Hello there, Here is my problem, I purchased a new unlocked Motorola Razor v3i on e-bay. I still have the blue AT&T SIM card, when I put the card in the phone it worked fine but then I noticed the roaming sign was displayed on the top of the phone. I went to a Cingular dealer and they told me I need to buy a new SIM card but it might not work since I have the old AT&T. I was then told they will give me a new SIM if i signed a 2 year contract with the new AT&T. Does anyone know if I can just have a new SIM card activated under my old plan and use the new phone? Very confused, Alex
Don't worry about the roaming indicator, that doesn't mean anything at this point. The only way to get rid of it would be to modify the phone with software & a data cable. The information on doing this can be found here: http://forums.wirelessadvisor.com/motorola/11782-jays-reference-base-modding-motorola-phones.html And if you have some tech savy, you can do it with no problem, if you don't then just learn to ignore the indicator.
Hey Jay thanks for the info, but when I spoke to AT&T they told me I was going to be charged. If thats not true I guess I have a nice new phone. thank you again!!!!!!! OH and for the tech savy that would be a negative.
If you are still under the Blue Cingular plan, and just need an older AT&T SIM card, then the ones that are sold on eBay for under $5 dollars should work out fine. http://attr-search.ebay.com/search/...action=compare&copagenum=1&coentrypage=search Once your new sim card arrives in the mail, call up Cigulars CS Dept. and give them the new sim number, they will change your account information over to that card for you. You may have to reset your phone by turning it off and back on again once the sim is activated.
Unless your on a really old Blue plan that charged for roaming outside your local coverage area, then no you will not get charged roaming. I believe most if not all regional plans were converted to National plans and they are "No roaming fee plans". Also since all Blue & Orange towers are now 1 in the same, you can't be roaming it's all 1 network now (with the exception of using T-Mobile, which you can't do in the NY area). I have seen the same indicators on my phones when I buy unbranded ones, and haven't been charged roaming yet, the people in the store are just trying to get you to migrate over & get into a contract again, for their pockets not yours.
I went into my account it shows I have a Local 400 plan with 600 additional min. AT&T wants me to switch, one of the cs reps said I will never see that amount of time for $39.99 again. I'm guessing since it is that old I probably will be charged the roaming?
If you have a Local plan, you will most likely be charged for roaming. The age of the plan doesn't really matter I have an old (almost three years) National plan where I have 400 base + 450 additional minutes for $39.99 and I'm not charged for roaming.
If you do have a local plan then you will be charged roaming when said roaming indicator appears. Since you already have an unlocked v3i you may be able to migrate, keep that equipment and only get a 1 year contract out of it. Hell, I'd even try to get insurance on the phone when that happens. Try to do it all over the phone with CS, may be a bit longer but agents in store are so prone to ph**king stuff up.
The roaming indicator appears when the phone registers on a non-Cingular network, it doesn't always mean that the person will be charged for roaming. Also, when outside home area, the person may be charged for roaming even if the roaming indicator does not appear. With local plans it's determined by what your home area is, not which tower you're on.
I believe that this information is incorrect. Several blue customers will see the roaming indicator on their phones in areas where the MCC+MNC was changed from 310-380 (former AT&T Wireless MCC+MNC) to 310-410 (new MCC+MNC for Cingular Wireless) during the integration. Blue customers that have a local calling plan will only get charged for roaming when they leave their home calling area. My girlfriend has an old GSM America local plan and has never been charged for roaming while she was in her home calling area, even though the roaming indicator has been on since the migration was completed. If the phone's roaming indicator is used to determine when a customer is roaming or not, then by definition, she would have nothing but roaming calls, which is not the case. Unlike Cingular orange customers, blue customers will actually know when they are roaming on a roaming partner's network and they still have the ability to manually select networks. If the op does make the decision to migrate, the decision should be based on facts and not scare tactics.
??? I'm orange and I have manual network selection. Also I can tell when I'm roaming - because the Cingular alpha tag appears. (blank operator logo )
OK, you have manual network selection because I disabled the CSP bit on your phone as the result you get some menus which normally would be hidden because the SIM/network doesn't support them (like call barring), manual network selection (and some other things they don't want you to be able to control) and you lose the ability to read the VM retrieval number from the SIM.
I have always had manual network selection. This was one of the primary reasons why I "suspected" from the beginnning that my phone was actually unbranded software; from seeing discussion about this out on the Cingular forums and because I had access to the manual network selection menu, even with using an orange SIM card. While it is quite possible that I am now confused , as I recall the discussion on Cingular forums at the time - the "consensus" seemed to be that not always - but "some" unbranded phones do provide access to the manual network selection even with an orange account.
On my modded phones I have no problems getting my voicemail. The only problem is when you have full manual network selection enabled the VM icon never shuts off. (and the text message from ^@ which is supposed to turn the icon off). -Jay
Flashing the phone resets that to default I don't remember what the default was, but I made sure it stayed off Jay, I wasn't talking about getting the voicemail, only about the voicemail retrieval number stored on the SIM card sorry for confusion. On Nokia phones the CSP setting determines whether the phone uses VM retrieval number from the SIM or from the phone memory it's quite possible that this does not apply to Motorola. Incidentally, I don't think that the ^@ happens on Nokias modded to full manual network selection (Although on some firmware versions the VM icon won't work either).
Yeah, my Motos will read the VM number from the card when modded, just the vm indicator is always stuck on.
