You can't just change the MIME type under Win98... It won't work. IIS is used as a webserver to allow the phone's browser to download the files. IIS doesn't run under Win98 but you can get IIS PWS (Personal Web Server) and that will run. Babies come from storks...
IIS (Internet Information Services) is only on platforms such as XP/NT/W2K ... But like I said, we should probably "group" our efforts. I know I can supply the space and the MIME type for people to get, and even the bandwidth (hell they are only gonna be between 2kb's and 8kb's anyway) but I need someone to hook up either a midi editor (or tell me a good one) or just a zip of already cropped midi's!
im sure that will come in due time; search google for "midi editor" ?? that most probably will work. but i wanna try to get the a310 working as well. i never thought the a460 was an issue seeing as my friend who knows nothing about cell phones had songs on his a460 for well over 6 months? but i guess it doesnt work anymore. ehh lets just get the a310 to workk
Not sure if this link will work or not, but try it: http://download.com.com/3000-2171-10114307.html?tag=lst-0-1 If it doesn't, go to download.com and search for Anvil Studio. It looks like a pretty decent MIDI editor...
I don't currently have a server or anything, but I'd be willing to offer what help I can coding a website for downloading A310 and A460 ringers.
I might have a MIDI editor, but it has long been in storage. I will have to look for it, dust it off, and make some music. No promises though. I'll let you know en la manana... I'll try the IIS PWS. Is it included with Windows? Storks are cool!
Status on the a310: Last night Hideo came by my 'discovery' website with his phone and I got the MIME types it can handle... The bad news: there was nothing cut and dry about it... Nothing that screamed 'download'... The good news: Hideo was not usingthe standard Verizon WAP gateway, but one of the free ones. We believe that the WAP gateway (a proxy really) can control what types of infromation is passed. So we're resonably assured that once he switches back to Verizon we'll get different results. We'll let you know once we're done testing! Going forward... If someone has five minutes, an a460, and is not on Bell Mobility (Canada). Can you email me? I want to see what MIMI types come up for this phone under another carrier.
Certainly, send me an email (from my profile) and I'll let you know where to go to test it... Thanks!
News! There seems to be some problems that need to be addressed before everyone assume the soltuon is complete. By testing a few different a460s from different providers (Bell, Telus, Sprint) I've determined that the WAP carrier has some degree of control over what MIME types are supported. This is either by design or by the product they are using as a gateway. So far, only Bell Mobility in Canada has left the door open to the 'download/' MIME types. However, I will be investigating some of the other MIME types that are available to us to see if they can be used in any form. This is also to save my own skin if Bell decides to pull the plug on the 'download/' MIME types... By the end of this weekend I will have a new website online that will allow anyone with any model of phone to 'browse' by, input their carrier and have the results logged into a database. From that, once we've determined a particular solution we will be able to apply it to other vendors' phones. And it will allow for anyone ot come by and see if there is a solution to their particular phone. When I get the site up I will post the address on this forum (and others)... //James
I notice you have Sprint as your provider. I would not necessarily assume the advice in this thread applies to you. Note that I'm not saying it won't -- it may very well work this way -- but I do know for a fact that many Vision services phones (both Samsung and LG) do not have a special MIME type for midi (other than the normal sound/midi type). But there's an easy way to test this: go to any of the Vision content sites and download some of the ringers there. If they download and work correctly, then you know you do *not* want to follow the advice in this thread. Here's a few: http://www.3gvisioncorrection.com/wap/ pcs.geckotek.net www.kelleytown.com/kv.html (ahem -- permit me to plug my own site) I'll reiterate: all of these sites are for VISION PHONES ONLY.
James, Sorry I didn't pay close attention to your post before I posted a response to the Sprint guy. I can be of some help to you here, however. With Sprint Vision services, the MIME types for midi are sound/midi. You also need the GCD mime type added (um, text/x-pcs-something that I don't remember off the top of my head. If you need this write me and I'll find it, or you can easily find it yourself on the web. The GCD file is a text file that issues instructions to the phone about download content and directory. I have more info on this if you're interested). So for my Samsung A500, for example, on my site I have midi configured as normal, the GCD type and the qcp type (for wave type files -- this is a clear voice poor quality audio type I wouldn't recommend using). I know nearly any Vision phone works with my site (screensavers are another issue -- the LG5350, for example, has width issues and must have a smaller width than any other phone or it crashes). You are doing a tremendous service to everyone pulling all this information together. Some day maybe it will all make sense. LOL.
Sweet, I'd love the info about the GCD files... I was originally looking at that as a solution for the a460 until I found the 'easier' way, however, I want to have a solution for all... The GCD files seem to be the be all / end all for downloading!
Here's a good (if lengthy) discussion on GCDs that might be of help. http://www.wirelessadvisor.com/waforums/messageview.cfm?catid=24&threadid=8825 But let me summarize it first: the GCD is just a text file (albeit with special carriage codes at the end of each line -- while you can create it in notepad you need to be careful how you create it programmatically. I got into all kinds of trouble writing it out with a VB program until I used the FileSystemObject) that points to the location of the actual media file. On the sprintusers.com site there is a GCDCreator tool free for the downloading that will create GCD files automatically for you -- I'm not sure if these will end up being Sprint specific, but it's worth a look. Keep the information flowing -- now if only there were some place I could find out how to configure WML so it will recognize a WAP device (and therefore route non-WAP devices elsewhere) I'd be a happy man.
Cool, I know all about the FileSystemObject... DO you have a sample of such a file that you can email to me? I'll have that info on my website by the weekend's end...
You mean a sample of the GCD file? Or the VB code to write it? I have both, and will be glad to email to you (although I'm going home for the rest of the day and won't be computing again until tomorrow, I don't think). Glad to hear about having the WML info -- I really need to configure my site so PCs can see it one way and WAP devices another.

Thanks!
I dont think GCD's apply to us? Anyway, I'm still on the search for a midi editor so we can all have great stuff I'm just about to try uploading a picture to the phone using WBMP, no one has tried this yet I assume? I'lll report back in a few minutes after I draw one
OH BTW, if you are looking for WML sites, check these out. I got a site up in about an hour with pictures! we shoudl really move that to another thread though. JQS: You may want to start a new thread w/ a compilation of your findings. I'd be more than happy to assist. http://www.w3schools.com/wap/wml_examples.asp http://www.devarticles.com/art/1/85/2
Ive read all 3 pages of this post... hhmm.. u guys seem pretty smart. I have been looking for a while to put some ringers on my a460 carried by sprint. but i didnt want to pay for the ringers and tones. looks like a couple of u have made some breakthroughs and i really cant wait for that site to go up. I checked to see if ur site worked at my school today footose. the one carried on ur 56k. well it did, then i got home! and either u took it down or ur just not online. hhmm well i would really like to test it out! is that all i need to do if u put some midi's up? is type it into my Wireless web on my phone and choose to save it? if so that would be great, i plan on doing the whole MIME thing though and putting my own midis up for people to download, just wanted to test it out before i start doing all of that. Thanks.
Hi all, Possibly silly question: Do I need to have WirelessWeb activated on my PCS account to do this trick? It seems that I WOULD need it in order to do step 12 in footose's post: 12) use your cellphone to surf to your IP address.. (Ex. http://127.0.0.1/)"browse to a local server." Or can I do it somehow WITHOUT WirelessWeb? I just got my A460 and I would like to change ringtones, screens, games, etc. if possible. Yesterday I picked up the FutureDial USB cable from Radio Shack. Since I DON'T have wireless web, I would prefer to download directly over the cable. I will be playing with the cable/software more in the next few days. By the way, does anyone know which Qualcomm chipset is inside the A460 ? Anyone know where to find it? I have been reading this info with great interest. Keep up the great work!
Hey Guys! Good news, I found a midi Editor that .. well works..sorta..if anyone has a real good one let me know. All it has to do is crop the length of the files. Anyway, I did have a chance to edit a few files so far. Slow but sure! This site is not perm, but it will give you an idea what to do when you want to download. http://216.154.63.32/public/midi/ enter that into your phone and a listing of files will show Seinfield.mid Tetris_B.mid Select one and goto "save" on your A460 (don't think this will work right now on a a310 sorry guys but your more than welcomed to try) I've downloaded both of them to my phone and they work perfectly, Seinfeld one just fit ont he phone so I didn't edit it but the Tetris_B one i made it loop feel free to try it, it should be up until i reboot this computer at which time the IP address will change... I may get one of those surf-to type deals for now until we actually get everything up and running on a perm site.
This is probably a really stupid question but how do i type in a web address on my phone, i can get on the wireless web and everything and go through the web portals and messaging but how do i type in a custom address?
i'm not so sure on your phone, but using bell.ca you can "add" menu's to your phone via the internet, and i just added in my website from there, so when my phone loads up i can goto "my menu" and then it will be there. However, I do know if your on a website on your phone (WML) you can press the menu button, and a screen will pop up and 4 options will appear, one of them should be "goto a website" or along those effect... try that.
The non-believers will still be non-believers... I've found that only Bell Mobility is allowing us to download ringtones... Sad but true...
Footoose, did you ever figure out AnvilStudio? Unfortuntely, from what it looks like, you have to delete notes from each individual track instead of being able to delete bars from all of the tracks at once on the mixer screen... I've gotten it working though... I shortened an Indiana Jones theme song MIDI to an appropriate length... (2.32k)
