News Well I'm sorry to announce that my website and cell phone research will be slightly delayed. At least until the new year... Last night I returned to my house to find a small surprise... It had been burgled. Needless to say I'm missing many an item and for something liek this to happen just before Christmas (let alone today being my birhtday) has pretty much caused me to be quite upset/depressed/etc... I will continue to work on the project as it is the pet project at the top of my list, unless I run into the guys(s) that took my stuff. I will be checking this forum, and answering personal email but don't expect too much from me for a little while.
Holy cow, James... Well, at least you're ok... I guess wishing you a Happy Birthday and Happy Holidays at this point would sound trite, so instead I'll just say, take care of yourself and don't worry about us. It sounds like you have much more important things to take care of. In the meantime, we'll keep playing around with things and working the issues until you get things put back together for yourself. I'm sure it's needless to say, but let us know if there's anything we can do to help out. Man... Now I'm depressed... I hate when stuff like this happens to friends...
I know how that is, my house got burgled a little over a year ago. Makes you wanna find the thieves, tie them up, and ask them why they did it, why they don't have a real, decent, self-respecting job. It helps if you tazor them for every wrong or BS answer, yeup, 90,000 volts is it? That should set their mind in order., hehe, j/k, well maybe, it would feel awfully good to do that to a person who stole from you. Anyways, best of luck, and insurance will be your savior.
Have found a basic website, still being built, but good for downloading midi files for use as polyphonic ringtones, over 10000 files, Also picture graphics for picture messaging. http://www.kidnappedtoys.co.uk, point your WAP browser there to download Mark
I have 10 Ringtones for download so far on my site. A460. http://footose.ods.org Does anyone know how to refresh the browser? The only way I can find is to take the battery out of the phone and hook it back up. P.S> That s_cks about your place JQS .. Time to claim insurance for a better phone
Does anyone know what format the BSS files are on the A460? i can't figure it out and i really want to start a BSS section on my site.
Suggestion for the site. Make an html frontend as well so that users can see what music you have without wasting airtime minutes. Also, can the phone use -any- midi file (assuming the file size limit is met)?
That's a good idea. Uhmm.. I'll see what I can do .. As far as i know it can use an standard windows midi file, works for everyone i've tried so far.
when trying to access the site on my phone, I received a message that said its an invailed something, please contact your service provider, any idea whats going on, please email beack with any info and if you need anything else let me know, thanks...
FOOTOSE..... went to your site on my phone... worked fine till i went to an actual song... went to TV, TRANSFORMERS... got error 406:unacceptable.. am i doing something wrong? i was so close!!!!
Bell.ca and the Free Ringtones Database ([L=ringtones.frostzone.com]http://ringtones.frostzone.com/L]) allow users to obtain ringtones (the former, for a fee) with your computer, but have them sent directly to your phone. Now, my phone is not currently WAP-enabled (read: until monday), but there must be some way to -send- the file to your cell if these companies can. Yes, you would have to pay airtime fees and maybe even a fee for the transfer of the file, but the same would be said about footose's project.
Actually, the way Bell Mobility (and everyone else) sends ringtones to your phone is via SMS. However you must have the wireless web activated. Why? Read on... When I first go my a460 I went to Bell Mobility's website, searched for ringtones and asked to buy one. (My last one, I hate paying for crap like that...) What happened next is very interesting... A SMS message came to my phone regarding the ringtone. It said it was going to launch my browser, and incur charges for it in order to get the ringtone. I said yes and within moments my ringtone was downloading. (I had to sya yes, to pay $2.50 for the tone...) So what happens, is a specially formatted SMS message tells the phone to start the browser to go and get the ringtones... This is how 'Download Fun' works... This, presumably, cannot be emulated but we are trying.
Hey man, try it again. The server is on dialup....So it could've been busy / down when you were trying to download it. I just checked that file and it seems to work for me. Give it another shot. Don't forget to remove your battery and reinsert it to "refresh" your cache on the phone.
You can refresh the cache on your phone without talking the battery out... When you are in the Mobile Browser (UP.Browser) hold the MENU key until a new menu comes up... (The one with bookmarks etc...) Choose 6. Advanced... Then 4. Restart Browser... Tha'll get it done for you... (and you may not miss any calls while your phone is resetting...) --jqs
Hello..read this forum the other day and figured Id get into the action Anyway, from what I can tell the reason some people are getting the error messages is because they have Sprint PCS?. Unfortunately I have NOT found a way to download ringers on your own on this service. jqs, have you had anyone using Sprint PCS goto your site and dump their mimes/etc? Also, have you been able to download other things...like games using Bell?
yes, as stated before at the top of this thread... if you have Sprint PCS you can't download from my site Not that I don't want you too, Sprint doesn't!
Man ... I just got the a460 a couple days ago, and this issue was one of the first to come to my mind. I asked my friend who knows tons more about phones than me, and he told me to check out this forum. Well, then I found my way to this thread, and yeesh, it went into pretty thorough detail about the subject. Just posting to say thanks a bunch to all the efforts of everyone here, most notably jqs and footose! I just finished visiting your site footose (through my phone), and all went well. I'm amazed there's actually something like this for Canadian users, usually all the cool stuff happens primarily in the U.S. and we're left wishing. Hopefully someone can come up with something for all the sprint users ... it would be cool for them, as it seems most of the people asking for something like this in this forum are on sprint and from the U.S. Thanks again, just wanted to give my acknowledgements to amazing research and implementation!
FOOTOSE and JQS... I am a Sprint user in the U.S.. Is there anything i can do to help in the collection of info, that you guys are trying to get, so U.S. (and us) Sprint users would be able to download content to our phones? Let me know i'll do anything i can to help. thanks.
I'm glad most of you are getting use of the site so far. I know I know, It needs more songs, but I'm still in the need of a good MIDI cropping tool As for Sprint Users, I think your pretty out of luck, because it seems sprint has blocked that file type. Again JQS has better info than me on this topic!
Footose, im not to sure if this will help. But if you goto the site I have linked...they have a program called psmplay you can download at the top of the page. Its a really nice tool to have. Ringer Search Take it easy folks!
What loophole did Bell Mobility leave that Sprint covered? I realize that no one in Canada has the pleasure of dealing with Sprint, but I think the same process could be used. If someone could simply point me in the general direction of how to find the MIME types for Sprint phones, I would be most appreciative. Keep the directions fairly simple as this is not a type of task I have a vast amount of knowledge about. Any help would be appreciated. I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas!!!
Try "Anvil Studio". works fine for me. Yeah, its a bit bloated if all you want is something to crop (since its a composer and all), but it does the trick. I have some ringtones I can contribute (mostly pop/rap songs). I've been cropping them to approx 30-40 secs to keep filesize down.
To uncover why US-based a460's dont download the songs from other websites, we should get a user to download one from frostzone.com (theres a link with the polyphonic ring tones to have them sent directly to your phone). The site is free, and if it works, then there -must- be a way around it. We'd also have to have a canadian Bell user do the same (After i get net features enabled on my phone tomorrow, i can do it and find out). If it doesnt work w/ the US phone, they could call Sprint and inform them of the problem (ie, tried to download ringtone from other website, didnt work). This could also demonstrate a way to send them directly to ones phone, as in the forementioned "Specially-Formatted SMS message", which I assume is a message with a hyperlink to the ringtone. On another note, I am somewhat ignorant of the WAP protocol. Are the WAP sites actually normal websites with content written specifically for WAP-enabled browsers? Obviously footose's is, but if Sprint's is too, couldnt one download a WAP-browser for their PC, download and *GASP* pay for a sprint ring-tone, and try to find out exactly what's being sent to and from the server? If Sprint's proprietary position on the ringtones is simply a differently named MIME-type that samsung wrote in their software, (download/x-Sprintlicks-mid), then there might be another way to get around it. Just my $0.02CA
Hrm, I may have uncovered something in another forum. http://www.wirelessadvisor.com/waforums/messageview.cfm?catid=24&threadid=7170 A user complained about getting a 403: Forbidden message when trying to download ringtones from -Sprint's site-. In response, a Sprint Tech Rep replied: So apparently its not a "hole" that Great Sprint covered, and Inferior Bell missed. It's Sprint's inferior software programmers that are responsible! So in the mean time, wait (indefinately, apparently) until they've updated the software, and then download like mad! This will allow us canadians to stockpile some wicked a460 ringtones =]
Thanks man, but the A460 takes Polyphonic MIDI files, any basic midi that you can download from the internet will work on this phone. The only problem is the midi files need to be cropped to work. The ones I have on my site I've basically cropped the "best" portion of the song, or the loudest portion so that when the phone rings you will beable to hear it. An example (and one of my favourites) is the Empire Star Wars theme. It has one line of "low" intro music then it comes in with the loud "da da da ..da nah nah da nah nah".. :hehehe: you'll have to download it to see The popularity of my "cellphone" site is increasing. I'd like to put up new ringers everyday, however I really, Really need a midi cropping tool. Something basic. I don't need to edit notes or anything, just physical length. Cut, Paste, etc. Kinda like the original "Sound Recorder" for Win 3.1. If you have ringtones you want to see on my site, make sure they are 5.5kb's or less You can email them (ZIP THEM) and label them approiately. Include the following in the title of the midi file you will be sending me. Genre, Artists, Title of Song email them to harry@hscanlan.com and title the email "A460 Ringtones" Please make sure you name the subject line exactly as above, otherwise your email will be deleted. At this point, due to the lack of editing software, I will not post any song that is above 5.5 KB's, but if they are in compliance I will post them on the site without hesitation! So.. Send me the ringers you want to see WML is very tricky, and very picky when it comes to internet. Some people may have noticed sometimes my site will return an error (even if your on bell) because maybe I forgot to put a SLASH or a closing braket or whatever. It's picky But I'm getting used to it. Anyway people, send me your ringtones (in midi format) to my email address and I will put them up.
i read all of this thread today in hopes of finding a way to download ringers on my a460 but alas i'm using sprint. i was just wondering why there are sites out there for sprint pcs vision customers using a460 phones to download ringers but if you're not a visions customer why cant you get those ringers? what's different about sprint pcs visions?
Yup, I've got the MIME codes from Sprint.. SOrry I'm away from my computer right now so I'll have to post them later... --jqs
What we know so far... Most downlaods to phones are via 'Download Fun' -- OpenWave-Download Fun Info... All downloads that are initiated via the phone's browser under the 'Fun & Games' menu are using Download Fun Download Fun is a server / product from Openawave -- OpenWave... All downloads to your phone initiated via a regular browser use an SMS message properly encoded that shows where the file to get is... This usually points to a Download Fun server... The coded SMS message tells the phone to fetch the content and what to do with it... Providing Download Fun content requires an agreement between you and the carrier. When you download content from a Download Fun server the content is renamed so that you can get it specifically, IE: axel_f_416xxxxxxx.mid (xxxxxx = your cell's phone number...) You must use the phone's built-in browser to download ringtones etc... Bell Mobility screwed up and left open a back door... MIME types that describe to the phone what the content is: ringtones etc... Bell did not leave doors open for the a310... At least not MIME types (if they do indeed exist for that phone... NO confirmation on this yet!) An a460's largest ringtone can be 8k (8192 Bytes) Different carriers restrict/filter different content (MIME types) from their users. A free WAP gateway doesn't nesc mean better service. What we don't know... How to initiate a download for those people (Anyone who is not on Bell Mobility...) who can't download from footose's server... How to encode an SMS message to initiate a download. What I'm researching... How to encode an SMS message to start a conent download What is the file format for content besides MIDI (ringtones)... Writing a website that will better enable us to investigate any cell phone's MIDI types as well as other characteristics... (IE: screen size etc...) When will I be done? Time will tell...
