It seems many people I know get their phones broken within a few weeks of getting another phone.
Just wondering (on average), how long a phone would last in your possession before you'd have to get a new one?

Me, I still have my 1st phone, for the last 1½ years, an LG AX4270.

I rarely ever HAVE to get another phone. I usually change about once per year just because something I like better comes available.

haha thats funny about the broken phone remark...

this girl i have classes with has a blackberry pearl on t-mobile that she bought about 1 or maybe 2 month ago and it looks horrible...the circular portion around the pearl is already missing and it has major road rash on the top of it.

shes already complaining of dropped calls...i dont have the heart to tell her its her own fault! hopefully she will figure that out.. and learn how to treat a phone.

I qualify for upgrades on an 18 month schedule. About once every 2 years I will buy an extra phone just because I want it, so I guess this brings my average down to maybe 13 or 14 months.

I get a new phone just about every year, but, as of lately I have had to have 3 new LG Scoops.

The reason I keep my phone a LONG time is because I've programmed it.
(NAM settings, with the easy LG program menu).
Plus I know everything about it, like the back of my hand, and I really don't ever want to give it up.
If I were to get a new phone though, it would have to be the same, or similar model (with the program menu).

Some phones can take the abuse, some can't. Most smartphones/PDAs fall into the category of treat them like they were made of glass.

Although I chose "every few months", recently it's been usually each year, but with all of the phones I've purchased since 2002, the average would be "every few months". :O

    From 1994 to 2002, I had a total of 4 phones during that time. Since 2002 I've had 30...:loony:

I probably have about 15 phones still floating around my place. Many are GSM (and unlocked), but there are a few CDMA's (all Verizon).

    Yes Houston...I have a problem...:O

Problem? What problem? That seems like normal behavior for the average WA member with over 1,000 posts.

To those of us on W.A. it's normal...But to those outside our little universe, it's an addiction.;)

That's OK. I can live with it. :browani::D

    yea i agree.

also, it is an age/maturity thing sometimes (in my opinion).

when mommy and daddy still pay for the phone, people tend to throw them around alot more than when it hits their own pocket.

If I count all phones since 07/05, then the average is one phone every six months  but I only get new Verizon phones every 8 months on average... At least I didn't pay retail for each phone!

My sister's kids learned fast. She got them nice phones, but when they lost them she bought some old Cingular Nokias in a thrift shop for $5/ea. They didn't even have color screens. When the kids qualified for upgrades again they made sure they didn't loose them again.

No average really. Once I got my first phone when I was 11, it worked for couple months, then was forced to switch as it died. Nokia 3410 served me for good two years and I was forced to buy prepaid kit in US. Got 6030 and decided to buy 5300 summer 07 and im still with it. I still use 6030 for roaming with polish prepaid sim card. next phone will be probably in one year or two years, will have symbian and we're good to go :D

It's a good thing you put in every few days/weeks into the pole, that way Gamer03 can participate too. I average about every 2 years, mainly because I pick out phones I really like and then I want to stick with them. The only exception to that was when I ditched the Moto V710 for the E815 when it first came out. That old E815 finally died about a month ago and I had to replace it, but the sad part is that I went to the VZW store and picked out the RIZR Z6 because it was the phone I disliked the least out of everything Verizon had. :pissed: I guess I've just become jaded in my old age or something, but it did seem odd getting a new phone and not being happy about it.

There are many phones and devices out there that I'd like to try and use,
SmartPhones, iPhones, EVDO, Bluetooth, etc., you name it.

My phone doesn't even have picture/video messaging, it's just a boring "cell phone."

I've never moved away from my LG AX4270, and I take great care of it as it were my own pet, LOL :D
Even though I've had it about 1½ years, it almost looks brand new....
Nevermind that I use it about 8,000 minutes per month!

I would say every six months or so, but with the way things are going in may be longer for now on. :(

I've been very happy with the Tilt, I probably won't get another phone till I qualify for another upgrade in about a year. However, 6 months after that mom & dad both qualify for upgrades. I can probably take dad's upgrade, give him the Tilt, and get another hot, new phone!

i had my AX4270 on Alltel prepaid for 19 months... Probably because I didn't feel like looking for another phone.I only talk on it for a few minutes per month and I play with the programming on it. Also I just use it to test the signal of othey carriers.

I've slowed down purchasing new phones, mostly because they're just too expensive outside of the the upgrade period.

The newest phone I have is the Voyager and that was my NE2 upgrade with Verizon. I still love getting new phones, but my wallet doesn't...

Yup I too like to check the other's signals,
and I've programmed my phone so that I can force my phone to the strongest signal available, or whatever I want :)
    (Unless it's a NEG'd SID/NID)

Is there anything different with the prepaid AX4270, like features, some things enabled/disabled, etc.?

Not from what I can tell... the PHONE features are the same as far as I can tell. There was no special packaging or anything like that. The things that are disabled appear to be billing related like call forwarding.

The easy programming came in handy when I went to Atlanta... I was able to force "Cell Only" (Verizon) because I always got a busy signal while on the Sprint network... and I have the Sprint SID blocked in my area :)

My AX4270 phone works well on Verizon & Sprint in Atlanta,
but I still prefered Verizon (cell only) most of the time off the Interstate near downtown.
Headed back up I-85 towards Greenville, SC, I put it on Sprint (PCS only) up to Lake Hartwell.

    Sprint isn't neg'd where I live
but I live with a low available Sprint signal,
So at home my phone is always either on Alltel or Verizon. (Cell only).

    Back to topic,
for now it's my 1st & only phone, and I hope the CDMA standard will continue to expand,
so I never have to get rid of it. :D

I meant that I blocked Sprint myself via the programming menu (Sprint isn't neg'd here) :)

I hope I won't dump my CDMA lines either... GSM isn't quite my cup of tea. I can't really afford to go thru anymore phones unless I pay nothing (or next to nothing) for them.

Do the LG VX3300 and/or VX8600 also have that program menu?
If they do, then those might be my next phone(s) someday in the distant future.
Unless those are exclusive Verizon phones, and not compatible with Alltel...

The VX3300 has the programming menu but only Verizon and USCellular carried that phone as far as I know. I never owned the VX8600 so I cant comment on it... however, Alltel carried the AX8600 which is probably almost identical but without the VZW stuff:)
