Ive just heard about a new nokia phone which sounds pretty cool. The 7710? not sure if it is out yet, but it apparantly is going to have handwriting recognition, which i would like to try out as my teacher always used to say i had ****e handwriting!!! Anyone know much more about it? Also, do you think i would be able to play my n-gage games on it, as i am thinking of upgrading to a more all round useful phone.
It's a Series 90 phone with Symbian OS 7. It depends on whether the games are compatible with the higher Symbian OS version. www.nokia.com/phones/7710
i live in delhi and I have been waiting for this phone to be released after nokia announced it's launch. check out the review on www.mobilemag.com/content/100/340/C3374/ also try the demo on nokia's site, which will give you a good idea of it's multimedia features. it is very sleek design and i'm sure your teacher will notice it.
cheers for the review, says it all really doesnt it? Sounds great to me. cant believe it has real player and stuff on it. It definately looks cool, though not sure whether"your teacher" will really notice, as i dont go to school;!!!!
there is mobile fest/exhibition in Delhi between 23-26th. I think nokia will be there so you can try a demo of the 7710 there.
i keep hearing that the 7710 is coming out in a few days in the US. i'll keep looking around, but does anyone know if this is true? I have seen a few ebayers and they look legit...i'm dying to get my hands on one of these but don't know if that's gonna happen before christmas or not.
That would be a first. A new Nokia coming out in the US before it is released in Europe. I would stay away from eBay when dealing with auctions that claim to have new releases which aren't even out in the mainstream market. Normally, it's a scam.
so you would discourage anyone from buying the 7710 from e-bay. also even if I did buy it, I'm sure it would be released by Nokia in Delhi, before my purchase arrives.
okay, i did some searching around and found that you can actually purchase them from importgsm.com. I saw their ad on gsmarena and i had a quick email chat with the owner (or one of the managers, anyway.) they are the first ones i've found that are in the U.S. and are selling the 7710 for real. I placed an order from them yesterday and i have the 7710 coming to me in 2 days. i'll keep you guys posted as to whether or not the transaction goes smoothly!
Well I would just advise caution since most scams with new phones tend to happen on eBay before they're even released.
so i should avoid all sales of mobiles if they have not been released, but if they have been released it should be fine.
Basically, I would say it's your call but most people bidding on eBay auctions for phones that are being offered by dealers from other countries have been scammed. So it's best to stay local unless you have no other choice. Ordering from Nokia in Europe might be one alternative. Here are some examples where eBay did not work well: http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?s=513469 http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?s=482894 http://69.28.255.130/fraudarticle/ebay_fraud.htm http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?s=510076 http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?s=509617 Then again, India tends to get most Nokia handsets.
ive heard it is to be released in Monaco, bt not till next year according to the nokia site: http://www.nokia.com/nokia/0,,65385,00.html id rather wait i think. Dont want to get done over, though i cant wait to actually have a go on the little beauty. Its design will really help with things at work, etc...
No problem. I would be quite surprised if it was not released in India. As for the release date of the 7710: "The Nokia 7710 works on GSM/GPRS/EGPRS 900/1800/1900 networks, with shipments in Asia and China planned to begin in the fourth quarter, 2004 and in Europe and Africa in the first quarter, 2005." http://press.nokia.com/PR/200411/966974_5.html
Coming back to the originally posted reason-for-interest... In my experience touch-screens are very prone to failure and missed input. Their failure rate is such that within a year you have a worthless peice of junk. I have had 3 touch-screen devices. Given the cost verses value of devices with this feature, I can no longer justify the expense. Anyone else have experiences (good or bad) about these?
so I take it you won't buy a touch screen again. However it might be a problem in the future if the majority of new phones are touch screen. Also why do you think they are prone to failure.
Like everything else, I *expect* that the technology WILL get better and more dependable. (Of course, I also expect to retire a billionaire some day, but that's another story ) You are right that I am in no hurry to grab any touch-screen device at this time. In fact, after having actually gone against my better judgement and bought a "swiss army knife" (old post/thread), I must admit I am disappointed with it to the point that the next phone I buy will be a basic, dependable, voice-only model. (I am sick of paying for services that don't work!) Why do I think the technology is prone to failure--the same reason the manufactures do--miniaturization is trouble-prone. Mgmt and Marketing trying to rush things to market that should never have been released, etc, etc.
i have been reading recently, that a lot of people are buying basic phones again. They are getting sick of all the functions which they don't know how to use or will never use. They just want to use the phone, so old phones are very popular.
Unic: Yes, you are right. I've read the same articles. However, it is not because I don't like the functions or don't know how to use them. I'm your basic nerd that loves technology. (Well, okay, I'm not your "basic" nerd. Your run-of-mill, basic nerd is perceived (stereotyped) as someone who relates better to equipment than they do people. I have an affinity for both. So I guess I'm an enhanced nerd I have supported, taught & tutored technology; work in an IT department; have a home network; 6+ gig of MP3 files; an avid digital photographer using a pro-sumer grade and soon to be professional grade camera. I am a VBA programmer on the side; create webpages and much more.) On the interpersonal side, one of my closest friends is a window washer. Another is an accountant and still another is a graphics design artist. (Making the point that I'm quite adept at associating with a wide range of peoples and backgrounds.) Again, my problem with the advanced-function (swiss army knife) phones is that their failure rate is not worth my spending the extra bucks on. Basically, I (and every other schmuck enticed by them) am funding the makers' research department and lining their pockets with cash for stuff that does not work as advertised.
you're right. no phone can be problem free, especially the amount of usage the average phone user gets. I am confident that the 7710 will be problem free, when I buy it. It looks like they spent a long time on r & d on this phone.
Ive only used other pda's rarely and the ones which i have used with touch screen seem really useful and quick to use. The handwriting function sounds really useful. I guess you just need to take care of the screen. Otherwise it wont recognise anything.
Which PDAs did you use? It seems like Palm(One), HP and HTC (the Taiwanese company which makes the SPV, MDA, SDA and other PDA/smartphone-type phones) are doing something right. Then again, I don't use PDAs .
the p800, which was okay, but i admit to having a bit of a thing for nokia, so im glad they are bringing out a seemingly nicely designed pda, which allows you to use it for a number of purposes.
it's true though the more you take care it, the less problems you will have. The way I treat my mobile, I'm still surprised it works!
yeah well, if i get a 7710 which i think i probably will upon its release, ill definately look after it. you have to with touch screen phones. To be honest im a bit ____ when it comes to having something new and fairly expensive, i like to look after things.
Makes you wonder what kind of cases Nokia will offer for the 7710. It'll make an interesting shape addition to Nokia's OEM accessories palette.
well the 7710 comes with a carrying case with a cleaning cloth, which is a good idea concerning it is touchscreen. I presume the case shape is the same as the 7710's shape.
youd imagine wouldnt you? so they should too, i mean you pay enough to get new phones, so why shouldnt they provide something when you buy it to keep it in top condition, rather than trying to rinse more money off you for accessories.
