May I ask what the purpose of this is? I thought I knew a reasonable amount about the Bb, but I am mystified.

It's pretty much just a way to send messages quickly between BB's. The BlackBerry Messenger is pretty much a shell application that arrangtes PIN messages in a chat format.

I haven't played with the Instant Messenger application. Do the messages show up in a different list than my emails, SMS and voice mails or in the same list? (my Bb is charging right now and not handy). Thanks.

This is how the B.B messenger works, you get invited/or you invite someone by a PIN request, then once that is done you can start chatting back and fourth for free. The IM's don't show up in any of your email/sms/voicemail list at all.

Once you recieve a IM from someone your b.b will have an icon that (I can't really fully explain what it looks like, so this is kind of vague) looks somewhat like a "quote" in the same area where your B.B notifies you about a unread message or new voicemail(s).

with the new version, BB Mesenger IMs, when the BB home screen is on the messages will appear int the message folder once read they are gone. Another thing one can send attachments via BB messenger.

BB Messenger will not work without a BB data Plan as it needs to connect via the RIM BB server.

Hello and welcome to WA, do you have BB data plan through your provider? I will send you a PIM message, let me know if you get it.
