    Hi everyone,

I am writing about problems with 2 Nokia 3285 phones in Concord, California and Verizon Wireless Service. both my roomate and I have been fighting with Verizon for extremly poor coverage performance and significantly high dropped calls. We have been told just about everything in the book and none of them have been very honest. I am investigating to see if it is possible to activate a Nokia 6160 on the Verizon network as a friend told me that they were doing this at his work due to some problems with AT&T. I would like to do this as the 6160 was a very good phone for me on the at&t network and would like to see if it can perform better on Verizon. I know that Verizon is CDMA and AT&T is TDMA, so is this possible? I am at about at whitts end with this problem and Verizon is not being a whole lot of help after 6 months of arguing. Thanks for any help or advice that can be given.

No, I am sorry, but as you state, the 6160 is a TDMA phone. Verizon works on CDMA. The only way the phone might possibly even use a Verizon tower would be in analog mode.

I didn't quite follow your points about problems with ATT and Verizon. Living in Tracy and working all over the Bay Area, I know that both Verizon and ATT have excellent coverage. (ATT has a few small dead pockets on 680 between 24 and 580. Verizon has billing issues. These are the only problems I am aware of.)

As to your friend activating a 6160 (formerly on ATT) on Verizon, I think he/she is confused. By the way, Nokia CDMA phones have historically been a bad technology. Nokia has revamp their CDMA offerings, but the 3285's are not the result of the revamp. Those machines are entry-level phones and considered poor quality. Before dumping Verizon, try a different phone.

The At&problems were a result of a corp. decision and not service related, I had AT&T formerly myself and was much happier. I know the 3285 is entry level but being I have over a $1000 in accessories for this form factor it is a hard pill to swallow to chang ephones. Also my business partner has the new motorola and has the same troubles as I do. I have the same dead spots at 580/24 and also most fo the Concord area. My Friend is a Network Engineer who leads his network and communications he is positive that they did this change over and have had good success but Verizon will not discuss it as though it is possible but they don't want you to know...

Again, the only possible way to use a 6160 on a CDMA network would be in analog mode. I work as a PC and server support person and with regards to wireless phones, have more than average knowledge. I do not claim to be deeply technical in knowledge, but I understand enough to speak fairly confidently. I would ask your friend to see the phone. Look at the model number. Call 611 and ask them what they show as to the phone being used. (Actually, Verizon now uses an 800# and not 611.) I think you'll find that the truth of matter is something very different than what your friend is leading you to believe. (I am not suggesting he/she is being deceptive or manipulative. Only that the "whole" story is something much different than what you are hearing.)

P.S. Remove the battery and get the serial number off the back of the phone. Give that to Verizon and see what they say their database shows for that phone.

I haven't used Verizon in Concord, but I used to live in Pittsburg so I have to help you out! I now am in Denver and I started Verizon with the 3285. I found the signal not that great and decided to switch to the Motorola 120c handset. The signal strength meter was great when I got this phone. After five months I have actually never dropped a call but the signal strength seems to have lowered some in my house and the signal is not always clear. One thing that I was told though, is that Verizon is willing to upgrade your handset when you have completed nearly a year of service. (I started a two year contract in January and the guy at the retail store told me that I could get a discount on an upgrade sometime in November.) In the meantime, try to set the network setting on "home area" instead of automatic . I believe this should be menu 5. Also, just keep trying. The least they should do is a warranty replacement. You may want to try calling Nokia directly as they tend to be better trained on technical aspects of the handset. Overall, though, I think Kevin is right, Nokia's just do not seem to work as well on CDMA networks. Also, try the retail stores. Face to face "combat" will sometimes get you farther then calling customer service. I'm sure there must be a store in or around Sun Valley Mall.

Last thing: the customer service portion of the VerizonWireless website should have a link to the corporate office. Chances are they may be more helpful than any others. When you write to them, be specific and detailed about what you have had to go through.

I know kevin said this before but the cdma phones with the qualcomm chips seem to work the best.

You may get a better batch of software head to a store and have it updated that would cease to correct the problem!!

Thanks guys but have already been through all of that this is the 3rd new phone, tried updates at home and at verizon. I have been on tech support with verizon over and over. I am hesitant to change the phone because as I stated before that would render $1000 worth of accessories useless. I feel like verizon should step up to the plate if indeed the Nokia is not going to work well on their network, everyone said they test for the best phones well I think that is a mis-statement. Thanks though for the advice.

It seems odd that your phone would have this many problems according to the lists put out by the Nokia compound that the 3285 suceed the faulty 5185i software set from the Open 4.0 version more updated Email Nokia and see. Sorry so many problems
