It may be a saving grace, but I really don't think this is what sprint needs to get out of trouble. I mean, my phone didnt work for 2 days for no reason, thanks sprint!

It's about time. It would be really cool if Verizon's forthcoming QChat works seamlessly with Sprint's as well. It would also be nice if AT&T and T-Mobile adopt QChat as well. Fingers crossed.

Kodiak hasn't worked well enough. Latency doesn't hold a candle to iDen and QChat. It never has. Verizon's just been stringing it along for the past 4 years. They only carry two phones PTT-capable, one is a crappy Kyocera dinosaur and the other is the Casio G-Zone phone. They never promote them.

the att PTT has lost attention but they still carry quiet a few choices. the initial connect takes a second but after that, the back and forth on it is pretty fast. i used it on my blackberry for awhile to talk with a friend in ATL time to time and i never had a problem.

i have to admit that was pretty darn fast in that vid though.

i wonder if this is the sign saying that they are going to merge their networks finally. the only thing is, there is already alot of people that have left and or stopped using direct connect. you do not seem them being used about town as much as you use to.

It's not that AT&T's PTT is bad in any way, but it doesn't hold a candle to iDEN. QChat is the first PTT option that most closely mirrors iDEN. Sprint NEEDS to do this for their survival. They can't continue operating multiple costly networks.

Granted, AT&T doesn't need to push the PTT issue, but they also do little in the way of promoting it. They could take a big bite out of Nextel's business base by having an equal-quality PTT option. Kodiak is good, but not good enough.

iDEN PTT is why Nextel is still around. There isn't much else it offers to further it's growth.

I want to make it clear that I'm not bashing Nextel. I had their service and was very happy with it, but I didn't need it after I left the company I worked for that used it. Nextel's coverage cannot compare to AT&T and Verizon. I had no real reason to keep it. PTT wasn't enough.

Well if Sprint wants this Qchat thing to be any good, they need to fully roll out EVDO NATIONWIDE. No more of this affiliate crap, an no more slowly rolling out EVDO. There are too many places left with just 1x coverage for qchat to be an end all for sprint.

no its definetly constructive what you said.

i think that there are some people that are getting a bit sensitive and not seeing the distinction.

i agree with all your statements :)

honestly i was wowed by the demo myself.

You said it. That's the key. No EV-DO, no QChat.

Well the only other carrier that Sprint roams on EVDO is Alltel, and I don't believe that alltel is EVDO rev. A.

well there was talk earlier this year that Sprint roaming agreements with Verizon were changing so that Sprint customers could use Verizon's EV-DO network

It's funny because Nextel actually has or had more cell sites than either AT&T or Verizon here in So. Cal. Nextel's cell site spacing mirrored that of a 1900 Mhz carrier even though they used 800 Mhz so in theory they should have had the best coverage. The only explanation as to why many people didn't like their coverage has to be blamed on the IDEN technology. It must have had really bad capacity limitations.

Luckily Alltel covers so much territory because their data roaming works very well. My brother was using it last night in fact while driving between LA and Reno on parts of Hwy 395.

I'm not surprised at this. I know when I had Nextel, the coverage and call quality was really good. When outside of it, though, it was a different story.

I'm in agreement with you. I think there must be capacity limitations inherent in iDEN technology. Since I'm not a super techie, I don't know this for sure, but there's a reason iDEN was not a technology adopted by more carriers.
