All around the NYC highways, I have seen these little things that look like cell antennas hanging from signs ( I was finally going slow enough to get a picture, Cross Bronx on a 90 degree day with no AC is fun!). They look like cell antennas, but they all point down, making me think they might be for EZpass. I have seen them on the Cross Bronx, Staten Island Expressway, Belt parkway...etc. Any ideas?
I believe they are tansponders for trucks. You see them more predominently around truckstops down south. I think it's some type of system that determines if you've passed thru a weigh station recently...
Would make sense, but there a no weigh stations in NYC at all. Also, in some places, they are only in the left lane, where trucks are not allowed.
Well, it's not E-Z Pass, 'cause they're only at the toll plazas. It could be some sort of traffic counting device...
It could be to monitor traffic speed for MetroTraffic or other systems that report traffic conditions. I could be wrong, though.
Actually, going slow on the Cross Bronx is a blessing. Normally, you don't move at all! I think the only time I drove around 70MPH on the Cross Bronx was like at 4AM on a Sunday morning..... Otherwise, the cop would've catched up with me! (joke)
That's my guess. Here in Atlanta, until very recently traffic conditions on GA the toll portion of 400 were monitored not via radar (which is used on the other freeways in Atlanta) but by reading toll transponders (Cruise Cards.) The antennas for that system are yagis, located *between* lanes in most cases. -SC
Yeah, coming back home that day, i was doing a good 80. BUT, there was STILL traffic going the other direction at about 1:30 am!
Actually, that COULD be an EZPass antenna, depending on its location - I believe the NYDOT/MTAB&T use EZPass transponders to monitor traffic in HOV lanes. Is that antenna anywhere near a traffic camera/news jamcam? It could have something to do with that...?
Well, there are no HOV laves on the cross bronx, or anywhere else I have noticed these. As for the traffic cams, i'm not sure if there are any in that section of the Cross Bronx, but there are on the statin island espressway. Traffic Cams
The Cross Bronx has 2 or 3 traffic cams. Not many. However, I've seen the same type of transponder in other highways. On I-95 on the NJ side coming towards the GWB, pay attention to the signs around there. They have the same type of antenna. I've also seen them on the GSP, Turnpike, Rt. 80, etc.
