Was AT&T - now Cingular - oops, now AT&T again.
Probably a silly question, but, is there a way to convert a song you have purchased into a ringtone for your phone?

There may be other file formats you can use, but you can definitely use a file in the MP3 format.

Phones with at&t branded firmware typically require a clipped version in order to use it as a ringtone. Likely if you shorten it to 30 seconds or less (Audacity is a free download you can use to make clips) the file will be small enough.

Here is the at&t features/specifications page - it gives some specifics about ringtone file formats, etc.
