Do any of the prepaid providers, like tracfone or virgin mobile, allow you to activate a phone that's not one of the ones they sell? as long as it's the correct band. Thanks

TracFone, Net10 and all the CDMA prepaid providers will only let you use specific phones. The GSM carriers such as cingular or T-Mobile will let you use any compatible phone.

I'm rather surprised there aren't any other GSM Prepaid providers.

    Tracfone also offers GSM service.

    P.S. So does Net 10.

So GSM prepay is offerd by Tracfone, Net 10, Cingular and Tmobile. Net10 is a registered trademark of Tracfone, BTW

It's better than Canada. There's only only one national GSM operator there with one smaller provider in the Yukon.

Bzzt! Wrong. Telus Mobility and Bell Mobility are both CDMA operators. The only national GSM operator in Canada is ROGERS. There were two independent GSM operators Rogers and Fido but since Rogers bought Fido a couple of years ago there is now only one national GSM operator. If you check GSM world you'll see that there are only two operators listed Rogers and another very small carrier up in the Yukon Territory. And my original reply said that only Rogers was the only national GSM operator. So you agreed with me!
