Apparently it's important to update your phone's Preferred Roaming List periodically. I've had the same phone for over a year and recently was starting to have signal glitches (such as roaming to analog--even to a signal of a carrier that wouldn't even recognize my phone, and discovering incoming calls that had gone directly to voice mail) in areas I'd never had problems in before (such as my residence and home neighborhood). I was becoming very annoyed until a Tech Support rep told me I had an old PRL and should try updating my phone (by calling *228, with Verizon). It worked! The new PRL let my phone recognize new towers, roaming aggreements and other network enhancements. My only question is, why isn't this done automatically somehow?!
I do know that you have to do it from your home calling area, and with a digital signal. Maybe that's the problem? If not, I guess you could call 611 and ask about it. They might tell you to take your phone to a Verizon Wireless store for them to update it for you.
FWIW I called 611 about my inability to update PRL CS told me to press 1 six times OK scroll to Version OK write down six digit PRL version (mine is 50014 BTW) power off then on However, when I press *228 still get Activation Failed Next step is go to Verizon retail store
It fails sometimes for me time to time also. Sometimes, their PRL network may go down. Try doing it a different time of day. If it still happens, then take it in, but I've encountered it time to time and it may not be necessarily your phone.
My problem was I wasnt listening to the phone I didnt know you had to select options. I was just looking and the LCD screen and thought it was updating on its own Man im dumb
<< My problem was I wasnt listening to the phone I didnt know you had to select options. I was just looking and the LCD screen and thought it was updating on its own Man im dumb >> Are you referring to the six 1s sequence or *228 ? I didn't hear anything after six 1s and *228 still gives me Call Failed
*228 only works with Verizon Wireless service...any other service, it will say CALL FAILED because it is not a known command. On Verizon, hit *228. The recorded message will say "Thank You for calling Verizon Wireless.....this call is airtime free." There will be a pause for 2-3 seconds and then you will hear: "Press 1 to Program your Phone.....2 to update your roaming capabilites." You should never hit option 1 unless directed by the Verizon rep. You are better off taking it into the Verizon store and let them look at it. Just hit option 2....it will take 1 minute to program your phone. When programmed successfully, it will say "You phone has been program successfully....Thank You for calling Verizon Wireless." followed by 2-3 beeps. Wait for the beeps, then your phone will disconnect. You're done! If you still can't do this, take your phone in because then there is something wrong with your phone. Do you have Verizon and if so, what kind of phone do you have?
