    Okay.

I'm from Dallas, TX. I've been having a prepaid phone from Tracfone (for the Dallas area).

My brother lives in NY, he's with AT&T. He's out of contract now. (He's in an individual plan right now).
This is what I want to do :

He'll add a new line (1 year contract & no instrument required - Will be using an unlocked phone) for me - and we'll get enrolled in a family plan. Billing for AT&T is in his name.

Now I'd like my number (tracfone - Dallas area num) to be ported, but the CSR over the phone says this isn't possible because they're in diff states. Isn't this possible?

EDIT: Oh, and by the way, when I was on the phone with the AT&T CSR, he said in the system, my tracfone num was being enlisted as in the AT&T network, I told him maybe Tracfone gets services from AT&T in my area. Would that pose a problem?

It won't happen. AT&T requires all phone numbers on a family plan to be in the same market. I tried to add my uncle (in Florida) on my family plan. I was told he had to choose either a 540 or 703 area code. He could not have a Florida area code on my account.

Thanks for the reply. Guess I'm just plain-unlucky.

    Thanks again for clarifying.

Unfortunately AT&T has yet to offer this. Not sure why? The different markets on one account ability has been available on Verizon for some time (a friend of mine has a Utah and Hawaii number on the same account and lives in Oregon to boot).

I don't believe T-Mobile or Sprint offer this either, but I could be wrong...

T-Mobile also allows different area codes to be on the same family pooling plan. I know that AT&T will allow different area codes to be on a business pooling plan.

When I first read your reply, I thought you were talking about markets until I saw efparri's clarification. I don't think T-Mobile allows different market numbers on the same account, but you're right, you can have numbers in different area codes within the same market on the same account. This is something all carriers do.

It is not an area code thing with AT&T. It is combining telephone numbers from diferent markets on the same FamilyTalk personal account.

Exactly. Since my account is based in the DC market, I am limited to DC market area codes (540, 703, 301, 202) (and various overlay area codes - I just can't keep track of those anymore)

Tell me about it! Try living in a greater metropolitan area/market with 17 area codes!!!

    In the L.A. area, we get to chose from 213, 310/424, 323, 562, 626, 661, 714/657, 760/442, 805, 818/747, 909, 949, and 951...:loony:

truth be it known you CAN have different markets on the same family plan... it can be done... it will take a supervisor and a threat to cancel... but it can be done...both the rep and the supervisor will try to dissuade that action

While you probably can't keep your number, you could probably use Google Voice to get a number with a Dallas Area Code and have it ring your phone with the NY number. Since GV lets you pick your number, you can even try to get one similar to your current number (i.e. last 4 numbers the same).
