So after thinking about it for a while, I ordered a Moto X(2nd gen) for Republic Wireless. I've really needed a new phone but just kept putting it off. The longer you wait, the more new ones keep coming out...amiright? I've also been thinking I'd like to give Republic Wireless a try. In case anybody doesn't know, their service is primarily through wifi and backed up by Sprint if no wifi is available. I've wanted to try it because my cable company, Optimum, has the area very well covered with hotspots (including the one at home). Also, I've had Sprint before which was fine in my area back then and I'm sure only better now. Since I've been considering Republic, I jumped on the $50 off on Moto X sale they just had. I used the Motomaker site to customize one with: Engrave - JFB Memory - 32 GB Back - Walnut Finish Front - Black Trim - Metallic Green Total with tax was $454.74. I didn't have to pick a plan yet. They have no contract, plans from $5(wifi only) to $40(4G) monthly and you can change your plan 2 times per month. The phone is paid for up front and unlocked, so I'll be free to try other options if I feel like it. I ordered on 12/10 and it should be delivered by 12/19. I'll follow up on the set-up details.
Sweet! Post some pics when you get it. I know I'm loving my Moto X 2nd gen, although mine is just the standard AT&T subsidized model.
I'm upgrading my private phone soon (my work phone is still the BlackBerry Z10, which I'm still very fond of). I was split between a 1st or 2nd gen Moto X. The 2nd gen obviously has better specs, but the 1st gen has the "pocketability" factor. Throw in the cheaper price on the 1st gen, and I'll probably end up going with that. Altho a full custom phone for under $450 is hard to beat. Give us a write up.
I'm having a little difficulty 'moving into' the new phone and getting the service configured. I don't want to speak too soon on that, so I'll take a few days to work out the kinks. I very much like the look and feel of the hardware.
How about posting a picture of the phone? I am having a little trouble visualizing the black, walnut, and metallic green combination. Good luck with working out the kinks. Sent from my iPhone 6 using Tapatalk
OK, here are some pictures. The walnut is lighter than I thought it appears in the Motomaker, which is good because I didn't want too dark and almost went with the teak. The green parts are so small and inconspicuous that it hardly matters what color they are.
Very nice! Thanks for posting the pictures. Eagerly waiting for your write up Sent from my iPhone 6 using Tapatalk
I just got a Moto X (1st gen) for "X"mas today I hadn't seen/held one in person before (they are kind of rare here in EU, shops are stacked with Apple/Samsung, hard to find anything else). I'm kind of surprised how small it is, I was expecting it to be larger for it's screen size 4.7". Actually, since the 2nd gen is only slightly larger, I think I'll trade up for the 2nd gen. Most probably a stock one, as the Moto-Maker isn't available in all countries (at least it's not here in Switzerland)
Thanks for posting the pictures Joe! Your initials on the back are a nice touch and look very organic to the overall design. Was that part of the moto-maker or a later addition?
Thanks - the initials are part of the MotoMaker customization. More text would fit. However now that I think about it, that might be a negative for resale/trade-in value.
I've just got a new Moto X 2nd gen, will do a short review soon once I have had some time with it. Initial impressions are good. Size isn't as big as I thought it would be. Held it up against a S5 and it was pretty much the same. The X is very thin tho, it slides into the pocket very easily and you don't really feel it there. But I have to get used to holding it, there isn't much to grab on to. Proximity sensor is cool, as soon as you put you hand near it, the screen goes on
Still eagerly and patiently waiting for your review. It will be great to see how yours compares to the others that have posted theirs.
There are quite a few people switching to Republic. My former co-worker in charge of the Emergency Response system is having an issue with the system being able to send text messages to those who have switched. Apparently it's almost like Republic's SMS numbers are aliased to a secondary phone number, so they don't relay properly. I wonder if that would affect the Emergency Alert messaging system as well?
There are some known issues with the way some (not all) bulk SMS senders use short codes to send out alerts and codes for 2-factor authentication. My understanding is Republic is working on that issue. One way to fix some instances is to get the underlying Sprint # that the phone uses. You then put that # in for the alert or authentication system. That solved my problem with GoDaddy. You can not reply to texts rec'd by way of that number or use it for calls.
