I haven't used a 6230 since 09/05 but from what I remember the 6131's UI is definitely as fast may even be faster. It is faster than the succession of phones I have had since then, the SE z520i, 6682, QTEK 9100, V557, and the PEBL.

    Hey Charlyee,

How are the pre-installed wallpapers, themes, and ringers? Is there more of a selection of each than there would be with a Cingular-branded phone?
I ask this because the 6103 I got from T-Mobile had even less stuff than the 6101. I know sometimes the Eurasion versions have more stuff on them. Just curious...:)

Hi Mike, there are 5 preinstalled themes, 9 walpapers & 15 ringtones. The themes & wallpapers & reasonable. I use my own favorite ringtones so I didn't play with the pre-installed ones. You are right my Eurasian SE Z520i did have more choices than the Cingular 520a.

Re: Preliminary Nokia 6131 Review - Part I...

I have had a couple of PMs from Nokia 6131 users that have basically said that after using the nokia website to send the messanging and media net settings to the phone, when trying to access media net it says "subscribe to packet data first".

So here is what I did that works on my phone:

    1. Go into Web Options
    2. Settings.
    3. Configuration Settings.
    3a. Configuration - Cingular ISP
    3b. Account - Cingular Express.

    I hope this helps. :)

Thanks Charlyee for the info. As a fellow "Wireless Addict" I'm feeling the itch to get a new phone..:O ..So as you can imagine I'm practically foaming at the mouth at all the new and exciting phones Nokia has. I'm contemplating between the 6131, 6682, and even the E61 . Oh, the humanity!!! :googlyeye

Thanks Charlyee for the info. I am looking forward to get the 6126 when Cingular releases it. I hope they don't remove some of its features like FM Radio and that NetMonitor is hackable. ;)

Oh, if it were so. Consensus on HoFo seems to be that it is delayed again. May not be delayed for too long, but apparently they are still testing a software revision.

viewfly, please don't shoot the messenger....:D According to our local corporate store it is tentatively scheduled for July end and he didn't sound too hopeful about that date either.

Here is something to make the waiting harder yet for you, I has able to receive a call and have a decent conversation in one of the stairwells at work, where I don't remember any phone, except sometimes the 6230, holding onto a signal for the entire length.....:)

LOL!....thanks Charlyee for being so cruel! :D

Anyway, viewfly, which 5 days are you talking about? I hope you are aware that the July 5th date is a no-no.

Patiently waiting for the release on July **th. Sorry, the forum filter erased the date. :(

Since it is my birthday, maybe I'll consider the 6131...the best price i'm finding is $299. Did you do better than that Charlyee?

Software problems with Cingular doesn't sound good.

Re: Preliminary Nokia 6131 Review - Part I...

Lol viewfly, my turn to say "et tu"?

Yes I did do better than that. keep in mind that they do not offer any warranty, there are other places that do. I know Steven2420 got it on E-bay for about $20 less than I did. I have bought all my "worldphones" from them, very hassle-free, comes from Hong Kong in 3 days or 2 depending on the shipping you choose.

I have to caution you though before you dive in, if you have not already please read the 100+ pages of this thread, there seems to be some problems/situations for some people using the 6131 on Cingular.

Neither Steven or I have found any problems except that we cannot receive video messages (something that I couldn't care less about).

    Hope this helps.....:)

PS: Ofcourse I am doing shameless rf bragging, isn't that what I did when I got my 6230 before you.....

Oh did I mention it is really fast, like it's turbo charged well actually it must have a super charger not turbo, since there is no initial lag..:rotfl:

Lol, thanks bobolito I am really enjoying myself.:D

Btw, just to aggravate all the ones that are waiting for Cingular to launch the 6126, I cannot help quoting what a poster in HoFo said:

"The Nokia 6126,along with the Moto V3i,were supposed to be out by the end of the 2nd Q. However the phones were operating too well.Cingular hopes to have all the software bugs installed for a 3rd Q release."...........................:D

Go ahead and laugh - especially people from Laughlin, NV :browani: - but some of us don't think this is so funny. We've been teased and tempted, we've been pushed back and pushed off, we've been delayed and dissed. I just can't take it anymore! :crying: ..:p .... :D

Re: Preliminary Nokia 6131 Review - Part I...

LOL! Good one! Patience is a virtue I have plenty of, so keep laughing....my phone will be newer than yours when the 6126 launches. ;) :D

It's looking more like August, folks! :( Approval was scheduled by the middle of July, so that can easily push store availability to August.

Just some questions for you Charlyee:

    1) When you use the MP3 player, can you just close the flip and it will continue playing? The Motorola V635 does this very nicely.

    2) Can you fast forward within a song? The Motorola MP3 player on the V635 does not FF, but it will FF on the Multimedia browser. Makes no sense.

    3) Does the phone pause the MP3 player for incoming calls and go back to the MP3 where it left off after you hang up? My Moto handles this very well.

    4) If your ringtone is an MP3, and you are playing an MP3 song, does the phone still use the MP3 ringtone if a call comes in? Seems like something basic, but Motorolas can't do this.

    5) When you use the speakerphone, can you just close the flip during a call and stay connected? The Sony Ericsson z520a disconnects if you close the flip during a speakerphone call.

LOL, that's true, your phone will be newer than mine and will also have the software bugs that my phone is missing...;) :D

    1. Yes
    2. If you FF when a song is playing, it goes to the next one.
    3. Yes, and very well also.
    4. Yes
    5. Yes.

I just found yet another feature that I find very useful. When sending a text message, it gives the option to choose a name from recently used, message log, contact, and contact group. Since I only exchange txt messages with 3 people, I always open the message log which contains these 3 names, instead of searching through all the contacts.

Re: Preliminary Nokia 6131 Review - Part I...

On my 6230, I can FF within a song using the Nokia Media Player; if I try to FF the same song played accessed directly on the MMC, it will skip to the next song. i.e. it depends on how you access the song within Nokia's phone menu options. An odd twist, or bug. The prefered way is the Media Player. You also can have the songs play in random order. When you pause, it goes back to the same spot.

Also, there is some functionally within the earpiece controls too. I expect the 6126 to have the same or better (I hope). Plus it has the 'airplane' mode.

    AUGUST! I'm Disgusted!

Re: Preliminary Nokia 6131 Review - Part I...

bobolito, Sorry about that, no it can not do FF.

viewfly, I just checked playing MP3 from the phone's memory as opposed to the Micro SD and it does not look like it does FF from there either. I am using the built in Music Player, and did not create any playlists.

The "flight" mode is great. I was at the hospital last week for someone and put the phone in the flight mode. Everything remains active & useable except transmission & reception. There is a cute blue airplane icon that shows up on the front screen, helped pass the time in the waiting room.

There is one thing that it does lack that I wish it had - there is no way to change modes from meeting to standard without opening the flip, with my last 2 flips I could do it with a combination of the side buttons.

PS: There is a rumor in PhoneScoop that the 6126 will be available from the Nokia site the week of July 17th.

That's cool about the airplane mode. I always thought that was a smart idea for the places where you couldn't have your phone on :)

Uh oh... I know of quite a few on this forum who will be drooling if that rumor is true! :browani:

Charlyee, what if you hold the |> button while playing a song? Some players will skip to the next song when you press it, but if you hold it for a while, it will FF instead of skipping to the next song. Have you tried that?

It is the almost the opposite with the Motorola V635. It will do FF if you access a song through the Sound menu, but if you access a song through the MP3 player it will not FF. You would think the MP3 player would have more functionality than the Sound menu!

Yes, that is how the 6230 is also, in mp3 player mode: if you hit the 5 way button it will skip to the next song; if you press and hold then it will FF or FR.

    I forgot to mention that.

Actually, the Nokia manual should say something about that. That is how I learned. Does anyone also notice that motorola manuals are about the same thickness as Nokia's, except that Nokias is all english and the Moto's are in at least 2 languages? I find there is so little info in the moto's.
