Is anyone aware whether Cingular will be carrying the new Nokia 6360 phone? If so, any idea when it will be released?

I have heard that Cingular is supposed to get the 6340 (GAIT-compliant). ATT is carrying the 6360 and doesn't plan on carrying the 6340.

The Nokia 6340 is in some Cingular stores, although they have been put on hold for some reason. I have heard two different reasons: 1) a software issue with the phone
    2) the software on the TDMA network is not working yet. The 6340 will require a different IRDB file than other phones. Currently Cingular can only send out one IRDB file based on the market you are in and not by individual phone model. They have just put up a new platform to handle IRDB files. This should solve the problem. Some of the new Nokia phones will handle larger IRDB files than the older ones.

IRDB a file that is downloaded over the network to your phone. This file tells your phone which systems it prefers to roam on. The older phones only hold 80 or so SIDs (system IDs) and the newer ones will hold larger ones, but Cingular has yet to take advantage of the larger file size.

Those are the two reasons I have heard... the second reason is the one that I beilieve. I do know for a fact that a new platform to handle the IRDB files was put in place about three weeks ago.

I emailed Cingular asking about the 6360. Here's their reply:

Thank you for contacting Cingular Wireless. Unfortunately, I do not
know when or if we will be offering the Nokia 6360 in the Illinois
market. I do know that since we will be offering GSM technology in the
future, most of our emphasis is geared toward introducing new phones
which will allow customers to switch to GSM, without purchasing a new
phone, once it is available in our area . At least one tri-mode phone
should be available in the near future.

Please keep an eye on our web site for the latest developments. We know
you have a choice when it comes to wireless service. We appreciate and
thank you for choosing Cingular Wireless.

    Sincerely,
    Cingular Wireless
