In Niagara Falls, ON, there is a wooden pole with come cell antennas on it. This pole is at the bottom of a steep hill with large buildings on one side, and the bridge to the US on the other side. I'm not sure what carrier it is, but it was there as long as I have been coming across the border from Buffalo. Now, I'll never know, because it's gone! In the time it took Google to do their street view drive up the road, and back down it, the pole was literally CUT down, and is no longer there. Anyone want to venture a guess on where it went, or why it was cut down? First you see it: Google Maps Now you don't: Google Maps Google Maps
Maybe the Google car smacked into it and knocked it down? ...actually, it couldn't have been in the same day. The area on the ground is all sodded over where the gray box at the bottom of the pole was. Also some pole in front of the pink fire hydrant changed too. Cars in the parking lots are all different too (Fun to compare pics, like those kids games where you have to count the differences in 2 nearly identical pics ) As for why would they take it down could be anyones guess. Maybe the found a better place to put the antennas.
I agree with RR they were not taken on the same day. The lawn looks different in both pics. It's likely they were taken days or even weeks apart.
Well, I never said it was the same day. It's just not very often you see a tower/pole vanish like that, literally cut down in this case.
Carrier's usually won't take down antennas unless they are forced to. Maybe they failed to obtain the permits and the city made them take it down or there was some leasing issue that prevented them from renewing their land lease.
Now that you mention it, I wonder when Google will delve into the automobile world and come out with the Google car? Stranger things have happened...
Yankee, that site looks a lot like one just outside of my town near the chemical plants. I've posted it before, but here is an updated better pic. It's located right along the river. As for the one you are referring to that disappeared on the google maps, I'm not sure. Bell and Telus seem to not have a site close to there, so that would be my guess. Not sure why they took it down though.
The antennas are really similar tho. I never saw any like that in Europe. Or the US come to think of it. Are these antennas used alot in Canada?
These are pretty much the only two sites I've seen with these antennas on them. I've never seen another carrier use them. I have another picture of this other antenna which I don't think is cellular (might be a repeater). I posted it in the forums awhile back but have been updating a lot of my photos with better/clearer ones recently. I'll have to see if I can find the better one. Again the antenna looks very similar to these ones. Except this one is attached to a building.
Here is the updated picture of the antenna I was referring to in the previous post. Like I said I've posted a picture of this awhile back, but with an older camera. You can see that the one antenna looks very similar to what is seen with the other two pictures. I don't think it's cellular though.
BUMP! Just to update, Google now puts the month and year the street view image was taken. The difference between the pictures was June to September, 2009.
