I thought that the rate was 10¢ per message...I just got my bill, and it says that the (new) rate is 15¢

This must be a new thing, it was 10¢ last month....

The text messaging plan add-ons (300 for $5.99...750 for $9.99) are unchanged.

I barely use text, so i won't upgrade to a plan add-on deal.
But how could they just change these rates without notice?

That is correct, the per-message rate increased to $0.15 with Alltel. It began April 20th. You should have seen a bill message on the last page of your bill for the last few months.

I guess after one carrier raises rates and gets away with it, they will all follow.

This could become expensive, especially to those on the same account.

So if I text someone else on my account, it would be 30¢ per text.

Just 2 sent & 2 received messages would be $1.20...(4 x 15 x 2), so it actually looks like it just isn't worth it. :banghead:

Well, one carrier should then go lower, it will lure more customers in.
I sure hope this rate increase isn't permanent.

This is the way the Carriers get people to sign up for the SMS plans, it makes them more money in the long run.

No carrier is going to lower the SMS rates, especially after they all just followed each other in raising them.

At least we are starting to see more Unlimited SMS plans popping up.

Exactly... if you use a few text a month, $0.15/msg could add up and it would make sense to you to get a plan which, to the carrier is a guaranteed money, even if you don't send a text. Using Alltel as an example, their lowest text plan is $5.99/mo for 300 messages. About $0.02/msg, so it makes sense for you to buy a plan instead of paying $0.15/msg which could add up to $5.99 after only 40 messages... but it probably costs Alltel $0.00002 for you to send the message.

I love text messaging and I use it all the time but it is so totally a scam the way it's priced. Carriers make money hand over fist on text... but the wireless business isn't a charity.;)

And I surely don't think texts are worth $.15 (never mind that my phone only lets me type up to 160 characters).

I feel like I'm back in the 90s stuck using a payphone at $.25 per minute
(which is actually a better deal, as I can say alot more in a minute, than texting 160 letters)

    ...

I wonder if they purposely limit the text capacity in some phones, even newer ones. This way, they could make even more $$$ on those where 160 characters ain't enough (especially for those who write books/paragraphs).

I know someone who has a phone that could text up to around 9,000 charcters, and it's an older phone......
    so whats going on?

That's a good question. I honestly don't know... it may have something to do with how the network is set up. My PEBL will let me type as much as I want and then just break it up into separate messages. My v620 was the same way... though I can't remember if it broke it up or if that was done on the receiver's end? I guess I'll have to dig it out and see what it does.

My v620 is unbranded so maybe the 160 character limit has something to do with the carrier software loaded into phones purchased directly from them. It's weird that all the carriers use 160 as the limit.

This person I know has an old Tracfone, and is in use up in Northern NJ. So I'm definitely not going prepaid.
It's like 10 cents/message (1 unit of airtime) on the Tracfone

I guess GSM will allow you to send bigger texts? With all these Smartphones out now, I don't see the difficuly involved with sending big messages. People get lots of big Emails all the time (smartphone, or at home online).

If their gonna try and charge you 15 cents per message, at least let those messages be unlimited capacity.

Amen... but it's a cash cow so I don't see carriers extending the limit anytime soon.

In the mean time, about 4,400 texts @ $.15 = 1 ounce of 24k Gold (rate as of 6/24/2007)

I wonder how much gold the carriers cash the cows with :lmao:
