I'm new to the forum..... Lots of great info, and great people.

I just got a ppc-6800 through Alltel and I'm confused about roaming and Alltel isn't being too helpful. My phone connects to the internet via "Alltel Wireless (Dial-up)" it says. But the roaming indicator stays on all the time - never flashing.

I've been told by tech support that the indicator on this phone isn't reliable, but if it connects to the internet O.K. then my phone calls are not "roaming calls".

Anyone know if ths is true, or am I going to get a huge bill at the end of the month.
I'd like to find out so I can switch.

I've got an Alltel U prepaid phone that does the same thing, except my roam indicator flashes.
I was told by C/S not to worry about it, that it just means the phone is looking for service. I have been checking the balance and usage frequently, and so far I have not been charged any roaming.

From what I hear, if it is flashing, that means you're on a "preferred network", and there's no roaming charges....

This does not apply to any smartphones, though. They don't follow the ERI program.

Bottom line is that the OP was told correct information. If the phone can connect to the internet via it's browser, then phone calls won't be roaming; if it can't then it IS roaming.

Thanks for the confirm Brian. So it's either on or off with the indicator huh. I did find out that the SID i'm using is for Verizon, and from what I understand, one of Alltels roaming partners. I've learned a lot in the past few hours.......:banghead:
It does work well with the internet though.

I feel a bit more confident now..

This guy helped me out (He may not know it)

When I went out of state to visit NY from where I live in Kansas, I stopped over on the plane to Atlanta to La Guardia then stayed in Danbury CT. My friends all have Alltel and I used their phones to check whether we were roaming. Everyone had the flashing R/triangle except me (PPC6700). The only killer was I could only connect at 1x :(. But it was all covered.

Now I know how to flash my PRL so I can use roaming on EVDO. I downloaded it and got it to work in and it works great. PM me if you want help but it's a Google away.
