Avian's Tero Kuittinen comments on Palm following discussions with operator sources that indicate Palm is getting near to debuting Centro at AT&T and after that (somewhat surprisingly) T-Mobile.

Centro's success at Sprint has caught the attention of rival operators and the 3-month exclusivity period is drawing to an end. The firm is unsure about the prospects of a Verizon launch of Centro - the Verizon relationship of Palm may be under some stress after the 4Q launch delay of Treo. In discussion with the Palm CFO, he naturally declined to discuss specific operator deals, but giggled a little when asked about T-Mobile. Centro demand at Sprint continues running above expectations of both Sprint and Palm.

This may be and I to have used it and loved it........but to sell more of something you have to change it to appeal to more people.

I thought Palm ditched their OS in favor of WM?

Palm OS > Windows Mobile. If I had the money, I would pick up something like the TX or another E2. Those devices are great and overall rock solid. My only gripe is that you have to buy third party applications to make it look pretty. Nothing drastic, something like Font Smoother and Palm Revolt.

I thought it was the other way around... It looks like they are using their own OS more:confused: Perhaps I am missing something?

I thought Nokia and Palm were suppose to collaborate together? A symbian Palm would be sweet. I have a WM 6 device and I have to warm boot it all the time which gets old.

I wish Nokia would make a decent all in wonder smarte phone with touch screen, camera and all the other bells and whistles.

I tried out a Treo with Windows Mobile installed and it just did not feel right. It was like going to boot up a Nintendo Wii and seeing a Sony logo.

LOL, I use on of of those my Treo 750. I never thought of it that way but now that you mention it.

    So have I. :)

I started with the Palm Pilot 1000, back in 1996, when they were a part of US Robotics.
I then graduated to the Palm IIIxe, and then to Palm Vx.

Then I got lured by the IPAQ series in 2004, and went to the2215 & then to the hx2415, both with WM 2003SE. Then it was just a small step to WM PDAPhones, which were all WM5.

Now I am happily back to the Treo 750 upgraded to WM6 and loving every minute of it.

The Palm OS vs WM is a continuous debate, I am just too used to WM & all it quirks at this point, to go back to Palm OS & all it's quirks. :)

It's all a matter of preference. Windows Mobile will have the overall larger footprint because people grew up with or have more relevant experience with the Windows platform than say Palm OS 4.1. Throw up a PDA and most will call it a Palm Pilot. Whip out a phone with PIM capabilities and they will say it's a Treo.

All the while, under the hood it is running off of a variant of Windows...

It's like iPods and Treos, and how all mp3 players and DVR's are lumped into those monikers.

The Palm OS is a bit quirky, as is any OS really. In the mobile front, the Palm OS has more or less began to show its age. 3rd party applications help by making the devices more flexible and user friendly, but one can't help but get the feeling like they are using the exact same device they started off with back in the 90's, only more shiny.

I started off with a Pilot after I graduated high school in '99 and moved to the m series, eventually going with a Clie for a while and back to Palm again. The best device I ever owned was a T E|2, and I wish I never had to sell the thing but I ran low on funds and was having way too much fun with the device. [Skinning it, buying new programs, watching movies, etc]

It started to take away from my wallet as much as it did from my free time. I went truly back to basics with a Z22 but it died after my one year old got a hold of it. I upgraded to a Zire 31 [an SD slot is so important nowadays] but after a while of using AirSet I realized my phone was a better PIM device than the Zire 31.

I would personally go with a Palm-OS based smartphone if I had the money - I really like the form factor of the Centro but no formal announcement of a VZW verison has been made. [T-Mobile of all carriers will get one now]

For people I know that have Palms, they love them. I agree it's a matter of preference. I'm not a fan of Blackberry's OS, but there are millions of people out there who can't live without it. So Palm must be doing something right with their OS to keep people coming back.

I haven't dipped into the Palm pool yet, but someday I might...:)

If you decide to go Palm, the T|X is an excellent choice. It's probably one of the best devices they came out with. I'm more versed in the E|2, however.

Good to know, leafsfan81. What about their PDA phones? Is there one you prefer?

The one thing that I really want to know is:

When will they release a new OS for their devices? I would hold off any purchase until then, as it may be the one thing that finally brings them back into the market as a major player or forces them to fold.

The one device that I've liked is the Palm Centro. I didn't think the keyboard was that small, I just wish it was in Verizon's offering pool at this point.

Actually Charlyee, it was regarding the Palm OS versions. I have Windows Mobile on a couple of phones and though I don't have any issues with them, I am curious about the ease of use with Palm's OS. Thanks for the link though. :)

That's what I thought but wanted to put a plug in for my Treo anyway. :D.

The Centro supposedly is coming to at&t & T-Mobile so that could be your device. ;)
