    Hey guys.

Crushed my trusty old Nokia 6190 in the door frame of my car [IMG]

Looking to replace it with the new Nokia 6310i, only Cingular keeps pushing back the release date, and now have said it will be the 6410i (which I'm assuming will be the Cingular proprietary version of the 6310i,) and they can't tell me when -- if ever -- they are going to receive them.

I found a place on the web (mobilecityonline.com) to order the 6310i, which says "This Phone is Unlocked and will work on any GSM network with any SIM card"

Anyone tried this before? Is it true? Will it work? I want to know before I plunk down the cash. Also, has anyone bought from this vendor before? Any comments -- positive or negative -- to offer ?

Any and all help gratefully received.

    Cheers, mates,
    Chris

According to a Cingular customer service assistant they work as long as the service is GSM 900/1900 and it's unlocked. I'm trying to get the same phone and they said it'll work. The 7210 also works. The triband should work and if you want you could verify it from the customer service yourself and ask if you have anymore questions.

I'm not familiar with the vendor. I noticed that the phones are limited here and I had to get it outside of the country myself. Goodluck with your search. [IMG]

Thanks so much for your answer. [IMG]

I guess I'm just going to buy the phone and hope for the best. You're dead right -- the selection of phones at Cingular was pretty narrow and uninteresting. It was while researching those choices that I ran across the 6310i, and in the end, this was the phone I decided I want. As I wrote before, Cingular first said they were going to carry it, then that it was delayed, now it will be a different model with an unknown release date... and I can't wait any longer to be without a phone.

Just out of curiosity, where are you looking to buy yours? "Out of country" ?

[IMG] My only apprehension (after reading through many of the threads) is that some of the niftier services -- email, picture mail, GPRS, Mobile Internet, etc. won't funciton correctly because they won't be "burned in" the phone by Cingular.

Does anyone know if this might be a problem? How difficult will it be for me to set up these services on my own?

    Cheers,
    Christa

Sorry to pester you, but my old phone is crushed, and I can't be without phone service much longer, as it is my primary business line. I need to figure this problem out!

If I buy an unlocked phone, will things like email, SMS, WAP, etc. work? I am currently subscribed to Cingular in Orange County, CA.

    /Chris

Indeed they will work. Services such as SMS, WAP, GPRS are features built into the phone, not features which the network provider magically gifts the phone with. You mentioned picture messaging, that is NOT available on the 6310i - this is not an MMS phone (look at 7210 if you need that). Buying a Sim-Free unlocked phone is the best way to go, it gives you the flexibility to move networks, without changing phone. I realize however that that isn't so easy in the USA since you guys use a bundle of CDMA, TDMA, GSM, AMPS (of which the 6310i only supports one - GSM). Over here in Europe unlocked is the way to go!

If you're ever roaming in Europe/Asia you'll be quids-in, with triband (900/1800/1900) you'll be able to roam on like any network in Europe and many in Asia. With it being unlocked you'll even be able to buy a cheap pre-pay SIM card and pay much more favourable rates (like NO charges for receiving calls) - here in the UK you can get a prepay SIM with £5 of calls for £10 ($15).

So, as long as the network you want to be on uses GSM 1900Mhz then it will work, no proprietary network fiddling needed!

    Celticsinger,

How has the 6310i worked for you? I'm in a similar situation.

I have a 6310i with T-Mobile and I got it unlocked from an eBay merchant. It works great and I can even use it as a dial-up modem! I would highly recommend this phone and it is sure to be up-to-date for a few years, unless you have to have one of those color screen phones which I don't think are incredibly practicle since you don't look at your phone, you talk into it. The 6310i is loaded with practically every feature you could want.
