In summary, Cingular merged with AT&T - The government made Cingular sell off Oklahoma City and region to Alltel in order to not have a monopoly - Alltel tells me that I have to get new phones (without SIM cards), my insurance is cancelled, and I have to choose one of their plans this month.... My question is: Since I signed a contract with AT&T and I still have 8 months left on it, and Alltel bought my contract in effect, why should my plan change? Should they not pay me $200 for early termination? Alltel has stated that they would not charge the "early termination" fee for AT&T customers who don't renew with them. Hummm... As if they could if they wanted to (legal nightmare). But still, with AT&T, I had N&W starting at 7pm, a phone with a SIM card, phone insurance, and the text messages were only counted if you sent one. Now I have to sign a new contract with less benefits 8 months before my old AT&T contract is supposed to be up. I think that AT&T (which I,m sure Alltel has assumed liablility for) should compensate me just as I would have had to if I had elected to termininte early. I am busy researching wireless plans to see who has the cheapest text message plans since I have two daughters with combined messages of 2000 per month). An unlimited Text message plan would be nice. Is anyone else frustrated as I am? Any ideas on what wireless company to move to?
Sprint and T-Mobile offer unlimited text message packages. Sprint also offers 7 pm night start times for a additional charge. If you really want unlimited text messages and 7 pm nights I think Sprint is going to be your best choice. Sprint PCS
I have posted a reply to this issue in a related topic: http://forums.wirelessadvisor.com/showthread.php?t=8560 Alltel offers unlimited txt, 1500 txt, 750 txt. Also, Alltel has 7pm n&w min. if you switch to Alltel you will have guaranteed credit approval, plus individual equipment special offers. If you give us a chance, you'll get 15 days to try it out. Its certainly true that we don't have SIM cards.. but that's just because CDMA does not need them. There are pros/cons to that fact. Generally most contracts(i haven't read an ATT wireless one), are stated in such a way that you are under obligation to keep service active with that company.. the company generally does not have an obligation to provide you with specific service. Aka, features, plans, prices, etc may be changed at anytime. Alltel is generally VERY nice about letting customers keep certain plans, etc, however with this particular transaction, customers need to move to a new alltel plan with Alltel phone if they would like to continue with Alltel service. However you will not be forced to move by the end of august. You will have several months afterwards to make a decision. Thanks for the advice. It gives me a headache... The other thing I have to consider is that my wife and two daughters got by on a 900 minute family plan from At&t because basically 1/3 of Okla was Cing - 1/3 was At&t - 1/3 was everyone else.... So, there were a lot of free MTM minutes... Now, it appears that Cingular will have over 1/2 the state (if you take out the Alltel customers that At&t had to sell off)... If I went with Sprint or T-Mobile (and my daughters are already trying to sell me on T-Mobile) I would probably have to have a 1200-1500 minute plan... Thanks again for the reply.
Yea... We have been waiting on the "packet" that they are supposed to send. Maybe the stores know more about what they will offer. I suppose that I will end up back at Cingular because of all the free MTM minutes since they will have all my daughter's friends (since buying At&T)...
Thanks for the reply and for being so nice considering my frustrations... When it is all said and done, I will definately give Alltel a chance...
I'd prolly just choose Cingular or switch to Sprint PCS. I wouldn't even consider T-Mobile as they don't have a 7 PM night option and the coverage with T-Mobile looks to be more thin in your area than Sprint's does. My mom's neighbor traveled to Oklahoma City not too long ago and she had a Sprint PCS phone with her. She told me the coverage in that area with Sprint was very good. She was surpised how well Sprint works in that area.
Def give Alltel a shot.....Cingular does have a lot of towers and coverage but they are going through alot of growing pains with their network. They also have a lot of internal issues within the company.
NO! If you read the contract you signed and with every wireless carrier, YOU are essentially committing to service for a length of time in order to receive a discount for your phone. (An example: the "Free" phones usually average $125-$150 to buy from the manufacturer) The wireless carrier does not commit or guarantee to providing service to you. Of course, if the carrier can't provide service than you're right that they should let you out of your contract BUT they don't owe you $200! The AT&T Wireless company of OKC / Alltel is taking a loss letting you out their contract disconnect penalty free. I wouldn't complain!
Hey Mr. Alltel, I was being a bit facescious in my statement that they should pay me for early termination.... By the way, Alltel is not "letting" me out of my contract. Do you think that they would just "let" me out of the contract if it they had a legal leg to stand on. Ohhh.. by the way, I am still AT&T and not Alltel since I did not sign a contract with Alltel yet (as explained by Alltel Customer Service). So, AT&T may lose money but wait, Cingular bought them out and since I am going to go with Cingular, it's all a wash.... Alltel had similar plans but could not ultimately compete with the fact that more than half of Oklahoma will be Cingular now (all those shared free MTM minutes).
I have been extremely happy with Alltel. Y'all need to give them a shot. Cingular drops alot of calls, GSM signals don't travel as far. I know, I know...you Cingularians are all going to say you never drop a call! I believe you..but the scientific fact is that GSM signals do not travel as far! You may have more problems when you leave your local area. Try going to the mountains or real rural areas. If you don't plan on leaving the US often, give CDMa a try. It's not bad and neither is Alltel...don't be upset...It's Ok! I switched from Verizon and Cingular due to excellent coverage nationwide and more plan for your money!! i think you are pis*ed of because the choice was made for you. 1000 National minutes, unlimited M2M, unlimited mobile to home, unlimited N&W at 7:00....$57
Sprint also has unlimted mobile to mobile between Sprint and most Nextel customers and Sprint also offers n/w starting @6 of course for an additional fee.The fair and flexible for families is great no roaming charges
I'll agree that Alltel is a great carrier and all, but if the poster has more friends on Cingular then it makes perfect sense for him to go with Cingular because of all the M2M minutes. Also, there is no "scientific evidence" that GSM signals don't travel as far as CDMA signals do. Air interface has nothing to do with it; frequency does. 1900 Mhz signals don't travel as far as 800/850Mhz signals do. However, a well-built PCS network can be every bit as good as an 800Mhz network if it's done right. For what it's worth, CDMA does appear to have better error correction schemes so often it can hold a call with weaker signal than with a GSM phone. However, that has absolutely nothing to do with the distance the actual signal travels.
