I think viewfly, Vapor, and I have an advantage over you and Maverick, coming from the 6230 it is much more intuitive for us. You are right though each manufacturer's UI is different. LOL, I do, don't I? This is actually pretty high even for me. There was about 20 messages exchanged with a couple of wireless addict friends about the Cingular 3125. Then there was around another 40 exchanges with a friend who wanted me to talk him out of buying the 6131. He has to be crazy right, why would I talk anyone out of buying a phone I like so much. Hey maybe he just wants to use me as an excuse to get the 6131. Viewfly, here is the final results from a fully charged battery to the phone shutting off due to dead battery this morning: 74.233 mins of talk time 74 text messages 2 mms 6 calendar alarms 11 one step calculations 5 syncs via BT, Deletd 72 message. Changed time on Alarm Clock once Some playing with menus. I know from prior experience that the 74 texts translates to a min of 74 mins. of talk time. (SteveW, if you are reading this the word is still "precise" and not the "a" word )
Of course I am reading your posts Charlyee and, my little joke notwithstanding, your precision has crossed over the boundary into obsessive compulsion, this time. SW
Steve, you are an absolute riot, I do have to admit that I really enjoyed tracking the battery usage, infact I have a nice little worksheet for it with the data and many other details on it. You know what is funny, I did start on one text messages and was about 25% done and got interrupted by the phone shutting off on me when the battery died.
That is indeed interesting and useful. If you say 74SMS = 74 minutes, that must come from the screen consumption plus the RF to send the message. So, therefore the screen consumes quite a bit of power, since SMS consumes less power than voice. But given that info, and unless you 'cooked the books',it agrees with the back of the envelope calcuation I did with Maverick22's data; maverick22 took the battery down to 1/3, and I calcuated that a full depletion would be 2.3 hours, and you have 74 + 74 or 2.5 hours for a dead battery. Wow, pretty close. How can I do it? LOL Of course included in this is all the fooling around with menus and the like. Ok, my memory is a little gone on one point: it's been a while since I've drained my battery. Does the icon go down by thirds or quarters? In any case its still pretty close. Perhaps Nokia's specs of 'up to 3.4 hours' is not too dishonest, because I can only assume they are only looking a rf transmission times and when you have 'full bars' and the phone scales back the RF power output. In that case, this battery /phone combo is not that bad...we're just trying to do so many things with it at once. An interesting back calcuation would be to look at your cingular bill for a few months, add up the minutes used (rollover, n/w and regular) and divide by the number of days in the month to get at your average daily usage in hours. One way to figure what kind of phone you need. Fortunately for me I almost never spend 2 hours on the phone talking...not even a landline...so I can take advantage of the other features pretty freely. If I did get to that point, I'd probably buy a second battery rather than give up the other features, like the screen. Nokia does sell a battery only charger for this phone series. vf
Interesting and impresssive viewfly. Ofcourse I did not "cook the books", geez what would give you that idea....... ..lol My assumption is that it is the screen while texting because it stays on while reading, composing, deleting, copying, and everything else. The icon goes down 1/3, 2/3, and then 5/6 (I am guessing). The low battery signal comes on after about 5 mins of talk time on 5/6 usage and then it gives approximately 10 more minutes of talk time.
Agreed, specially the processing time with t9 which I use exclusively ever since Steve got me addicted to it.
Oh, come on, it takes a bit more processor time, but you finish your message faster, so it could be that using T9 actually takes less energy. I'd bet that you could devise an experiment and data analysis protocol to test this. BTW, Charlyee, love your new avatar. Is the witch flying past a cell tower? SW
Certainly looks that way, guess Charlyee is our cellular witch Actually T9 text prediction continuously access the ROM/RAM to create the words, the cycles would indeed take more battery time.
Sure Steve, I will post my results tomorrow . Thanks, glad you like my avatar, it's my favorite. Gamer made it for me. Ofcourse she is flying over a cell tower viewfly, do you top off your battery every morning irrespective of how much you have used the phone? Thanks
Yes, I top it off every morning. I'm careful not to overcharge it however. The batteries today prefer to be charged and can do so without the old memory effects, as long as you give it the few full cycles when new. Every now and then, I do a full cycle also. It's just the way I am, but after 9/11 here, I feel you never know when you had wished for a full battery charge. Nice Avatar too. I think the little experiments and input between you and maverick22 have given more solid information on battery life then any previous posts. Saying it's s??ks, or great isn't too useful to others. P.S. When the mini display say 'Battery Full' I usually disconnect the charger.
viewfly, thanks. I think I will start on the same charging schedule from tomorrow. It will work great for me (not when I am chasing the chicken around the yard...lol), I usually spend the first hour at work inside the factory and only my intrinsically safe Moto is allowed there, so the 6131 can be on the charger at that time. Glad our battery data is going to be helpful. nKrypteD1, yep I am the cellular witch and I love cell towers & lightning ......
Viewfly, I'm glad you told me about you charging your phone in the morning. That's working out great for me!
No not the 557, the Motorola i325 IS, it is a company issued Nextel phone and is Intrinsically safe for use in Class I, Div I areas. Sorry about the confusion. OT, you know with as much time as you spend in this thread why don't you forget about your LG mission and just get the 6131.....
OK, but now I need to know what a Class I, Div I area is. Is that anything like Area 51? It's just a matter of time... SW
I would assume it has to do with radio interferance in high sensitive areas, such as communications hubs, around explosive dumps, etc.
That is very close, except it is not rf interference but anything that causes sparks that can set off a fire in a flammable situation. Communication hubs are not impacted. SteveW, Class is part of the National Electric Code definitions of hazardous location classifications and protection techniques. The Class classification is a segment of the basic designation which is listed by ''class'' and ''division, then further subdivided into Goups a, b, c, d. All depending on the type of hazaed and if they would present under normal operating conditions. We don't carry normal cell phones, watches, flashlights, and anything else that can generate spark anywhere in the factory except the Main Pedestrian Aisle. What is just a "matter of time" you giving up on your LG/Cingular mission or getting a 6131?
OK, thanks, that's interesting. Details, details. It's the latter, actually. I don't give up on missions easily and I still really like the CU500 for a lot of reasons. We'll see which becomes my pirmary phone and which my secondary . SW
Very good. Before the 6131, I would do something similiar with my 6230. I had a Nokia car holder for that phone which the Nokia car charger would plug into. Nokia's car charger is a very rapid charger ( 30 minutes or so) and it included electronics to shut off at full charge (a feature the phones do not have or their chargers). So during my drive in the morning, the phone would get topped off that way and I didn't have to worry about over charging. Unfortunately, the 6131 doesn't have the same type of connectors or car holder, so I switched to charging in the morning at home to top the battery off that way. Glad it works for you...seems a smarter way to do battery management instead of charging at night. Best,
Well I charged my phone this morning and it kind of backfired on me a little because I was out of my office for 1.5+ hours and I know that charge would have been completed way before that since I really had not used my phone too much yesterday. I have the Nokia AC-3U, and somewhere in the specs it did say that it goes down to the standby mode after the charge is completed to prevent over charging or short circuit. I have to admit I do like having a fully charged phone all day and I can easily make charging every morning a habit. Thank you for the suggestion viewfly.
I have a very dumb question...:O . Please don't everyone at once tell me how can she not know this after having the phone for 4 months, 8 days, 10 hours and 35 mins (think precise Steve.. ). In my text message log I have 2 numbers for Sent and 2 for Received. When I came home the numbers were: Sent Text Messages....188/193 Received Text Messages 194/203. Since then I have sent 4 messages and sent 6 and now the numbers are: Sent Text Messages....192/197 Received Text Messages 200/209 So all 4 numbers went up according to what I Sent and Received. My question is what is the second set of numberes, i.e. when it says 200/209, what is the 200 and what is the 209. I actually checked the manual on this and it does not tell me what the numbers signify only how to check the message log. Thanks for all help....
Stump the Chumps hey! Well I don't know, my are pretty close, only 1 off. But when I press details, it says 59/60 Details says 59 messages 60 parts. So maybe it means that some of your messages were long and came in 2 or more parts? I know if i request a bill message from Cing, it can come in two parts. What do you think?
I knew I could count on you viewfly. That seems to be a very plausible explanation, I hadn't checked my details and yes they are the same way as yours. I don't recall sending multiple 2 part messages but it's possible. I guess I will just send myself a long (2 part) message and see what happens. Thanks much PS: I just checked and you are absolutely correct. Now the spreads are one more than before. Actually that also explains something related, a friend of mine does not get my long messages completely on his 6230, so I have to remember to not have Part 2 when I send him a text.Interestingly I can receive his long messages fine, the 6131 just shows a part of the message and almost immediately says "updating message" and the full message gets downloaded.
It was just a guess on my part...I never really looked at the message log before. I noticed that the 6131 allows 1000 characters for a single SMS. Well yesterday I had my first drop with the phone It hit a metal filing cabinet on the way to the floor. I got a tiny white mark, ok scratch, on the glossy black bezel around the external display, about 5 o'clock position. It really is tiny, and looks like a speck of dust. Really nothing, but , boy , my eye keeps going towards it. So I had enough. With a fine point 'sharpie' permanent black marker, I carefully touched the scratch a few times, and viola, no more white mark. At least it is invisible unless you get the light just so and look hard. I'm a happy camper again P.S. Charlyee I like your seasonal avatar. I would do the same, but I'm afraid someone might steal my avatar while it's gone.
1000 characters is what my manual says also but I noticed that at the start of a new message it says 913/1. Then somewhere around 751 or so, depending on the number of spaces and capital letters, it starts on part 2, I didn't check what happens beyond that. Ouch, sorry to hear that, glad it was minor. Somehow unlike my mishaps with the 6230, I have managed to hold on to this one so far (knocks on head). Thank you viewfly, it is one of my favorites. If your avatar got stolen you wouldn't have to look too far, I would have it.
Odd, mine starts at 1000,even with the address already in. at 840, it begins page 2 (didn't the original sms limit at 160?), so that makes sense. I guess that means that if I texted you Charlyee, I would always get the last word in  I have to admit that sms'ing is much easier with this phone. Not sure if it is the keys or the flip design. I like the colorful display icons on the external screen when you miss a call and the vm icon shows up: the ones that show up whe the digital clock reappears. P.S. my daughter, who hates nokia's (the apple does fall far from the tree sometimes) thinks that with this phone, nokia, 'made some good progess', and approves.
You must have GREAT eyes, viewfly. Those icons on the external display are so tiny. Wait, are you referring to the icons when the phone has been inactive for awhile & the screen is gray? If so, those icons are nearly impossible for me to see. I wish Nokia would have made those icons bigger (they're incredibly small), and the numbers on the digital clock a little bolder/bigger or something, something making it easier to see. It's weird, I can see the info. on the external gray screen BETTER in direct sunlight. The info. is pretty tough to see in lower lighting situations. My past phones have been the opposite (very hard to see in direct sunlight). Still really enjoying the phone! I'm getting more used to the menus, and I guess after I've had a phone for awhile, I use it strictly as a phone. When I first get a phone, I'm all going through the menus to see what it can do. Did that make sense? I guess a little of the excitement has gone & I'm just mainly making calls on it. A funny thing happened the other day. I was at work, and I felt something in my pants. I was like "what is that?" My pockets started kind of stretching out. I pulled my phone out (after a lil' struggle), and much to my surprise, the phone was halfway open. I guess the auto-flip open button had activated while it was in my jeans pocket! It was a good laugh for the day.
Glad you are still enjoying the phone. I am still using all the function of the phone that I was using before except less playing with the menus. The functions I regulary use are Calls, Texting, Calendar, ToDo List, Calculator, Alarm Clock, Radio, E-Mail, Opera Mini. Keeping dreaming viewfly..... I had forgotten about the initial limit of 160, yes mine starts out at 913 and the starts on page 2 at 754, so yes that makes sense.
I have yet another dumb question, I tried to send ring tones by MMS, not protected ringtones. If I start the MMS first it will show only images available to attach, no sound files at all, and if I go into the gallery and try to MMS out from there it says "Unable to send selected files". Truthfully I am not sure if I have ever tried to MMS a sound file out, or if this has been discussed before. It is not important that I do so, but it is frustrating me to to no end that I cannot do it. Thanks for any help... PS: The size does not seem to make any difference or if it is an MP3 or MIDI. I have tried a MP3, 30 sec, 235 kB and also tried a MIDI, 0.01 sec, 0.1 kB MIDI (message tone). It also does not matter if it resides in the phone's memory or the Micro SD card.
