When determining if I can port my number to another carrier, does the carrier need a store in your local area or just a license? The wireless advisor site shows many carriers that have a license for my area, but most of them do not have stores in my town. I'm with carolina west, a local carrier right now, but am considering alltel and verizon when my contract is up. They both have a license, but no stores. thanks.

I would honestly go to the websites and put in your zip code there and see where the nearest store is to you. Most of them have a store locator on the front page if not find the 800 numbers of them and call and they can help that way as well.

or use the website to buy service. Entering a zip code doesn't obligate you into making a purchase, its used to ensure that they have service in the area in question. The carriers' sites will not sell you service if they don't have service there. In rural parts of the country, stores are few and far between. Third party resellers may be available, though
