We used to have an E300 for a while. We also drove a 500 SL and a S500...both pretty nice cars.

Was that when you used to live in Germany?

When I went to Germany with my family (flew into Frankfurt), I couldn't believe how many Mercedes I saw. Mercedes trucks, cars, etc. etc. ;)

Yup, that's when we used to live over there.

The general public, though, doesn't drive trucks, the way Americans drive them. I had friends from Germany come over and they freaked out that I had a 'truck' at home lol.

Yep. I noticed when I was there in 1999 with my family. The trucks I was referring to where for companies. I should have said that. :O

Yeah, that's what I figured. Gas is way to pricy over there for any normal person to drive around a truck or big SUV. It's even getty pricy over here ;)

    Yeah that's true.

Gas prices are still pretty high around here. Which reminds me. I will start up another thread for gas prices right now. ;)

And it's going to continue going up. I remember when we moved here a few years ago, it was easy to find a gas station that was less than $1 per gallon. Now it's hard to find one that's under $2.20.

Yup, gas prices are between €1.10 and €1.23. IIRC, it's €1.10 for regular unleaded and €1.23 for super unleaded (Super Benzin bleifrei). 1 US gallon is 3.7 liters http://www.thetipsbank.com/convert.htm.

There are some Germans who do buy gas-guzzling SUVs. I've seen a large number of Ford Explorers (Ford Germany is based in Cologne as is Toyota) and Chevy Tahoes on the roads.

Ford Explorers and Chevy Tahoes in Germany? We went through some narrow roads in Germany and France and saw all the narrow spots for parking cars. How can someone park a car that big in Europe?

Wow, this must have changed within the last couple of years, because when I lived there, there were almost no SUVs on the roads. That's great, but with those gas prices, I don't think many people will get SUVs.

Yup, this has only occurred within the last 2 years. In terms of parking in narrow spaces, European driving schools teach you how to park in the tightest of spaces.

    Cool.

Did you go to a European driving school ShoresGuy?

I went to a driving school for me since I only got to drive my high school's car twice.

That is true, but there are tons of places where you'd be SOL trying to park a big SUV like so many people drive here in the States.

Nope, I did my driving lessons in the US to get my CA license. You can use an US state-issued DL for 6 months after arriving in Germany from outside the country. After that you have to transfer your foreign license to a German license. This happens through a translation of the existing DL into German or with the person getting a regular German license (which is the expensive route of course).

A few US states signed an simplified DL test agreement with Germany to allow US residents to transfer their US licenses without taking the Germany theoretical or practical driving tests or with having to retake one of the two (varies by state).

The US Embassy in Berlin has also provided extensive info in English:

    http://berlin.usembassy.gov/germany/services/drivers_license.html

    Current as of 1.1.2001:

States who have not signed this agreement: Alaska, California, Georgia, Hawaii, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, Texas, Vermont, Washington, American Samoa, Guam, Virgin Islands.

States whose licenses are subject to retaking either the practical or theoretical German test portions: Connecticut (Class D,1,2), District of Columbia (D), Florida (E), Idaho (D), Mississippi (operator; R), Missouri (F), Nebraska (O), North Carolina (C), Oregon (C), Tennessee (D).

States exempt from having to retake the German DL test:
Alabama (D), Arizona (D,2), Arkansas (D), Colorado (C,R), Delaware (D), Illinois (D), Kansas (C), Kentucky (D), Louisiana (E), Massachusetts (D), Michigan (operator), New Mexico (D), Pennsylvania (C), Puerto Rico (3), South Carolina (D), South Dakota (1,2), Utah (D), Virginia (NONE,M (as long as it is not listed with a Code 6)), West Virginia (E), Wisconsin (D), Wyoming (C).
