They send me an email saying how "my Nextel network" has improved in Delaware. Hello, I use Sprint PCS! Thanks for rubbing in the 3-6 towers you added were all iDEN!! Including one right in my hometown (been there for about 1 year), that's really pointless IMO (good for PCS, useless for iDEN. it's 1 mile from the Verizon/SPCS/NXTL/TM tower).

Interesting. I've never known Sprint to send out any info like that. I wonder why I haven't got anything like that.

Larry, I signed up for Sprint alerts (or something like that) at sprint.com They were having a giveaway of some highend nextel or the a900, but you had to sign up for the emails. But....I'm not sure that was it though. The email was very specific to my area, with a picture of mid-Delaware in it.

I also signed up for the e-mail alerts a long time ago but oddly have never received any.

Why would Sprint be adding new Iden is the plan is to eventually convert all Iden to CDMA? This does not make any sense. I wonder if there has been a change in long-term strategy?

    Jim,

Believe it or not most new towers being built are IDEN only right now. It makes no sense. Nextel seems to still be doing their own thing apart from Sprint.

That's correct, Nextel (iDen) is building much more than Shentel (Sprint) in my region. But almost no new towers - mostly new sites without the hefty capital cost of owning a structure.

Sprint and Nextel are, and will continue to be separate systems for a while to come. Sprint-Nextel appears to be making the correct choice in deciding that both systems and labels will be profitable and appeal to different markets.

    Generally:

Sprint appeals to young, technologically savvy people who like cute little handsets and features.

Nextel appeals to good ol boys who like the big tough handsets, pick-ups and the walkie-talkie feature ... and Nascar.

    It's a red-state - blue-state issue, and Sprint/Nextel is nailing it down.

They are attacking the market from both ends. Investing more in the Nextel infrastructure makes perfect sense to me, because their network needs capacity upgrades - especially because Nextel cannot fill gaps through paper agreements with other carriers.

You are right, except the remark about the red state blue state thing, that has absolutely nothing to do with it. I know many democrats that swear by nextel and just as many republicans that swear by sprint and vice versa. They are keeping the iDen to market to cater to business customers, cdma to personal use. (in general)

Ok but here's why I disagree. Sprint themselves released several company news bulletins in January of this year that stated that Sprint was going to start co-locating CDMA on thousands of existing IDEN sites as well as new ones. This process was supposed to begin in February and continue until 2007 or longer. However there has been no effort by Sprint to do this yet. CDMA is the future and I'm surprised that they would just stall like this. Any new Nextel site approved for construction after January of this year should be a CDMA/IDEN site. But it's not happening at all.

It could just be a Nextel thing then. If so maybe Sprint will follow suit and do the same.

In my immediate region there have been 3 Nextel towers put up. Now, Sprint needs to add CDMA to them IMO. The company owns them (to my knowledge at least the one in my town is Nextel corp owned). So Sprint-Nextel is paying for it, but yet only Nextel customers get the improved coverage. The towers are mostly along the eastern edge of Delaware, and only improve weak signals in rural areas. I think they are mainly for the firemen who all use Nextel. However, whatever the reason they're there for....Sprint CDMA should be there as well.

Ugh, I don't ever want to hear blue/red state. Media invention to get us divided. Please let that die for 08!

I'm sure Nextel built the towers with enough equipment storage space to add CDMA to them in the near future. Even Nextel's older towers have plenty of space in them as the original IDEN equipment was very large and has since been scaled down. So their storage sheds are large and ready to accomodate CDMA as well.

It could be that Nextel had gotten the approval's to put up these towers prior to the merger and are finally getting around to putting them up.
Also they may be in area's Sprint is going to need, so instead of going for planning board approvals to put up a tower, they let the Nextel tower go up, then try for adding the Sprint antenna on an already exsisting tower to save cost's.
(Just a thought on why they are doing this)

Could be the case but I've witnessed at least a half dozen antenna permit approvals by Nextel that got their approvals long after the merger was complete. Those sites are being built right now without any thoughts of CDMA equipment. Hopefully you're right and they just haven't got around to the CDMA side and will do it soon.

Even though as chuikov pointed out, keeping the two as two seperate things has it's advantages, but like Larry I don't see why Sprint would not colocate on new NEXTEL sites built/placed on top of buildings if their coverage needs it. All it takes would be a little more equipment and a little more $$$.
Larry, you said that every new NEXTEL site approved after January should be CDMA/iDEN. Although I think many new sites should be CDMA/IDEN, I don't think every site should or could be since I'm sure in a lot of areas one technology already has great coverage/capacity and doesn't need the additional site.

Yep what I meant was that every new Nextel site approved after 1/1 where CDMA is also weak should be a combo site. And that's what I was led to believe when Sprint said they were going to do that back in January. But it hasn't panned out. I guess we should stop reading press releases.

Actually I do not. I think there was a link somewhere in the Account Manager area of the Sprint site.

Ok because I remember signing up for that like 2 or 3 years ago but I'm thinking maybe that one became outdated after the merger or something. I'll see if I can find it.

Hmm. The only thing I could find was an option to sign up for media relations news releases on the news section of the sprint web site. There's nothing in my account section.

I've actually been signed up twice...I get two copies of everything lol.

Oh, and I found it. It's right on the main sprint.com page. Toward the bottom (immediately above the 'send a text message' thing) there is a link to "Win a Phone" if you register for free email updates.

But if they are already spending the money to erect a new site/co-locate somewhere I don't think it would be that huge of an investment to also add CDMA if it's weak, I'd think it would be a wise investment.

Well most of these towers are in areas where iDEN coverage is moderate to strong. Don't get me wrong, I like 6/6 bars everywhere, etc. However, CDMA PCS would greatly benefit more over iDEN. This area of DE isn't that populated, capacity isn't an issue. Sprint's PCS signal is too WEAK! I live .75 miles from a tower and I barely get -99 signal outside. Sometimes though, I get -84ish. I can guarantee if there was a T-mobile panel on that tower....I'd have 100% signal. (yes, the Sprint panels face my house). I only get full Sprint signal if I can see a tower. They need to turn the juice up, or add to these Nextel sites. I'd really just settle for the juice.
