Just a tad bit of information from a Graphics Designer, images don't have to be "Large" to be immensely colorfull and of high resolution. I'm assuming you're using jpg/jpeg type photographs, that's the biggest step, as gif type images are limited to 256 colors. If you want I have a licensed copy of photochop, I can take a picture or two and change the compression schema (jpg settings) to decrease size so your phone doesn't suffer as much from the loading lag.
I beleive the phone is changing the 1Mb resolution photo to fit the external screen resolution every time you open the flip: This is the same situation when you try to send that photo via MMS, it scales it down to 640 x480 or 1/3Mpixel image. That computation is certainly consuming power and takes time, hanging up the rest of the phone. As nKrypteD1 says, there is no reason to have such a hi res image, since the external screen is not the same quality (pixel wise). So if you really want to use that image all the time, you may wish to scale it down. vf
WOW, viewfly it takes you 2 hours to have breakfast and shower..... I have the Manual option, one point to note is that in the manual mode it does not show the carriers names, all show up as "Cingular", i.e. the information is being read off the SIM card and not the towers. From my home it shows Cingular & Cingular, when I choose one Cingular it says "access not allowed", the other says "home network chosen". In my case they are T-Mobile & Cngular. The concept of choosing manual is good but it almost a minute to search for networks and depending on how often you have to change it, it could be more detrimental to the battery. Just my 2 cents.... Sounds fantastic, how about a screen shot viewfly? nKrypteD1Thanks, very good information. wildrockThanks Jim, very useful information.
One thing I forgot to mention is that when I was in Calcutta, I noticed I could manually choose Airtel, Hutch or Indi 83 (when available), and then switch to automatic and it would remain on the network I manually chose. In that case it almost seems that it was not searching for a network until there was no signal, since I would often choose HUTCH because it was easier to access the web than Airtel, while Airtel had the stronger signal, and when I put it back on Automatic the phone wouls stay on HUTCH. Just another 2 cents.....
Thanks for all the info. guys. You guys are great! I've never taken the time to learn the resolution/pixel stuff. When you say 'scale it down,' about what number should I scale it down to? I have a pretty good image editing program that might do that. Thanks.
You are very welcome, It is fun talking and discussing this. As for the size, the preinstalled wallpapers all seem to be 240 X 320, so I would say that should be an optimum size for other pictures also. viewfly, I just realized you posted that you don't have the Manual/Automatic option, this is surprising, why do you think the UK version does not have this option?
Thank you, Charlyee. I think I'm going to get a usb bluetooth adapter tonight, and I'll try bluetoothing the resized pics. I'm getting tired of buying different data cables for all these phones, so hopefully the usb bluetooth thing will work out okay. Update: I resized the pic, put it on my mom's phone via data cable, and then bluetoothed it over to my 6131, and it worked!! The pic looks GREAT, and the lag is gone. You guys are awesome!! I'm so glad I found this forum. I also made a quick call to my fiance on the highway going about 65. She was in a rush (had family coming over), but said it sounded good. She couldn't hear much background noise. I'm enjoying the phone more every day, especially right now with these nice digital cam. pics on both of the phone's (incredible) displays. Thanks again guys.
LOL, but Charlyee it takes awhile to chase the hen around the yard, and then wait for her to give up the egg. By then one would think the coffee beans would be finished roasting, but no, they never are. And then I sigh and gather up the stool and head over to the cow...never too pleased to see me. Meanwhile the shower water is heating up on the stove, and two pair of hungry eyes from the dogs say 'where is ours!' I think 2 hours is pretty good! Here the best handheld shot I could get of the screen. I picked the red screen font, and the wallpaper foto was taken with the 6131. Of course it looks really crisp 'in person', the black is pitch black and the white pure in the photo. I like the way the various icons show up better. You'll have to click on the thumbnail below to see it better. The orange glow is from the room lights. I'm figuring that the mostly black photo might some some battery power too. Maverick22, that is one thing I like about the 6131: how beautiful the display makes the photos appear. Charlyee, no clue why I don't have it(manual select). I guess I really don't mind since I really don't seem to need it where I live: this is solid Cingular country. Cingular stop advertising in the local papers here for months now.
So I put some mp3 ringtones on my 6131, and they start off low and increase in volume. I can't remember if I saw it on here or on hofo., but is there a way to fix this? I'll have to do some searching I guess. I just hope there's a fix to this because I won't be able to even hear my phone ring.
viewfly, That is a hilarious explaination of your two hours, thanks for the good laugh. The wall paper is gorgeous and I can certainly visualize how crisp it looks on the 6131. I don't have a need for the manual selection anymore but I did use it everyday before the intergration. I chose Cingular Blue from home which had 25% better signal than if I left it on Auto which would choose Orange. Now it seems I do get a stronger signal from home also. Interestingly for being the little one horse town I live in, this is also solid Cingular territory. PS: My wallpaper is what you show on your avatar together with the Nokia theme. PPS: I just charged my phone and I will track my calls and data for you for this cycle so you can have some more data to play around with....
I don't remember reading about this anywhere and I don't have the problem either. All my ringtones are MP3s. I am pretty sure that the ascending ringing that has been mention on HoFo is the ringing that you hear when you call someone, and yes mine does that.
Here's the HoFo link: http://207.210.82.132/showthread.php?t=1006165&highlight=ascending+ringtone+6131 This is kinda annoying. I guess I'll just have to use other ringtones.
Oops I was wrong then, sorry about that.:O I don't have this problem and I agree it is kind of annoying although you are not going to really miss your phone ringing it is just going to get louder with each ring right?
I caught one sentence in the manual: Setting the ringing volume to the highest level, will cause the ringing tone to reach it's highest level only after a few seconds. I moved the volume down a notch (and used a mp3 file), and that worked fine: sounded the same as the mp3 file. However, most of my mp3 songs start off low anyhow, and in general, the loudest of my files is not as loud as the supplied ring tones. The music ringtones that I've download off of the Cingular web site are very loud however. Maybe the initial ripping of the mp3 file or editing it could correct the initial loudness, and then set the phone ring volume one notch down from most loud to fix this problem. My ringtones are normally set at level 3. So the problem of the ascending volume seems to be fixed by not setting the ringtone to maximum. BTW, when it is set to max, it appears to start low (maybe level 3 or 4), but after 3 seconds it gets really loud, vf
Thank you VERY much, viewfly. I'm pretty positive mine started off low even at the next to highest volume level (because that was how I had the setting at the time). I'll try it again though. Thank you.
Glad that you like the story . Of course, my meaning was that the quick charge is only 2+ hours if the battery is dead...most times I get away with a only 1/2 - 3/4 hour in the morning. More data is always good. I really like this phone and it will be keeper for a while. I do miss the ease that I could replace the snap on covers with the 6230, so I'm treating the new phone very carefully. If it does get damaged, the front and back can be replaced, but with a little more effort.
I have 53.073 mins of talk time, 37 text messages, 1 mms, 3 calendar alarms, 6 one step calculations, 2 syncs via BT, and the power consumed by deleting 37 messages. The battery just went down the first notch. From my prior experience it is the text messages and 37 in one day is a pretty high no. even for me. That number is split pretty equally between incoming & outgoing. Yes, I definitely like this phone and plan on keeping it for a while. I too wish the covers were that easy to change but like you said it still could be done in a pinch. OT, I was at the Cingular store and was playing with the 3125 and it felt flimsy, the screen looked dull, and the text messaging screen uninteresting etc. etc. etc. I don't mean to offend anyone but it would be hard for us to find another phone after being spoilt by the 6131.
That seems pretty good for battery life, certainly liveable for a typical user. Yes, it would be hard to go backwards in terms of the screen. Vf
I just bought a 1gig memory card. I put a few songs on it using an sd adapter and my pc memory card reader. However, I don't think the phone is detecting/recognizing it. Can anyone please help? Thanks in advance.
At the risk of sounding like a Smart Aleck, I am going to ask if you put the Micro SD card in the right way. When you say your phone is not recognizing it , exactly what do you mean? If you use PC suite to look at the phone does the memory card show up at all?
Well, I didn't think I'd have to do this, but I turned the phone off & on again & it recognized it! Is there a way to select destination folders? With this 1G card, I'm gonna want images & stuff to be saved on the card. Say for example, I take a pic with the phone. It automatically saves it in the gallery, right? Is there a way to save it on the memory card? Thanks.
Yes, that's how mine is set up. Go into the Media/Camera/Options/Image & Video Storage (9th. option down)and then choose "Memory Card". There are all kinds of options in that menu that may be you want to look at or change also.
Day 2: Battery went down 2nd. notch. Cummulative Total: 72.633 mins of talk time 44 text messages 2 mms 5 calendar alarms 11 one step calculations 4 syncs via BT, Deletd 42 messages Some playing with Menus. By no means is the battery meter linear. Also, I have my phone turned off for 7-8 hours every night. You are welcome, glad to help.
I found that the first time I created a folder on my SD card and saved music into it (using a card reader like you), that the phone didn't find it automatically. I had to navigate to it once. After that, the phone looked in the right place. It could have been that turning off the phone, then turning it back on forced it to scan the card and find it. As Charlyee said, you can set up folders and then use your options to save your files where you want. It isn't always intuitive or obvious for me with the 6131 to know where I'll find another option menu to twiddle with some settings, though. For instance, if you open the Music Player, select Options, and then select Track List, you are presented with a list of your songs sorted according to your current track list (or just "All Tracks" if you don't have a track list). Then if you hit Options again, you are presented with three options, 1) Send; 2) refresh track list; 3) Change track list. I use the third function to pick what track list I want to control which songs I want to listen to, and in what order (like by cd or theme). It's definitely a buried setting, but one I find useful. If you are at all familiar with making/using track lists, you'll love this (uses standard .m3u track lists that you see all over the p2p sites). Its analog in iTunes would be making a playlist. I have a handy track list editor in PhoneDirector that allows me to drag and drop songs from my Gallery into a tracklist, and then upload it to the phone. The interesting thing about this is that the track lists are stored in a hidden partition in the phone memory, not on the SD card. So the path to picking a track list becomes: Music Player->Options->Track list->Options->Change track list->[pick track list, or "All Tracks"] A bit longer and more cumbersome than most on this phone. Another odd point is that the Music Player shows your tracks, if you are using the "All Tracks" option, in alphabetical order according to the file name, not the song name. This can be very confusing if they are not the same. The song name comes off of the mp3 tag, which you can edit in a program like iTunes. Jim
Wow, thanks Jim. I'm gonna have to save this reply & look at it better once I have time to mess with the music more.
