I have been having a lot of issues with my phones but I'm not eligible for an upgrade yet. I've checked and it will cost me $120 to break my contract which is cheaper than it would be to get 2 new phones with out the discount. I've been a cingular customer for years. Is there a chance that if I threaten to break the contract they will go ahead and upgrade me for free?

Most likely not, also if you break the contract you're not eligible for discount prices for I believe 6 months to a year. Your best bet is to wait it out, go get two cheapie prepaid phones and change out the sims, that should last you until you get eligible to upgrade.

Where can I get a cheap phone? My thought process was that it would cost me a bout $100 to get a new phone. My wife's phone doesn't work well either but we can live with that for a couple months if I can get mine up and going.

You can get a GoPhone either online from Cingular or at stores like WalMart, Target, etc. If you get it online from Cingular, make sure you "activate" (use the included PIN), otherwise they'll try to charge you the "full" price of the phone. The GoPhones can be typically had for $30 at the low end.

Call 611 and select the option in the automated system to cancel your service. Tell the Retention rep that you talk to that you're wanting to cancel the account because [insert carrier] is offering you [insert phone] for [insert price] and if you have been with the company for years like you claim, they'll do a standard upgrade for you right now.

If you aren't a high-revenue customer customer they may call your bluff and cancel the account, so just wait and make sure they offer to do the standard discount.

Not a bluff. I would cancell now but I'm not sure I would be able to port my number to my new provider if I cancel before I activate my new service.
I'm just waiting on Best Buy to get in the phones I want. I guess I'm not a high revenue customer. Cingualr offered me the standard upgrade at the local store but it's cheaper for me to break the contract than accept that deal. I have 6 mos left on the contract and it will cost $120 to break it. I need 2 phones. So I can buy 2 phones at the upgrade price or change providers and pay $70 for 2 new phones. The service is a little higher but I'm hoping the covereage will be a little better.

I should mention, that the $120 ETF is per line, so since you're running 2 lines you would be charge $240. At least if I'm not mistaken.

Yes don't cancel before porting or you will loose your numbers, when you port your number, that automatically cancels your account & you will get your final bill & if applicable the EFT in the mail or online if that's how you pay.

I called Cingular and they verified that it was $120 total. I guess because we only have 6 mos left on our contract. Surprisingly they offered to upgrade me for free. I think we have made the decision to move any way because of bad coverage in some areas. Nice of them to offer though.

That's good to hear, usually the ETF is per line not per contract. At least that's how I know for a fact it is with verizon.

    to add....

Prior to 2/5/06, the ETF was based on the customer's market. Customers who do not activate additional lines or accept a contract renewal will continue to follow the terms of the existing contract

Effective 2/5/06, the ETF is a flat fee of $175 for each line of service across all Cingular markets. The standardized ETF will be in effect for customers who activate service or accept a contract renewal on or after 2/5/06

In the event the customer cancels service prior to the end of the agreed term, the ETF will be determined by the terms of the existing contract.

Makes sense now. One rep I talked to told me it was $175 per line but the next one told me it would be $120 total. To reps quoted me the $120 figure. I signed my contract in December 05. I cancelled yesterday and moved to verizon. Now if I can just figure out how to use the phone.

Hello everyone ... I would like to upgrade to the Blackberry 8300. My problem is that I'm stuck in a contract until next year and it cost too much right now. Is there anyway of getting around this?

I'm not as knowledgeable as the regular posters but in from what I just experienced I would say no. Short of breaking the contract you are likely stuck. You might qualify for some sort of upgrade but it won't be cheap.

The only 2 ways I know of is 1 getting someone else to take over the phone & contract or 2 die & send them the death certificate.

You forgot: be kidnapped by space aliens and send photo's from mars.

Actually, to the blackberry question, you can buy an unlocked or used Cingular/AT&T blackberry or even one from a Corp. Store, however, you will likely be paying full price

    Price $399.99
    2-yr Contract Price $249.99
    Mail-in Rebate - $50.00

    *Online Price $199.99

    *2 yr contract-New service price

that's the blackberry pearl from AT&T, you'll see there's a $150 subsidy on the phone with a 2 year contract.

Used and/or Unlocked I'm seeing prices from $180 to $300 on eBay. Please note: gsm carriers could care less what phone you use, provided the phone is actually unlocked, you can easily take your sim card out of your current phone and place it in your next gsm phone.

But will that get him out of his contract or just suspend it?

Oh and for death, they don't require death certificate. And for military they don't even require orders to be faxed in. Too many people's accounts were getting jacked up because they'd fax in the orders but their account would never be put in military suspension. So now it's just a form
