According to Engadget, Verizon's new enhanced PTT offering, based on QChat technology, is set for release soon. The recently announced Motorola V750 is one of the new PTT phones, along with the updated Casio G'Zone c711. Slight correction to the Verizon "QChat" item: It isn't exactly QChat but a variant like it called "BREWChat". Sprint owns the license with Qualcomm on QChat, but it's basically the same idea. Verizon's version will not be compatible with Sprint's, so no cross-carrier PTT. Both Sprint's and Verizon's enhanced PTT will be EV-DO Rev. A based. So they're finally dumping that ancient Kyocera  Since these new PTT phones will do ptt over EVDO revision A, will they access the same for other data or will they default to rev0?
Unless the carrier is foolish, they will default to the fast speed available. Faster speeds = more downloads = more profit.
Does anyone know when this new PTT service will be availabloe ? also can you talk to Nextel ptt customers?
I dont have the answer for the first question. For the second one, we will not be able to PTT any other non-Verizon users Each carrier's PTT works only on that carrier.
now if Verizon had QChat then maybe Sprint and Verizon could be interoperable......even able to possibly use the service when these carriers customers are roaming on each other......but Verizon is using the BREWchat which is different on the software level
I was reading at Engadget that Sprint has the exclusive rights to QChat... So if they can make BREWChat and QChat can be made interoperable, then we can make inroads... But I doubt that Sprint is going to be flexible or open with QChat.
It's hard to say how different the software really is. BREWChat is essentially QChat. The same rules apply. The only major difference is Sprint's feature of interoperability with Nextel. This may be the only real difference between the two, but who's to say if this is only a minor technicality. It looks as if Qualcomm is looking for another revenue stream and what better way to do this than offer their successful PTT software to more than one carrier (albeit with minor tweaking in name, for example). I wouldn't be surprised to see Alltel get into the mix on this. I bet Telus and Bell Mobility in Canada might come on board too. Especially Telus since they operate multiple networks like Sprint. What a perfect way for them to integrate their regular service with MIKE PTT. Since Qualcomm's QChat/BREWChat is CDMA only, it won't be available to AT&T or T-Mobile. AT&T's stuck with Kodiak. Who knows with T-Mobile.
All this talk about different PTT systems makes me so depressed. PTT is such a great feature but the carriers will continue to not see much growth with it until there is interoperability between the major players. This nonsense reminds me of text messaging back before you could send messages between carriers. If I remember correctly, texting became popular in the US for after 1. American Idol & Cingular 2. The ability to send sms between carriers.
I wouldn't be surprised to see this too. I agree. I hope they come to their senses and see the benefit of inter-carrier PTT. Whichever one is willing to set their ego aside is anyone's guess.
remember though that QChat wouldnt work because it's CDMA only.......BREWChat would only work on Verizon.......Kodiak is the only option right now and it wont live up to the expectations that Direct Connect has left everyone with
It would be nice if Alltel and/or USCellular picked up BREWChat (or some facsimile thereof) and help make the PTT option as standard as text messages, cameras, and the like. This might be wishful thinking, though.
this is just like texting back in the day when it was intrcarrier or certain carriers could only text certain others...... until its interoperable.....it wont take off because PTT is a voice feature and people want to use it to talk to everyone
It doesn't mean it has to take a decade for PTT interoperability to happen. Things are moving too fast in Wireless these days. It would be in their best interest to do it soon.
yeah......things are moving so fast that the companies are tripping over themselves......funny really
