Funny that you asked. It was leaked today that ringback tones will be available beginning in February. Personally, I'd rather shove a hot fork up my rear end than have to listen to ringback tones, but to each his own, I guess....

Here are the details as announced on another site I cannot name here (HINT: AWT....WK is the man!):

    • Axcess Ringback Tones service is available for a $0.99 monthly recurring charge plus a $1.99 charge per song title per year.
    • Axcess Ringback Tones is available on all handsets, thus every Alltel Customer can subscribe to this service.
    • Axcess Ringback Tones Customers can save up to 15 different Ringback tones to the Alltel server.
    • Axcess Ringback Tones Customers can modify their profile to assign different Ringback Tones to specific callers or groups of callers.

Direct the Customer to the RingBack Tones Axcess Shops or to www.alltel.com/buytones

Customers can also Self-subscribe to Ringback Tones by:
    • Activating via Axcess Shops
    • Activating via SMS
    • Activating via www.alltel.com/buytones

    Due out February 19th, 2007

Yeah, this starts in Feb...don't see the appeal of it but whatever floats your boat!

Make sure and select the tab for ringbacks and are searching by ringbacks. It is pretty straight forward on that site.

If you want to get the ringback tones that alltel now offers I'd wait a little bit. I went online to set up my service yesterday and it still is not working on my phone. I called tech support at alltel and they told me that they knew it was an issue and there was already a ticket open. Seems like everything new that alltel comes out with it doesn't work at first... including their phones.

Title: Alltel Wireless and Motricity Launch Axcess Ringbacks
    Date: 1/22/2007 8:00:00 AM

Alltel Continues to Push Rich Mobile Experience
    DURHAM, N.C. & LITTLE ROCK, Ark.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 22,
2007--Alltel Wireless, America's largest network, today announced the
launch of its "ringback tones" service that enables customers to
choose a song or sound that callers will hear while waiting to be
connected to the customer. The ringback tone catalogue includes music
from a variety of genres including hip hop, rock and country and
enhances Alltel's offerings of other device "customization" products,
    including, games, ringtones and wallpapers.
Motricity's award-winning Fuel technology platform allows Alltel
customers to buy ringback tones from the internet, SMS and WAP.
Ringback tones are now integrated with the current Storefront that
Motricity already provides for Alltel Wireless - allowing customers to
buy ringtones, graphics and now ringback tones from a central source.
"Alltel Wireless continues to offer services that enable customers
to live a mobile lifestyle that reflects their unique personality,"
said Ryan K. Wuerch, CEO of Motricity, a leading provider of mobile
content services and solutions. "Motricity is focused on helping
companies like Alltel bring a mobile experience that is fun, easy and
personalized and we are pleased that Alltel has again chosen Motricity
    as a strategic business partner."
"Motricity has been an important partner in Alltel's commitment to
provide our customers the industry's most satisfying mobile
experience," said Scott Moody, director of data services for Alltel
Wireless, noting that ringbacks is the latest example of that
commitment. "Last year, we broke down the carrier calling barrier on
the voice side with 'My Circle.' This year, we bring customer choice
and control to the user experience with Celltop by making it easy for
our customers to tailor their mobile experience to reflect their
    personalities, preferences and lifestyles."

The pricing is in line with VZW and Cingular as well: $0.99/month and $1.99/tone. I think that TMobile charges $1.49/month and MetroPCS charges $1.75/month. The down side (not really) is that you're limited to 15 tones.
