    Hello all,

Hopefully you can help. We signed a 1yr agreement with At&t almost 2 1/2 years ago. After signing they switched to Cingular. We have been using the same GSM phones for this time period. My wife wants one of the new Samsung A707 (sync) and I would like to get it for her but don't know if our old AT&T sim card will work. I know I have to have the phone unlocked, but there is something about a 3G card. She will only use the phone for texting, phone calls and rarely the MP3 player. Is it necessary to obtain a new card, and if so, will Cingular authorize a "Cingular" 3G Sim for an old AT&T customer without forcing us to sign the Cingular agreement? We have a good plan and I don't want to sign a new agreement. Thanks for your help.

As long as you aren't going to be using internet I think it will operate just as a phone. You'll have to migrate to orange to get a new 3G card.

You can probably buy the phone for the full price and have Cingular give you the unlock code, but as Jay said you'll have to migrate to Orange (and that'll require signing a new agreement and switching to a current plan) if you want a 3G SIM. The old SIM will work just fine in A707 provided it's unlocked.

Thanks for the replies and info. I don't want to sign the new agreement, we have early nights and weekends and are charged only for sending texts, not receiving also. She sends hundreds of texts. I can buy the phone from Walmart for around $200 free and clear. How do I get Cingular to give me the unlock code?

    Thanks again.

You will need to contact Cingular (you can do it online as described here or call CS) and request the Subsidy unlock code. They will need the proof that you bought the phone for a full price, and even then they may choose not to give the unlock code to a Blue customer — so make sure you can return it back to Walmart.

Pardon my ignorance, but what is OLAM? Also, if cingular doesn't provide the code for free I think I can get it online for a fee, correct?

    Thanks.

OLAM is the Cingular online account management system. I don't know if you can get a Samsung A707 unlock code for free outside Cingular, but google "unlock Samsung A707" and see what you can find.
