I guess for now I am going to stick with Verizon until the Cingular/AT&T merger is complete and I can compare networks at that point. For now though, I need a new phone that I will have to buy outright as I am not due on my present contract and I don't want to sign another. I need tri band. Around here in NYC & vacinity all digital is fine but if you look on the map, Vermont and New Hampshire are almost entirely analog and I did travel there not too long ago where my phone went into analog. My broken dead phone is the LG4400B. I was pretty happy with it until it broke. I am using my old v60i which is ok except for its habit of cutting off my voice whenever it feels like (even though the connection seems otherwise ok). My choices then are few. The A670 is all digital. The A650 is triband but has no outside display. I don't really want another v60. My choices then seem to be the V710 - new, expensive, maybe buggy, the CDM8600 - how good is this phone and how loud is the ringer, or buy another 4400B. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
I just picked up the a670, in the last year with my VX4400, I only went into analog once for a 2 mile stretch roaming in Michigan, other than that I have not gone into analog in any of my travels, so I felt it was time to go all digital. The a670 has a nice solid feel, good RF, nice screen, good volume.
I live in NH and I switched to Verizon. I have encountered no Analog as of yet. From what I understand, the chances of encountering Analog in NH are slim, but it is possible. When I am roaming on Unicel I get great digital coverage. I also know that areas around Conway and North Conway are digital as well. I can't tell you about Vermont though.
Looking at Verizon's coverage map, most of Vermont and the entire western half of New Hampshire are only analog. I don't know how up to date the maps are though but when I went to Vermont, my phone was on analog all the time. That is why I am looking tri mode at this point. I see the CDM8900 is also tri mode. How good is this phone rf wise and how loud is the ringer?
I would go with a Tri-Mode phone. As you can obviously tell, NH and Vermont have lots of mountains and valleys that create issues with reception. It has gotten much better, but I would rather get a tri-mode phone just in case. I like my VX4400.
I agree...the a670 is a solid phone...however, if triband is a need based on your needs, then this phone won't work for you... The a650 (while triband) is basically the same phone except without the front display (annoying...I agree) and the camera option... Good luck!
