Hi I recently bought a samsung a930 off ebay and it was used but I need to erase the phone number because verizon won't let me activate it because the previous owner had a 200.00+ default so I need to erase/change it so they can't tell who had it thanks. I already did the system reset but that doesn't effect the number.

The phone won't "erase" the old number until a new one is programmed in. Resetting the phone won't fix this, as you've discovered.

Unfortunately, it was on e-Bay because the seller didn't want to pay his bill. If you want to buy a CDMA handset (one that would work with Verizon or Sprint) off the e-Bay, ask for the "IMEI" number. If the seller won't provide it, don't buy it. You can use this number to verify, with the provider it was used on, if the phone is tied to an account in default/collections or if it was stolen.

Is there a way to Change the ESN on this phone? A downloadable program? Giving somebody $$ ?

Unfortunately no. The ESN number for the phone cannot be changed and it looks like Verizon won't activate it because it is linked to the account of the previous owner. I hate to say it but you got had on this one. Buyer beware next time.

This is one of the big reasons I don't trust e-Bay for buying cell phones.

I'm sure they can IF the ESN is needed on an account, but since SIM cards make the use of ESN's to identify a phone to an account useless, I don't think it is an issue as much as on the CDMA side.
