
    - Your IP address

    1) Download and install Xitami, a very stripped down, but very -free-, webserver. You can get it at http://www.xitami.com/download.htm

    2) Open xitami.cfg in the root install directory (ie, c:\xitami\xitami.cfg)

    3) Find the mime config, just over halfway through the document:
    # MIME configuration section
    . . . . . .
    au=audio/basic
    m3u=audio/mpegurl
    mid=audio/midi
    mp3=audio/mpeg
    mp3url=audio/mpegurl

    4) Change the line...

    mid=audio/midi
    to
    mid=download/ss-a460-mid

    5) Copy the ringtone(s) to the /webpages directory.

    6) Modify the default index.html in /webpages. Using -simple- html, create a webpage with links to your midis.

    7) (Re)start Xitami to update changes. (You must restart server when making configuration changes, but not for document/HTML changes).

    8) Navigate through your Service Provider's menu until you find the option to enter the URL you would like to visit. (Bell.ca's is 9-Bookmarks/GotoWeb->2-GotoWeb). Enter your computer's IP address.

    8') Or, press and hold MENU, select 3-Bookmarks, press menu again, and add your computer's IP address.

    If all goes well, you should be able to download your midi's by simply clicking the link, waiting for the download, and selecting "Save" at the menu. Remember, your cell phone is basically a 14.4k modem, so this can take a little time.

    Hope this helps, any questions can be posted here, or emailed to me at: drch at telus dot net.

    As per the request of some people I setup an HTML format to display current MIDI files on my site

    You can goto it by using the same address, just use your Windows Browser instead of your A460's [IMG]

    http://footose.ods.org

    This will also let you see when there has been updates to the site.

    jqs whether sprint is actually filtering/restricting MIME types and downloads is possible but I would like to see the MIME dump for Sprint's a460 for further testing. *cough**cough*

    If both dump looks the same then I would imagine Sprint is simply restricting external downloads. Its not to hard to believe anyways...they keep track of and restrict how many ringers and screens you can download.

    Take it easy!

    I'll upload the dump after I get from home from Christmas...
    As for the restrictions on how many ringers you can have, well that's a limitation of the phone itself, not Sprint. I believe that you can only have five ringers at one time...

    Apparently, the file types for the "Download Fun" w/ the samsung a460 are:

    Ringtone: audio/x-pmd 16 Voice cMIDI (8192)
    Screensaver: image/png 2 color Black/White (8192)

    Source: openwave developer program (http://upmkt.openwave.com/dev_phones/details.cfm?model_id=211)

    however, I tried both those types in my webserver cfg, to no avail. I also tried with a 2-color png file, using the forementioned mime-types (download/ss-a460-mgi, download/ss-a460-bss) with no luck either. Both replied with "Unsupported Data Type" *sigh*[IMG]

    I have an idea, though. If there are sites where users download images directly from them w/ their mobile, rather than using the SMS message link, one could setup a loggable bounce server. ie: run a server on port 80 on your comp, have your wireless connect to it, and have all traffic bounced to the site. the headers and such would make the image site think you were connecting via mobile, but it would be through your box. If a log was set up, we would be able to see the Content-type: header sent from the website for the images...

    Well first off, the Samsung A460 uses a midi file straight from your computer, and that mime type probably wouldn't work as it is Cmidi.

    Second, the "Screen Saver" for our phones is 4 colours, not 2 colours, so you probably have the wrong phone.

    First off, the information may be incorrect, but it is the right phone; im not a moron. Did you check the link? Obviously not, since it is definately the a460 (hence the big A460 at the top, and the image that look *GASP* identical to my phone).

    Yup, some of the information is incorrect... Since the PDU size is actually 8192k... I've been able to gleem that information directly from the phone via my website. The difference is prolly a software revision in the phone thast happened after that data was put up.

    This is why I want to finish my website that will log all characteristics of any phone that comes by. Then we'll get some good information.

    hey guys!
    I have been following your activities for a while now, and since I just got my A460 I am really interested in seeing what you can come up with.

    BTW thanks for all the instructions and direction they really really helped.

    I thought some of you might be interested in having some normal sounding ringtones! Since thanks to Samsung, A460 is really lacking that. so here is a site I have found with bunch of MIDIs:
    http://www.nickwinter.com/wireless/ringers.htm
    As you can see there are GCD files there, so I opened them all in notepad and here are the direct links to the MIDI files:

    http://www.nickwinter.com/wireless/ringers/ringer_a2.mid
    http://www.nickwinter.com/wireless/ringers/ringer_b.mid
    http://www.nickwinter.com/wireless/ringers/ringer_c.mid
    http://www.nickwinter.com/wireless/ringers/ringer_d2.mid
    http://www.nickwinter.com/wireless/ringers/ringer_e.mid
    http://www.nickwinter.com/wireless/ringers/ringer_f.mid
    http://www.nickwinter.com/wireless/ringers/ringer_g.mid
    http://www.nickwinter.com/wireless/ringers/ringer_h.mid
    http://www.nickwinter.com/wireless/ringers/ringer_i.mid
    http://www.nickwinter.com/wireless/ringers/ringer_j.mid
    http://www.nickwinter.com/wireless/ringers/ringer_k.mid
    http://www.nickwinter.com/wireless/ringers/ringer_l.mid
    http://www.nickwinter.com/wireless/ringers/ringer_m.mid

    some turn out to be really loud on my phone and sound horrible, so turn your volume down to hear them right. Specially "c". Make sure your ringer is all the down for that one. Right now I am using "e", it is very nice. [IMG]

    BTW I found that first link on here: http://www.a500hacking.com
    Maybe we could start our own! Since www.a460hacking.com is not taken. [IMG]

    cheers,

    LOL, I think perhaps we might need to find out a little more about the a460 before an entire site is devoted to it.
    I am really hoping that I or someone else can figure away for Sprint users to take advantage of this phone as well.

    P.S. I called Sprint Wireless Web Tech Support last night and asked them if we could or in the future could download ringers from other sites.... And of course, they have no idea.

Uou guys are amazing by the way...i wish you the best of luck and if you need a sprint user from the U.S. to try anything just let me know...

    So close...[IMG]

    Just spent the last couple hours trying to get my WAP-emulator to download an image from Bell's "Download Fun" server. Here's some things I found out.

    After you are in the Downloads area, Bell's server doesn't check to make sure your phone is capable of Downloads, so I fired up my wap-emulator and was able to attempt downloads without charge (hopefully). Unfortunately, it didn't work which i believe is due to some empty fields.

    See, the last page where you can select do download, is a link to a site (for my particular download, it was: http://204.101.237.139:8128/ci/down...ID=&PhoneType=5&CategoryID=503&ContentID=5214)
    Note that the fields "MIN" and "SubscriberID" are empty. I get an error message, which I believe is because of this.

    It wasn't because of my IP because I was actually connecting through the Bell WAP proxy server. The MIN (Mobile Identification Number) is simply your mobile's phone number. If I can find out what my subscriber number is, I may be able to fake a request with my browser, and find out the apparent content-type. The browser I'm using has several debug screens, one of which that shows the raw text sent to your system...

    Yet so far away... [IMG]

    (btw, other sites that offer images havent worked for me. If anyone finds a site (other than bell) that you connect to w/ your mobile, and download images directly, let me know. Even if you have to pay for it)

    JQS...
    btw, I believe the "specially formatted SMS message" uses what's called a WAP Push. I'll look into it some more tomorrow; too tired right now.

    Perhaps your ESN? But I imagine after you input your MIN and Sub ID you will be charged.
    BTW...did you design the WAP EMU or did you download it somewhere?

    Perfect, that's what I'm researching now (or rather, after the holidays...)... I think GCD files are the answer to everyone's dilemmas... The reality is that the carriers can't block the audio/midi MIME type without seriously affecting their product... (IE: downloadable games...) The GCD file, is used either via SMS or download direct from a server using a specific MIME type (that I haven't discovered yet...). (Actually, I think that particular MIME is blocked on Bell Mobility...[IMG])

    That seems odd. It fine on mine, perhaps the carriers have full control over the menu system, or we have different revisions of the software... (Bell Mobility only started offering the a460 at the begining of December unlike carriers in the US.)
    Check your phone's documentation. My box contained a nice little fold-out that listed all of the menu options...

    Yup, that's what it is... Now just to figure out how to do it... I've got every PDF off of the OpenWave site regarding the system. Hopefully we'll crack the code early in the new year.

    I was just wondering if the spring users can even download anything off of the net...i've tried a bunch of sites saying this and that, but what if we cant download and this is the problem in the first place, and not the file types, just another thing that came to mind

    As a sprint user I am able to download ringers and images...but ONLY through Sprint's Ringers and More site.
    Any other time it says something like "Invalid File Type". (MIMES)

    jqs, are you going to post the Sprint phone MIME dump AND the Bell MIME dump together?
    It would be interesting to see the comparison right off the bat, if any.

    I need some help, we have a Samsung A540 on the telus network in Canada, and I need to find and upload a normal sounding ring to it. Something that would work for biz. An old motorola or nokia ring would be fine. Can anyone tell me where to get one and how to get it on the phone??

    Thanks in advance.

    It's the developer site for the mobile browser, not the phone's specs. I thought it would shed some light on the situation. -I- am looking elsewhere for potential solutions, rather than living only in this forum.

    i thought this was interesting, i was reading the samsung website about the a460 and this was on it

    "Personalize Your Experience

    Download content wirelessly - including images and ringers - to create a customized phone tailored to the way you operate.

    Use downloadable MIDI ringers to create truly unique sounds. Up to 16 simultaneous tones means you'll always know if it's your phone ringing."

    so maybe sprint just blocked us from downloading anything off of the net...could it be that simple?

    That's exactly it... Aren't they evil? Actually, it's more like, aren't they greedy. Everyone wants to make money off of the service. My philosophy is as such:
    I pay for the phone...
    I pay for the service...
    I own a webserver...
    I should be able to move my content to my phone without inccuring another cost...

    hey everyone, just wanted to let you all know i will be setting up a subdomain on my server that i will have all the mime types all setup so that A460 users can download files and i also plan to setup an upload section so you can upload files and download them to your a460, and it will be on a actually server not hosted off my computer. So if anyone has content they would like me to add to the server please zip it up and send it to mike@redqube.net and i hope to have this all up and running soon thanks.

    I already emailed them, asking what the mime-type was for images. They gave me a round-about answer, and said that any ringtones and images would be made available only by my carrier.

    Heres something I found interesting:

    Now, is it possible that samsung/openwave accept more than one mime type for the ringtones and images? IE, ss-a460-mid is acceptable for ringtones, but what if x-mmc.ringtone;content-type=audio/midi;size=5424 works too? I don't have the current setup to test this out, but it would make sense for samsung/openwave to utilize a generic mime-type for this phone that was already compatible for other mobiles.

    Note: the proper mime-type might not be found in the mime dump. it is not uncommon for phones to withold some of the data they are capable of.
