Hi- I recently purchased a Nokia 6340i on eBay and am waiting for it in the mail. I have been doing some retroactive research on this phone operating on my GSM plan (I realize this is an older phone with both TDMA and GSM capabilities...) and was wondering if this phone will work in the Northeast with my 64k at&t SIM card? I have not yet talked with at&t but from what I've read there is some confusion on their part as well... Does anyone have on of these phone that is successfully working on the at&t GSM network? Thanks for any help! ~S
It will operate on GSM 850 and 1900, but the TDMA and analog portions of the phone will no longer function. -Jay
i actually have one of these, and i belive jay is right. i hav,nt used it in a couple years tho. if i remember right it had to be set up by cingular in order for it to work on both digital and analog.
No need to call them anymore as they do not support the TDMA or analog functions of the phone anymore. -Jay
Hi- Thanks for the info.; I don't really care about the Analog as I get good GSM coverage on the 850/1900 bands where I live in VT. I basically purchased the phone because it as cheap, built like a tank, and was a Nokia. As long as my GSM SIM (64k) will pick up the GSM frequencies in my region (from your answer, I think it will?) I really don't care about the TDMA capabilities... ~Seth
Hi- I just looked at the SIM chip and it is an at&t 3G chip or so it is labeled. Will this matter at all. I'm assuming since at&t still uses the 850 and 1900 bands then I should be fine... Thanks, S
My Nokia 6340i worked in NYC six, seven years ago just fine. I doubt you will find anyone to program the TDMA/analog side's ESN into AT&T Mobility's account computer. My family had standardized on this model. We had a spare, and when a SIM was swapped into it, it would only operate GSM until Cingular updated the account with the matching ESN and IMSEI (?). It will work fine as a GSM only phone for you. I keep mine handy as the backup to my HTC 8925 Tilt. I keep the engineering screen on, and it's fun to watch while traveling (no backlight needed for the monochrome LCD). COtech
Sure it was GAIT, there was 850 MHz TDMA/AMPS and 1900 MHz TDMA/GSM in the same handset. I still have one also, but prefer the 6340i (with bonus 850 MHz GSM also). COtech
I thought they made 2 models of this phone. The phone was sold by a 1900 only GSM carrier, I would if they disabled the TDMA? At one time I had a TDMA phone that looked just like the 6340. I will have to see if I can find the phone, i think its on the bottom of my sons toyboy. Old Cell phones make good toys.
