I am pretty familiar with the actual process but, I have a question for you all. Is it a rule that when a port process in completed the account with the carrier that you are leaving is closed at that time? I know carriers usually do it that way but, it seems VZW quietly changed their ToS to say that if you port out your number in the middle of the bill cycle, it gets suspended until the end of the cycle and then its closed. How I ran into this was because I had paid my monthly bill and ported out like 6 days later. So I was expecting a decent sized credit towards my final bill only to find out it wasn't there. That is when I found out about this new clause. I knew the contract terms from before and didn't realize this new part was in there. The clause is BS. Anyway, I attempted to contact VZW about it and was rebuffed twice. I couldn't comprehend how a VZW can require a customer pay for service when there is no active service. I was seeing red and then immediately filed a complaint with the BBB, FCC and the Washington State AG's Office. Needless to say, VZW backed off. I am still wondering how in the world the can make it a obligation to pay for service when you ported out and are using service with another carrier. If I got stuck paying that part, I would've paid for service with two carriers when I only had service with one. Crazy....
That is the way Verizon has been doing it for some time now. I ported out my number to another carrier over a year ago. Verizon did allow the number to be ported out, but they also sent me final bill, which included charges until the end of the billing cycle that I was in. Once paid, I received a confirmation letter of a zero balance, and that my account was closed.... BlackBerry9000/4.6.0.297 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/102
AT&T and Verizon are very adamant about a closing bill ending when the cycle does, avoiding any need to prorate. Sometimes you can get them to close it earlier, most times not. I've had mixed results myself.
I ported from Verizon a few months ago and definitely got a credit check. However, my situation was a little different. I first ported my wife's number because I was waiting to hear from work on a company phone. That kept me billed at the Family Plan rate, less the $10 for her line. When I converted to the individual plan, I had credit from when I last paid at the higher rate. I then ported out a short time later.
See that is the problem I have with their idea. They are effectively trying to charge you for service you no longer have. That is just flat out wrong. Why should you pay carrier A for service from week 1 to week 3 and pay carrier B for the same time frame???? Its a money grab, its wrong. The port is supposed to close out the account at the time of porting. It needs to be stopped.
I do not disagree with you here at all. This seems to be the norm with a lot of the other carriers as well. BlackBerry9000/4.6.0.297 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/102
