Just received a new line of service with a black RAZR V3 with Cingular over the weekend. I purchased the phone & service from Amazon - this is the 4th phone we have purchased from Amazon and I have had very good experiences with each of them - the phone worked out of the box with no issues whatsoever. I had ordered MPT4.0 as well and was hoping to use it with the USB-to-miniUSB cable I had with my digicam. However, upon receiving the software over the weekend, I realized that the USB cable required for the V3 had to have the new 5-pin mini-USB plug and not the older 4-pin mini USB that my digicam had. So, I waited till this morning until I could get to work and use my work laptop that had Bluetooth installed - that worked like a charm with MPT4.0 and now I have all my 600 contacts in my phone....lol.... Initial impressions: Pros: 1. RF - spectacular. I would say that it is on par with my wife's V557 which is impressive as well. 2. Looks - very nice. Nice screen, good solid feel to the hinge and the keypad. Overall very impressive construction. 3. Very thin - fits well in my jeans pocket. Cons: None yet..... I'm still handling it a bit gingerly, kind of like my V600 when I first got it. Probably will take a few weeks to get comfortable with the wider feel in my hands.
Congratulations on receiving your new phone Scrumhalf! I see you went with the black one. Pretty is'nt she? hehe.. I love it. It certainly does have great RF and who does'nt love that! lol ..I don't have any cons on having one myself either nor do i think i will. Enjoy it, i know i do mine!
Thanks, lilprincess2!! I am certainly enjoying it so far - as a bonus, I just got the unlock code mailed to me by Cingular today, so I now have an unlocked V3 about 1 week after ordering it...lol....
Well, we are planning a month-long trip to India in July, so the phones should come in handy. It is the land of our (my wife and I) birth, so we will be going around sightseeing and meeting family that we haven't seen in ages. The kids were born stateside, so this will be their first exposure to a foreign culture.
Wow, sounds both interesting and fun. I'm sure you and your family are going to have a wonderful time.
After a few days with the V3, I am more than happy with the way the phone is performing. The only beef I have is that the vibrate mode is very weak, much weaker than my V600. I spend a lot of time in meetings during the day and I have missed a couple of calls because I couldn't feel the phone vibrating in my pocket. Is this something that can be fixed with a seem edit?
No, that's dependent upon the strength of the vibration unit in the hardware. I think, because the RAZR is very thin, it's vibration unit is weaker than phones, such as the v600, that don't have the space constraints the V3 has.
Dang.... oh well, I still love the phone though. Just have to put it on "vibrate then ring" mode and pick a ring that sounds like my pager so that it doesn't irritate everyone else in the room...lol...
In that case you have several options to set it to something other than a ring Scrumhalf. Maybe one of the "chimes" would work or "chords" or maybe even "notify" or something like that. :browani:
Yeah... that's exactly what I did. I selected "vibrate then ring" and for the ringtone, I selected chimes high. That sounds kinda like a pager (we all carry pagers at work) and it is not as obnoxious when in a room.
Yeah... I know, I know.... ... I work at a place where all engineers need to be reachable 24x7, and I think the company would rather pay $10/mo for a 2-way pager than $30 or so for a phone for all employees.
We have it even worse, we have to carry pagers & cell phones. We have just gone to Nextel and have the option of using our personal phones for work if we don't want to go with Nextel. Srumhalf seems like the vibrate is getting weaker now a days, my PEBL has a weaker vibrate than my 6682, which was weaker than the 6230. Glad you like the RAZR, I don't have the unlock code for my V557 yet, I will wait until tomorrow and Cingular a call again...
Charlyee, a bit OT, but have you had your V557 for 90 days? I spoke to two different reps but both faithfully trotted out the party line that you had to have paid full retail price or have had the phone for 90 days (PHONE, not phone number/account, etc.) to get the code. The fact that I have had the account/number for close to 2 years cut no ice.
Scrumhalf thanks, no I have only had my V557 for a week. The Cingular rep I had didn't ask me how long I had it for just whether I paid full retail or not. Do you think that maybe the hold up? If so, are they going to let me know? I can wait 90 days, we have a trip to SE Asia and India planned in Fall and will not need it before that.
What kind of pager do you have? I always wanted a Motorola Timeport 2-way, but only because they look cool and it would be cool to have one in my collection. I never wanted to actually activate paging service... I didn't even think there were that many companies supporting it anymore.
I am not sure they check....I got the unlock code for my V3 about a week after I got it. They did ask whether I got it at a discount, and I answered that I paid $100 for it from Amazon which is the same that Cingular was charging at that time. So, you might get lucky - as long as they have not denied it outright there should be a chance, I think!
I have a Motorola T900 two-way on a national plan. Works pretty well in and around most metro areas in the US that I have been in but doesn't do too well even in towns on the Oregon coast for example that have good mobile coverage.
The Talkabouts are cool pagers. ReFLEX is supposed to be a pretty decent paging scheme. I know you don't get signal in some areas but do you find that your pager gets the messages most of the time when you are? Do you ever receive interference from other devices or other paging systems?
Yeah, the messages get stored on some server at the paging company and then dowloaded to the phone when you come into range. I have never had any problems with interference from other devices.
