Here is a post from another forum about coverage in Cali, I'm not familiar with California, so I don't know if this is Southern Cali or not; Here it is though:

Walked around North Beach, Chinatown and Nob Hill (okay, I took a cab too) using the new phone. It consistently registered 5 bars signal strength. Ear volume coulda been louder but it's not like I'm using the phone in a night club or anything. I swear I thought this phone had different color backlights selectable. Maybe I was wrong. The light blue one suits me fine though. GPRS.. what can I say? It worked, and it worked well. I previously used AT&T's PocketNet service and that was sloooow as heck, esp. during rush hour.

You know I have a friend in San Francisco who has Cingular and all of the sudden his phone has gotten way better. Use to I couldn't hear him when at home, now he is crystal clear and he has told me that of lately his phone doesn't fade out and drop calls nearly as much. He did get another phone though so maybe that was the problem, but maybe Cingular is starting to get their act together in that city.
