I am a long time Alltel customer, not currently under contract.

    I'm considering a new phone.

I intensely dislike going to the Alltel store, due to a variety of factors, primarily inconvenience.

Is it possible to review online the phones and prices currently being offered in the store?

Ideally, I would like to take care of everything online, or at a minimum have the phone ready and waiting for me at the store so that I can get in and out as fast as possible.

    Suggestions?

    Thanks,

    Jeff

There can be a considerable difference between the website price and the in store price. In addition , the website prices are generally for new customers rather than existing customers.

I tried to buy a Razr with bluetooth headset a few weeks ago and was totally frustrated with the run around I got on the phone and in the store.
There was a big difference in the website price and the in store price.

So, I'm hoping to find a way to shop for an upgrade phone, compare various models, and avoid the unpleasantness of the store.

The new customer price will likely apply to you if you renew your contract with them.

That would make sense, but unfortunately, Alltel doesn't seem to work that way.

New customers get better deals than existing customers.

That is as it should be.

My experience with the Razr was different. Website offers Razr with bluetooth headset for $99 or you can get the Razr without the headset for $79

In the store, they want to charge $99 for the phone without the Bluetooth headset.

Customer service on the phone was no help.

Huh...thought they did, have you been in to the store to try it? I know it's now what you want but I'm certain they can give you the new customer price if you are willing to renew the contract for the 2 years like a new customer would...

Yes I've tried at the store.

No they would not match the website price.

Prices were different...and both want a 2 year contract.

Back to my original question..since the website doesn't match the phones in the store, is there another way to stay informed of what the stores offer without physically going to the store?

Can you get McDonalds without going to McDonalds? Nope! If you want to know what the stores offer go to the store. If you don't like the idea of going to the store (Or a different local store) then you're stuck with what customer service offers over the telephone.

    Not talking food here...
You can shop at many retailers without going to their stores.

I wonder if customer service would be willing to discuss every single phone they offer? Somehow I think not.

There may not be a good option for me with regard to Alltel.

Alternatively, I could cancel my account, and then I become a "new customer" who can shop online...downside is I end up with different phone numbers.

For the most part, the website price is 20.00 lower than the store price when seeing the displayed price. The website, however, is maintained by a third party or authorized agent. The agent will charge a 20.00 activation or upgrade fee per phone. So really the prices are the same when you factor that in. Those fees are one way agents make money.

You can look at the phone you want online and either order it there and be subject to their shipping costs, admin fees, etc. and pay with a credit card or, you can look at the phone you want and then call customer service and upgrade and charge the amount to your bill.

Our shipping is 8.00 for overnight or 5.00 for 2-day.

Heres a tip to save a few extra pennys too.

If you call tech support to upgrade, you won't get charged sales tax. Since Tech does not normally handle upgrades, they do not have the systems to do them so they have to enter everything in billiing manually. In manual billing, there is no place for tax.

As far as calling and asking....... most reps, if your real intent is to purchase, will not get upset explaining information. I know when I was a tech rep I sure didn't. We make commission on features and accessories so I would always try to upsale and throw in a charger or something. We don't get anything for the phone sale but retail does. How unfair is that?

    Anyway, I hope this helps.

When your contract comes up for renewal, I was told I could order online or in the store three months prior to the contract date and get phones deals as if I am a new customer.

Guess I will find out September 14th

You won't be able to renew your contract online, but can go to the store or call CS.

    Jeff,
I wholeheartedly agree. Customer Service in Alltel's Whiteville, NC store is the worst of ANY business I've ever entered -- bar none. They treat people like crap because they are the ONLY Alltel store for existing customers within 40-50 miles. They CAN get away with it, so they tend to have the get in line (for two hours) or get out attitude. I would rather visit the dentist for a filling than go to that store.

Anyway, I would advise shopping online to pick the phone you want. Then, call Alltel CS and get them to handle the actual transaction. Most of the online folks are VERY helpful -- especially when they get to sell you a new phone or service. Shipping is normally pretty fast, too.

BTW, don't buy accessories from any company store. Many of those accessories are now 3rd party -- and they're expensive. Visit cellphoneshop.net (or some other online retailer) and buy extra batteries, chargers (not the cheapies) and cases. My experience with CPS.net has been excellent -- good products and great prices. Shipping is fast, too.

    I hope this helps!

3rd party accessorie stores are the best bet. The Alltel company store has always been expensive. when you could get the same item at a wal-mark for a lot less.

Be careful with accessories like charges.... if you don't get them from us and there is not a record on your account that you did, and it fries the phone... guess what... voided warranty. im guilty of buying from 3rd parties though.... just not on the razr... nope only from da store

Well I hate to say it but I paid extra at alltel for the car charger. but as for the BT, I did buy that from someone else and saved almost half. Like alltelwirelesstech said, Be carfuel of chargers and the like. Just in case they blow your phone.

I did the same as you Iron.... should not admit it but hey. I got my BT cheaper elsewhere even factoring in my discount. But the charger and extra battery I got from Alltel. Don't want to blow my phone and void the warranty.

Cases, clips, headsets, and the like, i say go whereever is cheaper. Anything electrical get from Alltel.

As long as you buy OEM chargers, batteries and wired headsets, it doesn't matter where you get your accessories. Alltel will be more expensive than other places, since comission is involved, but if you have a Nokia phone, get Nokia parts, if you have a Motorola phone, get Motorola parts. As long as you use OEM parts, you don't void the warranty.
