These are the apps on my G1, in addition to what came installed. All of these except K-9 Mail are in the Android Market, so I haven't included links. I've included a few comments and indicated which ones were paid, or if I upgraded to the paid version. The rest were free.

    Utilities:
ASTRO File Manager (Metago) - File manager, but also manages applications, running processes, backs up to SD card.

BistroMath - Tip calculator. You can do the same thing with any other calculator, but I like the name.

    handyCalc (mmin) - Calculator.

Power Manager Full (X-Phone Software) - Conserves battery by managing screen brightness, GPS, Wi-Fi , etc., according to current battery level and charging state. Paid App. Truly essential.

Ring Toggle (Justin Ludwig) - Quick access to the ring and vibrate settings.

Terminal Emulator (Google) - Gives you the command line interface to Android's version of Unix.

Useful Switchers Full (GameWarrior) - Quick access to many system settings. Works on Android 1.6, but apparently has not been updated for 2.0 or above. Paid App.

    Productivity
AK Notepad (Snaptic) - Simple note pad.

Astrid (weloveastrid) - Task/To Do List manager.

Cards (-) PIM (coderminus) - Information Manager with a card metaphor.

DocumentsToGo 2.0/Full (DataViz) - View/Edit Word, Excel, PowerPoint. View PDF. Paid app.

K-9 Mail (K9 Project) - POP client. Improved version of the built-in Email app. Get it at k9mail - Project Hosting on Google Code

Mobile Banking (Bank of America) - Secure access to your BoA accounts. A must-have for BoA customers.

Note Everything (SoftExperience) - Note pad with folder organization.

Note Me (Paramvir Bali) - Note pad with tag organization.

    Games
    Chess for Android (Aart Blik)

    Other Fun Apps/Widgets
Bubble (Ben Zibble) - Bubble level. Just because the iPhone has one.

    Compass (Snaptic) - A compass.

    DailyStrip (FuseTree) - Comic strips.

GPS Status 2 (Eclipsim) - Shows GPS and compass details (latitude, longitude, altitude, satellites, heading, etc.). Version 3 and later has advertising, so I have not upgraded.

Shazam (Shazam Entertainment) - Identifies song that is playing. Provides access to Amazon download.

Speed Test (Ookla) - Android version of the speedtest.net website.

Translate (Cedrik Beust) - Access to the Google translation engine.

Tricorder (Moonblink) - Shows data from the Android sensors using the graphics and sounds of the Star Trek Tricorder. Silly and fun.

Xtremelabs Speedtest (Xtreme Labs) - Another speed test.

Now that it's camping season - Google Sky will be a fun tool. It maps out the location of the stars.

Found a couple games I liked last night - and already got my husband hooked on them!

Air Control - an air traffic control game
Speed Anatomy - it gives you a body part (bone, muscle, organ, etc.) - you have to drop a pin onto the picture where it's located.

I know they make one for State Capitols - great for kids to practice. I probably need to relearn the global community - off to search if they have one...

Can we sticky this, please - so that we think about updating each other on apps we find a bit more?I've been using AppBrain to help me find apps, as well as suggest new ones, back up my old lists. I'll share what's on my "new" phone, which is not as much as on my "silent bug" phone. But I've only had it a week now.

    Thanks for the Sticky, budney!

I removed Swype today - as much as I love it. I determined that it was interfering with my pinch-zoom, which it didn't do on my buggy phone.

I installed Shapewriter and I do happen to like it (though it's not as "pretty" & doesn't have as cool a name as Swype)

    ShapeWriter Keyboard

I also got rid of Calendar Pad, and replaced it with a pretty sweet looking personal "planner" app:
    Jorte

    I have thought about it.

I'll have plenty of time to play around with my phone when I'm recovering from a tonsillectomy in 2 weeks. Not much to do except catnap & ensure that I'm drinking liquids to minimize pain.

Come to think of it, that will put me playing on the computer quite a bit more.

And I'll probably post random drive-by crap in the RZ.:D

Thanks, budney! I'm addicted to Bejeweled on FB.

    My new favorite game:

[*]Alchemy - combine 2 elements to make new elements, combine those to make even more.

    I'm trying out these two:

[*]Pocket Empires Online - like Age of Empires, Civilization

[*]BillyGoat Quiz Game - a memory/comprehension brain game

As I've only been Android about a week, I haven't downloaded much yet, but here's what I've downloaded so far, in order of most useful to least useful:

    1. Juice Defender. #1 by a mile at least. Automatically manages the data connections to conserve battery power. I went from 4-5 hours battery life to using the phone all day and still having considerable life left. Right now I'm using the free version, but I hear the paid version controls even more for more battery life.

    2. Netflix. Its nice to be able to watch a streaming movie on the phone. The video quality is amazing. I'm shocked it works this well on a phone.

    3. Facebook. The updated Facebook works a lot better than the old version I was using on Win Mobile. Love it.

    4. Barcode Scanner Great to comparison shop and find out if a sale is really that good of a deal.

    5. Flashlight. Self explanatory. uses the camera's LED flash as a flashlight. Works extremely well.

    6. Compass. A compass on the phone. Surprisingly accurate.

    7. Metal Detector. It actually works, but I don't think its sensitive enough to go looking for treasures at the beach, unless you're looking for a Buick buried under 6 inches of sand.

I would include Google Maps, but I've had problems getting it to work. The one time I did get it to work it was great, but I haven't messed with it much.

    -Jay

    Location-Based Reminder Apps

Hi all. Yeah, I tend to disappear for months on end, (kinda like Howard Hughs but not nearly as eccentric.)

I'm not sure if a software discussion belongs here (if not, feel free to delete it. No hard feelings). I'm also not sure if this subject has appeared before. I searched but didn't find it.

Ok, enough disclaimers and apologies already... Here's the main point:

Are you looking for a reminder system that is based on your current or future location? I wrote the following review on my blog...

    Location-Based Reminders

    Hope you-all enjoy. Take care.

Now that i've found this thread (thanks to Charylee), I'd like to add some apps I didn't see listed by others.

If you are a student of the Bible & like to have multiple translations available at your finger tips, you'll appreciate Bible by Life Church. I don't endorse some of their teachings, but having the Bible is great..

ColorNote has both freeform and list capabilities. Once creating a list, as you complete each item in the list, merely tap it and it will be striked out. You can color the notes for added differentiation.

ConvertPad is used to convert from one measurement to another. Length, volume and more are supported.

iFlashCards: Make your own flashcards. (I use this for bible study.) It is $4.00 USA.

MyCarLocator: Set the location before leaving your car. Stroll around town or around the park. When ready to return to your car, open app again and follow it back to your car.

ScanToPDF: Use your phone's camera to take a pic of a document. It gets auto-converted to PDF that you can then email where ever.

SocialCam: Take videos and share them on this apps servers.

    Samsung Galaxy S8+
    Wireless Provider(s):
    VZW, AT&T based Tracfone, T-Mobile
Here are the apps I use on my RAZR MAXX and/or LG Spectrum:

PowerAMP Pricey, but I use it as my go to music player. plenty of customization IMO
TuneIn Radio I have the paid version of the app, I use it to stream non local stations
SoundHound+ I have the paid app, and it is a pretty nice Song ID app
Youtube Watching videos rock on ICS!!!!! Not fond of the widget, though
    CNN My preferred news app
    WCTV My local news app
MLB at Bat I use it to stream Braves games on the go; Paid is the only way to go for this, IMO
HD Widgets I use it for some switches and for a clock widget
The Weather Channel A good weather app... decent features included for $0
    YouVersion My Bible app
Chrome I am not too fond of the browser on the phone. I will likely uninstall and use the improved stock browser or use the Dolphin Browser.
FlipBoard I LOVED this on my iPad, it is good on Android :)
Twitter, Facebook, TweetDeck, Instagram are my go to social apps.
GetGlue and Turntable get some use but I prefer visiting these on a PC
Color is ok for a random broadcast (<= 60 seconds). Video quality is choppy at best... Photos can be shared as well.
Tapatalk is good for posting on forum sites.
    Any.do is a task/reminder service with a nice interface... I love it.
Pocket (FKA Read it Later) is used to save sites for later viewing.
Dropbox, a cloud storage service (puny allowances, but manageable)
Speedtest, I gotta know how fast my LTE is ;)
    DroidLight, flashlight made by Motorola
Smart Actions, set it and forget it settings app designed for RAZR devices
Gesture Search a Google App in which you swipe letters to search for content on the phone
Xfinity TV I am always misplacing the remote, I just change the channel via this app
My Verizon Gotta keep tabs on Verizon :)

The Yahoo mail app for Android works well, with the exception of the ad banner on the bottom. A paid version would be nice. It's a shame that Android does not support Yahoo mail. Thanks Dmitry
