Re: Preliminary Nokia 6131 Review - Part I... this seam to be getting more popular, my 6682 has offline mode, and the pantech has airplane mode.:loony:
Re: Preliminary Nokia 6131 Review - Part I... Are you suggesting I read a manual??????? Since my 6131 is made for the SE Asian market, it is 40% Melayu, 40% Chinese & 20% English. My Cingular branded 6682 manual did have both Spanish & English though You never know....
Re: Preliminary Nokia 6131 Review - Part I... It happens I'm going to be in Chicago next week for a meeting. I may try to pop out to the Nokia store and see if the employees know anything. Presumably they won't be as cagey about their phone release dates as Cingular folks. Now lets see, if I have a free afternoon, will it be the Art Institute of Chicago or the Nokia store...hmmm...
Re: Preliminary Nokia 6131 Review - Part I... Ahh, you are coming to my favorite city and less than an 1.5 hours from me. There are Art Institutes in every big & small city in the US but this is THE Nokia Store.... . Unfortunately I have to wait until one of the theaters has something that my "SO" wants to go to or a new exhibit at the Art Institute or the Field Museum, or maybe even something new at the Shedd Aquarium. He will never agree to going to Chicago to see "The Nokia Store" . Let us know if the store is fantastic as people have described it. The Moto store is also right there btw. Here is another one of my shameless rf bragging...yesterday I could carry can an entire conversation about the merits of buying brats presoaked in beer as opposed to soaking the brats in beer after grilling them, from inside the grocery store, another place around here with poor rf..... PS: I don't know about Nokia not being as cagey as Cingular, they seem to say similar things, atleast in my experience.
Re: Preliminary Nokia 6131 Review - Part I... Yes, when you've seen one incredible French Impressionist painting, you've seen them all. So tell him they've discovered a new dinosaur or something. I always like looking at the dinosaur skeleton that the Field Museum has in O'Hare. OK, I will. I suppose the Nokia store is only fantastic to a relatively 'select few'. Most people barely know what brand of phone they have, in my experience. My wife can spend about 3 min in a phone store, and she usually comes in to retrieve me . After a quick glance to see which new phones look cute, she is heading out the door. Hard choice between that and the Art Institute, though. I may try to do both. Today I'm in Vancouver so I'm going to see if Rogers has anything that Cingular doesn't have.
Re: Preliminary Nokia 6131 Review - Part I... So what did you find out? Did Rogers have anything that Cingular does not? I had an extremely interesting conversation with a CS rep from Nokia USA, this morning on the difference between 6131 & 6126. I was very impressed with her knowledge and her helpful attitude. She was not only familiar with the Nokia phones past, present & future, she was very interested in handsets in general. Anyway, she couldn't find any difference between the 2 models herself and went 2 levels up to see if anybody could find anything. The general consensus was that there was no difference except the language packs and support and warranty issues. So it will be interesting to see if 6126 owners can do video messaging, since the 6131 owners have not been able to make it work. She also said, that the 6126 will be available from Nokia directly, unlocked, unbranded and should be out within a month. I think even though it will be unbranded it will probably be "Cingular ready", just like the 6230 & 6682 was from Nokia directly. So the Cengulat settings will be preprogrammed. Just my 2 cents....
Re: Preliminary Nokia 6131 Review - Part I... Wow Charlyee, that's worth more like a nickel!!! :browani:
Re: Preliminary Nokia 6131 Review - Part I... To get Video messaging working, there has to be a difference in the software somewhere. Cingular installs certain certificate files in their branded phones so that they are able to download content like java games. Something like this may be needed for video messaging. Cingular can also disable certaing features for their branded version. Let's hope they don't disable FM radio.
Re: Preliminary Nokia 6131 Review - Part I... Yes, they have the RAZR V3i. The other one that interested me was the Samsung t609. I'm not much of a Samsung fan, but this one looks interesting - quad flip with an MP3 player and transflash (T-Mobile has this, BTW). I was at an independent Rogers dealer. When I told the rep that I am a Cingular customer and would only be interested in a non-Cingular phone if it were unlocked, she offered that her technician could unlock most of their phones (not the V3i, however). I think the price was $50. She also said that Rogers company stores also do this, but the price was even higher. While this is no bargain, I'm surprised they do it at all. I guess I thought that was contrary to the carrier's business model.
Re: Preliminary Nokia 6131 Review - Part I... Another pleasant surprise for me I was able to install Opera Mini. So now I can browse the "real" sites, as I am now.
Re: Preliminary Nokia 6131 Review - Part I... Hi Joe, Opera Mini is a free software that allows full browser capability on the phones not just thru the WAP site. That's why my posts are not showing up as wireless posts even though I am posting with the 6131. Here is the web site. http://www.opera.com/products/mobile/operamini/campaign/ For all you non-believers of unbranded, warranty less phones, I hope the 6126 is atleast as fantastic and comes out soon....
After using this phone for 6 weeks, I have to say, it is still as good as when I first got it. So far, the only thing that still bothers me is the slight side to side play of the top in the flip closed position. I also found something interesting, if I let the battery get too low, even before it gives an audible alarm it will turn the screensaver clock on the outer dispaly off and the wallpaper will stay dimly lit. It maybe because I have it on the "power saver mode". Also I can make a minimum of 15 mins. worth of phone calls after the battery gives the audible alarm of "low". I like this very much, on my LG, it will give the audible and turn off almost immediately and the PEBL was almost as bad as the LG.
Excellent my little engineer buddy, you get another nickel! ("Just my 2 cents".... says Charlyee------ Wow Charlyee, that's worth more like a nickel!!!)
As a matter of fact Charlyee, my company just bought yours, and I am changing my last name to Burns!!! How do you like them amperes????
Hey buddy stop trashing my review, and go trash your s200 review instead.... Going back to topic, I just downloaded google maps and searched for my house, worked like a charm. Yet another pro for the 6131. Nokia, I believe is starting to ship out the N73 this week, if I can resist buying the N73, that will be the ultimate acid test of how good the 6131 is...
Bobolito asked me in another thread, where the microphone on this phone was, well I couldn't find it. So today when I was at Cingular paying my bill, I asked the tech about it, this is how the conversation went: ME: Can you tell me where the microphone is on this phone? (I open it before handing it to him) TECH: Holy Crap, look at that screen...awesome. ME: Yes, I know. TECH: Is this the 6126? ME: No, it is the 6131. TECH: Where did you get it? ME: Umm does it matter. TECH: I love how it opens (proceeds to keep playing with opening & closing it). ME: So where is the microphone? (as I try to pry it from his hands) TECH: Love how fast the web browsing is (as he goes into Media-Net) ME: Hey give my phone back. TECH: Sorry, I don't know where the microphone is, never seen one like it. I could take it apart for you but it would void the warranty. ME: It probably doesn't have one (my mistake-should have never said that, he then proceeded to "educate" me on manufacturer's warranty vs. providers's warranty, and assure me that NokiaUsa would honor it even if I got it overseas...yeah right!). So I take the phone from him, say "thank you" and "see you" and leave... So I guess I will have to wait until one of you get the 6126.
I am tempted to believe you WG. The speaker is at the bottom right side of the phone and would be in a logical position to serve as a microphone also. Interestingly there is nothing mentioned in the manual (yes I actually went back and read the manual )on the location of the microphone.
first off ive never heard of a cell phone doing that. but i know its been done some where, just caint remember where. either in a cb, long time cb'er here. or the radio's we used in country[vn]. and if i remember right they were cdma incoded radio's. ill rack my brain and see if i can remember.:loony: just had a thought, maybe my fire radio, dang memery.:loony:
Re: Preliminary Nokia 6131 Review - Part I... I see that the Nokiausa.com web site has changed the 6126's listed features from what was posted before. The 6126 is no longer listed with an FM radio, nor does it have Irda (infrared connectivity). The UK nokia site still lists the 6131 as having those features. Earlier, both sites had the same listing. VF
Re: Preliminary Nokia 6131 Review - Part I... If Cingular has made Nokia cripple this phone, that's really low. Another important question to ask in the Nokia store, for you Meet 'n Greeters. I kind of liked the FM radio on my 6200. If I was listening to a really interesting program while driving, I didn't have to turn it off, or stay in my car, when I got where I was going - I could just take it with me. As a side note, the "radio" on the LG CU500 is really streaming digital audio they call "MobiRadio". Just like the streaming video, they "highly recommend" that you pay $20/month for unlimited data. No thanks. I don't need it that badly.
Re: Preliminary Nokia 6131 Review - Part I... Yes, I like the radio on my 6230, but I'm getting very addictd to my Zen nano+. The guy in the Cingular store said mid to late Aug for the 6126.
