This Old Phone? Good Enough For Me. - Bits Blog - NYTimes.com Note. This is from the NY Times. If it were from the NY Post I still would post it. It is wireless related.
Re: NYT People keeping old phones I'm one of these people sticking with my phone instead of buying a new one. This is the longest I've used the same phone since my old Samsung SCH-411 from 1999-2001 with AirTouch/Verizon. There are some great phones out there, but for me, I'd rather spend money for something I NEED, not want. I don't need a new phone right now (besides the fact I'm not eligible for the NE2 discount upgrade until November anyway).
Re: NYT People keeping old phones I'm with you on this too. I love the Voyager. It's THE best phones I've ever owned. Go fig?
Re: NYT People keeping old phones I'm keeping my old phone for now, but only because the phone I want hasn't been released yet.
Great topic to talk about. I'm also so attached to my phone and don't want anything else. Even though it's "outdated" for over two years. If my phone ever broke, then I'll just buy the same phone off Ebay (new condition or refurbed). In fact, I'm looking forward to doing this soon, because I've had my phone since I signed up with Alltel in September 2006. And I'd like the same phone again, before our market is sold, because I'm not sure if the new company (probably USCC) will activate a new "old" Alltel phone, and I'm not even sure if Verizon will let you do this, even with their "open network." My phone is an LG AX4270, and want to get another one of those very soon, so it could last me another 3 or more years from now. any advice or other places (besides Ebay) I could get the same phone in new condition, and would any other CDMA carrier let me activate an Alltel phone once Alltel dissappears?
Since getting my iPhone on July 11, 2008, I have not seriously considered any other phone. I'm very happy with it and probably will be even more so, after the firmware 3.0 comes out in June. I am quite happy to stay with the iPhone for a long time...unless they come out with a new one. I moved beyond Nokia probably forever. Interestingly, my online ATT account says I'm eligible for an iPhone discounted price on July 12, 2009! Not sure what that means, although the rumors are another hardware device will be available again this summer as it has been for the last two years. However, this time I will not get up early or stand in line for it; the3G is quite fine.
I could have upgraded, and although the FUZE looks like a cool phone, the fact that it didn't have a tilting screen, well I felt it was a downgrade. I'm still very happy with my Tilt, but if the HTC Touch Pro 2 was released I would have bought one. I guess it was just as well, because I was able to get my mom a V3xx in pink with my upgrade, before it becomes unavailable (Its already been discontinued). So I simply gave mom my upgrade, and I'll take hers when her line comes due this summer. -Jay
i'm sticking with my blackberry at least a few more months. i'm very interested in the palm pre... but i just don't feel like spending a few hundred dollars on a device that will have a couple of extra fancy features over the blackberry.
I would be happier to stick with my Storm if this damn update would come out...:browani: Seriously though, I think this is a good thing. The philosophy of the American consumer must change. People are keeping cars, clothes, phones, tv's and everything else longer. For people who CAN afford to upgrade all the time, good for them. For others, they may be better spending their hard earned cash on something else that generates a better return...
LOL, keeping things longer??? I've never replaced a vehicle with less than 190,000 miles, my TV is 10 years old, I replaced my computer last year, but the computer was 6 years old... My current vehicles: 1981 Buick, 172,000 miles. Owned 16 years 1986 Chevy truck, 190,000 miles. Owned 13 years 1998 GMC truck, 160,000 miles. Owned 6 years. Then again, I'm not normal... -Jay
Speaking of keeping things longer, when I went to Upstate NY back in February, my friend had an old Compaq computer, with an AMD K6 processor (331 MHz). It's 1997 technology using windows 95, and It's all I had for a whole month...VERY Slow. What a long time to keep a computer....lol
I wanted to keep my BlackBerry Pearl, but I was tired of paying the required data fee to Verizon. When my Annual Upgrade date came up 2 weeks ago, I decided to downgrade to a Samsung Glyde, which I am enjoying at the moment. My data use had went down considerably and I didnt care to be in touch with my webmail accounts I have had my LG AX4270 since September 2006 as an Alltel prepaid phone... I rarely use the thing and I am waiting to see when my account will be merged into Verizon Wireless. I also had my Motorola V195s since October 2007... but I took pity on my friend whose Samsung phone went bonkers. Also I replaced my v195 with the Renew. My mom and aunt are still enjoying their W385 phones and I will just let them use them until the thing dies; hopefully it can hold out to at least November. One of my friends is using a 2 year old Samsung on Sprint... she doesnt want to get a new contract. Her phone only works thru Bluetooth or a wired headset... the speakers don't work ar all. My other aunt cycles thru few phones herself. I remember her having an old Audiovox (8500, I think) on MetroPCS for almost 3 years. She had her next phone for almost 2 years, and then that one died. She is using a Samsung r210... A buddy of mine has had his Audiovox 8910 for at least 3 or 4 years on alltel. To him, it works, so he is happy.
And so I'm not alone, we both have the same phone since September 2006, except yours is for prepaid, and mine is for postpaid. And I use it alot, like 8,000 - 10,000 minutes per month on average, and still somewhat in good shape. It is a great phone for doing field testing, which is why I love it and want to keep it, and perhaps even get another as a backup, but I'm hoping that a new company (VZW or someone else) will activate an Alltel phone.
My upgrade options open up next month. I'm going to wait for a T-Mo 3G blackberry later this year. I don't have 3G in my area yet anyway; it is supposed to be available by the end of the year, I hope. I'm also considering an Android phone.
A lot can change in six months, but right now I'm considering revamping when my postpaid at&t contract ends in October of this year. I'm happy with the phones I currently use; and depending on what transpires in the data plan arena (at&t has some new data plans available for the recent netbook introductions in the Atlanta and Philadelphia markets), I may give up my postpaid mobile account for a 200 MB LapTop Connect plan (for the same $40/month). I'm already using my prepaid account for messaging, and I would probably keep the data plan for the phone as well but move it to the prepaid account - no new phones needed. Only a new netbook. I'd have practically the same monthly service fees as now, but a "reallocation" of the expense to things that better suit my needs. (minimal voice - yet I would still have the ability via the prepaid plan) I use daily a Nokia 6820 (which I've had since Oct. 2005) and the E70 (since Feb. 2008).
