We're planning to install a repeater at our rural Tennessee facility. It's a valley location. The floor of the valley has too little signal for my phone to ID a tower (debug mode). The surrounding hills have line of site to the nearest VZW tower. We have asked AT&T and VZW for a tower for years. Their response is that there are too few people in the valley to justify the expense. Consequently, a repeater is the answer. I was asked a question on this subject, for which I had no answer. Is a repeater legal? I've Googled this, but the results are inconclusive. Does anyone have an answer to this question? Thanks!
Yes they are, provided that they do not interfere with the normal operation of the cellular network. I think the FCC has a limit on their power output as well. -Jay
That's a split answer. Cellular repeaters/boosters are illegal if you are not either licensed by the FCC or give explicit permission from the licensee to operate that device on their frequencies. In your situation it sounds like you could get support from the carriers to do it if you're footing the bill.
I really do not think that the carriers have a problem with this since they are not interested in paying for cellular service in our valley. Thanks both of you for the information.
