I've read all the recent threads on the 4500 and have not seen a hint of the issue I am having. Received my 4500 in the mail last week, and am pretty stoked about all the features, but the reception (despite the bars display) is worse than any other verizon phone I've used and in fact the T-mobile nokia 8900 i was using. A call will sound fine, but then every 5-30 seconds randomly the sound will cut out for a split second like the connection faded out. This is VERY VERY annoying and I have never experienced it with any other phone except when having no bars of reception. Am I crazy? I even went to the store and experienced the same with the display model. I asked a service tech if they had any software updates or could switch mine for a new one to see if it was buggy, and he said that the reception is pretty crappy with the 4500 and might have to do with being digital 'only'. He did say there is a software update coming out in two weeks which 'might' help, or might not. If I want to switch to a different phone, my 14 days is very close to up so I would like input asap. Thank you.
I havent had that problem at all. I would say that it is most likely a problem with ur phone. One thing you can do is go into the feild test and see what the readings are. you are interested in the RX power (the lower this number the better, as long as its below like 95-100 you should be ok) the Ec/Io and the TX power (TX power wont show anything until you make a call) to get to the field test menu: menu -> 0 -> 000000 -> 2 ->1 (just hit those keys and you will get to the field test screen) My only reception issue has been that it takes it a while to call after I hit send or in a very few areas it will miss a call every once in a while (without ringing) these 2 issues usually happen in my room which I have noticed has this problem where the "Ec/Io" is relatively high. I didnt know what this number meant till a few minutes ago: (a definition of) Ec: A measure of how strong individual connections from the tower are compared to everything that the tower is transmitting. Compares the pilot signal to the overall level of traffic, but this is a good indicator of how your connection compares to the overall level of traffic from the tower. -3 dB to -8 dB is usually a “good” Ec. When Ec gets larger, like -10 dB or -15 dB phones will start having trouble maintaining their connections, even with full signal. my Ec seems to fluctuate between 8-23 and I think that is causing my problem
Great info Orioles I just checked mine, after I go to the screen, the Ec is around -7, then after about 30 seconds it jumps to about -30, sits there for a few seconds then goes back down to around -7 again and stays there. That is consistent with what I mentioned in the other thread...about sometimes about 30 seconds into a conversation it will become hard to hear the person for a few seconds....then comes back and is fine for the rest of the call.
Does this happen everywere or Just at home? By the way, I saw and add for the v60s selling at $39.99/w a 2 yeaar contract.
I have found this only happens in very specific places (unfortunately the main place i notice it is in my dorm room! where I am using my phone the most) I am going to find some friends with Verizon and see if its a consistent problem with verizon or if for some reason its the 4500 thats having the problems.
Yeah, test mode all the phones and look at the TX. Your oncampus towers may be overloaded. It happens in Manhatan at certain times of day in certain places with Verizon.
I will post the info as soon as i can find it out ... I may need help in getting into their test modes .. do u know how to do it in a V60, or a samsung N300 (i can do some research on i I just thought I would ask in case u knew it off the top of your head)
v60/v120 is ##33284 then send i belive. Menu+ left sopft key to get in/out of it. repeat ##33284 to get out for good. LG's are all the same. Don't know wee the tx on them all is though. Can't rember were the v60 tx is but there was an explination of the v60's feild test screen on this site. You can message search for it. What other phones do you need it for.
Yo Matt, on Samsung phones try menu + 0(or setup..usualy0)+ * + 000000 and that should get you acces to the debug screen. You haver to repeat the process to get out of it.
If it's a capacity issue, then that would make sense as to why I have no problem at all. The last estimate the tech guy gave us was that we use on average 3% of the capacity we have in this market.
i know of your problem. several coworkers of mine use the 4500 and are dropping calls like crazy and finding it does not hold weaker signals very well. its not because its digital only. my phone is digital only and i get perfect reception where they are having the issues. in fact my last phone (lg4400) i put on CDMA only (all dig) mode and it worked better than on trimode. i think there is something wrong with a lot of the 4500 phones
good to hear at least one other person experiences this, i'm going over to another store right now to check out their phones. this happens in my house and at the office, where i haven't had problems with any other phones and know people with verizon phones at both locations. so i don't think it is capacity related. also i turned off auto volume and enhanced voice security which doesn't change a ntyhing. i checked the field test screen and am seeing the numbers you mention.
bluestone -- can you tell me what the numbers look like? especially the EC/Io. Dru -- I just tried my friends samsung, and his test screen isnt nearly as organized as the LGs (it was basically numbers and letters that were not descriptive at all). but after a while I think i found the one on his that corresponds to my Ec/Io and his fluctuated from 8-13 while mine was fluctutaing from 8-30 (i was holding them side by side) not a very good sign I actually thought it was funny because my reception was actually better than his (my Rx was like 4 or 5 better than his)
the ec/io fluctuates from -6 to -15, once in awhile will jump to -30 rx power hovers around 80, sometimes as low as 70 up to high 90s. do the big jumps in ec/io maybe explain the reception? it's been a little better the past few days, hard to replicate the problem, only crackles like once a minute now but still noticeable
If it "crackles" you might have a bad phone. The loss of packets will either result in parts of your conversation missing, or garbled sound. It should never crackle. Here's how I have tested capacity issues with my LG VX4400: when I go to a Clemson game, there are about 85,000 people trying to use their cell phones (most likely because we are all loaded from tailgating.... alcohol = drunk phone calls) and my phone will simply refuse to connect. As far as RECEPTION issues, I usually don't hear too much in terms of garbled audio, but the phone will simply lose the call and "Call Lost!!!" will appear on the screen. In defense of Motorola (shudder), my T720/730 would give me garbled audio before it lost the call, but I'm not sure that is necessarily a good thing. I have consistent RX power of about -85 at my apartment here and have not lost a call yet. My Ec/I0 is usually between -5 and -10, so there aren't too many people using VZW around here apparently. Basically it boils down to this: if your Ec/I0 is high you will drop calls, even if you are standing directly under a VZW tower. I have heard some dirty rumors about the 4500 around here that make me mad because I recommended the phone to my mom, who is now experiencing similar problems at our house in rural Southwestern NY... calls dropping with her new 4500 that did not drop with her POS Moto v120C. From what I can tell from personal experience, the LG phones are spectacular in many aspects, and mine has never had a reception problem. I get the impression that Nokia phones tend to hold their signals the best, and I still do miss my old Nokia 6185 (damn VZW for not letting me use it on a SingleRate East/America's Choice plan).
The big jumps in Ec/Io is probably what is causing the problems you are having. I mean reception usually stays pretty constant in a certain location so if its cutting in and out its probably that its having trouble maintaining its connection to the tower. Hmm, since so many people are having problems with high Ec/Io numbers on this phone (and i havent heard of this problem before) i wonder if its a problem that only this phone is having.
Besides me getting a -97ish signal with my 4400 versus a -84ish signal with other phones, my 4400 showed an ECIO of around 30 very often, hence mucho dropped calls! Stupid campus, everyone is from NJ/NY where Verizon rocks, and many Delaware people have Verizon too, which leads to too many calls and thus drops!
Great, just when i had decided to get a 4500 i start reading upon these problems, gotta have a speakerphone, anyone used the v60s?
Tony E -- what happened with the Slider? FYI -- I have not had the problems that are mentioned with reception. So far, my 4500 has worked great.
Though it's a sleek little phone, it was dropping calls where my 6k,4400,v60i,Audi 9500, do not. I really liked the speakerphone on the Slider but i gotta have good RF on my phones. So you say your 4500 is working out great for you?
Hmm, this is wierd we are seeing problems so late with the 4500. Same happened with the 4400, everyone loved it at first then some people started having problems with it. The 6000 seems to have escaped the pattern though! Cwick, at least you aren't dropping calls like I was. TonyE, yup RF is very important. Have you ever tried the nokia, I can't remember? It works slightly better than the 9500 in my experiences.
I used to use Nokia phones all the time with ATT and though i like Nokia phones in order for me to consider a Nokia it would have to be a little smaller than Verizon's current offering, say like the one T-Mobile offers, not sure the model number, hopefully Verizon and Nokia will give their customers something to look forward to style wise.
Yeah, the 6225 or 6585 would be nice. I plan on checking out the 6225 (camera phone) with Sprint, along with the SE T616 and Motorola v400 on Cingular.
i have not had any reception problems, but today in jersey around 4:15/4:30, my 4500 disconnected my call and i could connect to anyone for a couple of minutes with a full signal...someone said they could have been doing some upgrades in the area in jersey, exit 24 on 78
seems like experiences are varied so it may not affect all phones. those of you who have already commented, could you post again whether you have this jittery reception yes/no and software and hardware version? is there anything else that be useful info me yes sw T45VZV01 hw 1.1
I wondered why you disliked your 4400 so much! You definitely had one that had something wrong with its RF components if the Rx/Tx and Ec/I0 varied that much from other phones on VZW's network in the same location.
No, I had 2 4400's here at school. Plus my neighbor across me from had one. It's the 4400, it sucked in my room. Verizon plain sucks here, but that phone did not help. Capacity may have improved since then, but the 4400 was terrible with signal in my building
I got a hold on a 4500 yesterday, one of my friends has one and i was very impressed with the features and RF, i don't think that the 4500 has any reception problems, it must be a network problem for those who are dropping calls, LG just keeps making good phones.
My dad just got a 4500 today, so now my family is purely LG I am amazed by the solid phones that LuckyGoldstar has been putting out for Verizon in the past few years. I can't wait to see what their next released phone will be for VZW.
