I walked into a Verizon store yesterday... walked up to the customer service desk and asked matter of factly when PTT would be starting... the woman looked at me puzzled.. then said... huh... how did you know about that? i said... i did a little research... and she replied that yes it was coming soon.... and laughed... and then I said July 1st? and again she giggled and said yup... I asked if it was working well and was any good and she replied that she hadn't gotten to try it yet.... And Finally I asked about phones, and she said as far as she knew just the v66 at launch but possibly there may be software upgrade to certain phones but that was a BIG unknown... So thats the info I got...... We'll see....
motorola v66 is a GSM only phone. an upcoming motorola 60 will have PTT, but it is slated for 4Q. smasung will most likely beat them to the feature. motorola v66i
That was my bad... I'm sure that I got the phone model wrong... but I thought it was a Motorola... could be wrong....
Serves correct...just visited the Verizon Store in East Brunswick NJ, and the Senior Rep mention they will begin training next week for the employees..he did not give a July 1st date..but u can infer it will be released very soon..I think Verizon will introduce PTT and Picture messaging all in the same time frame..let the competition begin...
Remember guys, you can't call it PTT anymore unless its Nextel, check out Howard Forums, Nextel just patented the phrase "Push To Talk". I'm not joking either, this is a patent that will hold for 2 to 3 years at minimum. Verizon better start looking for another phrase to call it.
How about "Press to Talk"? Jesus, soon we will not even be able to talk with phrases, if we say Pepsi, we will have to pay a 5 cent fee or something. It is getting rediculous. Spike Lee sued TNN/Spike TV and won the frist round saying they stole his name (UMM Spike in volleyball you dumb-a$$), OK, well if somebody wanted an Average Joe TV....Average Joe wouldn't win that lawsuit.
ummm, same thing buddy.....check thier website, their fancy name is Direct Connect but the service is classified as a Push To Talk operation.
Sorry but I must interject here. Nextel has push to talk. They call it Direct Connect. I don't know why people are posting that they coined "push to talk" or have some kind of trademark or patent on it. I have been using push to talk longer than some people have been alive. Ham radio, public radio, and all types of other communications use it. If you do a seach on the net you will find many other companies selling "push to talk" type devices. Push to talk is a standard name like "bar". You can copyright "Mike's Bar" but not just "Bar". The same goes for push to talk. Another example, you cannot copyright the "on/off" button of anything. I'm not a lawyer, but there is a term for certain words like that. Otherwise, I'd have the whole English dictionary copyrighted and yall'd be payin muh billz. So, this is why Nextel calls it "Direct Connect"--well it's one of the reasons. Therefore, Verizon and Nextel can both call it push to talk, but Verizon will undoubtedly call it something else.
You can't patent a phrase. "Patents fall into four general types: (1) Utility patents, usually referred to as "patents" without any further qualification, (2) Design patents which cover the ornamental appearance of various products, (3) Plant patents which cover asexually reproduced varieties of plants, e.g. hybrid roses, fruit trees bearing new types of fruit, etc., and (4) Semiconductor chip masks which are not called patents but are handled by the Patent and Trademark Office. For the grant of an ordinary, or utility patent, the invention must fall into one of four statutory classes of invention, which are (1) a process, (2) machine, (3) article of manufacture, (4) composition of matter, or (5) an improvement on an existing invention in one of those classes of invention. A valid patent secures the right to its owner to exclude others from making, using, or selling the claimed invention in the United States and its territories and possessions for a limited period of time. " (taken from http://www.patentstuff.com/patentproc.htm) I think you mean they tried to copyright the phrase. You can't simply copyright something that has been in the public domain for so long as the phrase "push to talk". I have an old microphone at home that must be at least 20 years old, and the button is labelled "push to talk". If they did copyright or trademark that phrase, I am certain it would be wholly unenforceable. Now the abbreviation PTT is another story... It can be copyrighted much like the string "GTX" is a copyrighted trademark of Castrol Motor Oil. When Bombardier wanted to name one of their SeaDoo models "GTX" they had to negotiate with and pay Castrol for that right.
Rightly said! Thank you for clearing up my jargon. Ya see how wonder ful that ol' internet can be, folks? So now that we've got that sillyness out da way.....we can get back to subject. Anyone got new info? Hoy es el diez y siete de junio. 14 days 'til PTT. "I WANT MY PTT!"--copyright 2003---j.k. lol---eat your nads out MTV!
I'm an employee in the south area... NOTHING about PTT has been mentioned thus far. No training sessions etc. Hell last I heard the camera phones were to be out on the 16th? It's the 17th and nothing. I have however seen PTT as a feature code in the billing system.
verizon's launch dates tend to get pushed back, thats why i think no one has set in stone when they will release it. ive been through PTT training and they did say a date though, lets see if it launches. i will squeak a bit of info, v60p 2yr agreement = 199.99 w/50 mail in rebate brings to 149.99.
I Just cancelled ATT and signed up with Verizon in NYC. I got an Audiovox CDM 9500 ($49.95) and LG VX2000 ($29.95). I couldn't get the web site to work, so the telephone rep gave me the Internet promotions. We freely discussed PTT and he estimates implementation in early August, and that current users will be able to upgrade their phones(not sure of the discount or pricing) to the service. Apparently the CDM9500 was taken down off the website and the Telephone CR's screens last week, but they must have found some more, because it was back on the website this morning and he put in the order and it was accepted. I noticed he wasn't too forthcoming and only answered specific questions, especially about promotions, so I recommend you to ask away and do as much research as possible. Much thanks to the forum users for their informative posts and AnthroMatt who took the time to answer my specific question. I couldn't have done it without you! Jef
Let me clarify about my statement "upgrade phones to the service". As I understand from my conversation, there will be 2 new phones, and one will not be able to upgrade to PTT via software on existing phones. Now if some of you come up with a go-around, that will be awesome!
